David H. Out!

By Andrew Belonsky March 13, 2008 at 9:03am · 18 comments

David Hernandez got the boot on last night’s American Idol. Did his gay stripper past cost him the show or was it his shitty singing? [Newsday]

I’m going with shitty singing. (okay…granted, no one in the top 12 is really that bad. But among them he’s probably one of the least remarkable.)

He normally had a good voice, but his version of “I Saw Her Standing There” was so horrendous that I’m surprised Yoko Ono didn’t come up out of the audience and kick him in the nuts.

  • Alexa

Obviously you haven’t heard Yoko sing.

I’m sorry he’s gone, but it’s tough, so many good singers that one sub-par performance can sink you (unless you’re a teenage Mormon). And I’m sure he lost votes because of his past as well. My ex-boss refused to let his kids vote for Clay when he was on simply because he LOOKED gay.

OK it was the singing it was BAD hopefully he is a better stripper

Cute guy who has just an okay voice. I don’t think the stripper thing was a plus. Wish David much luck in his TV journalist pursuits. I assume he’s going back to ASU and get his degree (and maybe do a few dance gigs).

I knew it was going to be either him or Kristy Lee Cook – both of them were horrendous.

Poor little David Archuleta screwed up too but he is going to get the teen girl vote anyway. Nice to see that he isn’t infallible, though I love his voice.

That version of 8 days a weeks was awful. Way worse than his song. I was honestly surprised he was in the bottom 3. I thought that hippie from tx should have been there.

Obviously David Archuleta had a bad night, but his cuteness is so endearing, how can you not vote for him?

On a slightly unrelated note, I went to the same HS that David A. attends now. And I know David H. from his days as a bartender (not the stripper).

I took some time off from plotting the downfall of civilizations to watch the show for the first time this season and I have to say that it was definitely his singing that did him in. The pre-interview didn’t help either.

David H. deserved to go. His performance, especially what he was trying to pass off as dancing, was horrendous. The dancing was so bad I couldn’t imagine him making much money in a gay bar doing lap dances with the lack of rhythm he displayed.

Personally if I was David I would have hired an agent first thing this morning and tried to swing a deal for a nude layout in Playgirl. He could probably pull down a quarter to half a million for that – and we all know pulling down his pants is not a problem. Don’t know if he’s endowed but he could probably do half-decent in porn as well.

    Bull. Sh*t.

It was so convenient that he gets ousted before they had to put him on the tour (Top 10) for fear of how “middle American” concert-goers might react + how his presence might affect ticket sales.

He was, hands-down, one of the best singers in the running this year + he had a slightly off night. So did David A., but his fans still forgave him that + supported him b/c he’s talented. I think David H.’s fans probably did the same. I’m not buying the nonsense idea that he was “unremarkable”, let alone “shitty”.

    March 13, 2008 at 2:03pm
  • Alexa

Good point, fredo777. He had one bad week, before that he was one of the best each week. No way he should have gone before Christy or Syesha but they won’t turn off the soccer moms and their brats going to the tour.

    March 13, 2008 at 3:03pm
  • fredo777

    Exactly, Alexa.

Likewise with Danny N. I know he didn’t pick the best songs for his voice, but do we really think that even if he had blown them away each week, Idol would have let him last long enough for the tour?

I’d like to say they would, but I seriously doubt that.

OR, perhaps it was his REJECTION of his gay stripper life that did him in. His song choice caused him to seem so inauthentic, and even pathetic. As much as I dislike Simon, I agree that David seemed DESPERATE. The idea that he is a 25 year old man, horny for a 17 year old girl, was laughable. And, it’s kind of an icky song, really. In most States, 17 is UNDERAGE. And he sang it in a frantic way. How could he indentify with that song? HE COULDN’T.

We all KNOW David was a lap-dancing stripper in a gay club, and a bartender in a gay bar. It’s not a secret that he can tip toe past. What is his plan? To say he is really straight and took those jobs for the money, but he felt yulky and disgusted the whole time? He angered me with his song choice, so I did not vote for him. Maybe others felt the same.

He should have come onstage, and sang as a gay man. OR, at least sung a song that was gender ambiguous, in which the pronoun YOU was used, instead of he or SHE. His voice is GRAND. I hear touches of Roy Orbinson in it. GREAT range. Clean and clear. He just lost his gay balls. Hope he gets them back. OR, do we have another Clay Gayken in our future? YAWN!

Well BB, I just read that the 12 contestants got to choose from only 24 songs, and his first 2 choices were given to other people, and that song was pretty much all that was left. Anyway, I don’t recall any Beatles songs about gay strippers, do you? Unless you misheard the title of Day Tripper.

Congratulations, you were just played by the homophobic Idol machine. Happy?

    March 13, 2008 at 7:03pm
  • Gayvid Hernandez?

Say it isn’t soooo…noooo.. David..don’t be a Gayvid and just come out so you’ll go by David. Don’t do a Clay Gayken.

…but if Clay Gayken has “Claymates”….what would Gayvid Hernandez have? “Hernanfriends”?

    March 13, 2008 at 8:03pm
  • Dale

Pardon me, all, but it seemed clear to me that David was clinically depressed. His energy level was suddenly flagging, he couldn’t even pretend to smile and be happy. Whatever pressures are on him that we don’t know about really got to him. He was just going through the motions. It was really clear at the end when they showed him earlier in the season and he was sparkling and charismatic and confident. Wonder what it was that happened!

    March 13, 2008 at 10:03pm
  • BB

Alexa, I’m confused. You say they (12 people) got to choose from 24 songs, and I SAW HER STANDING THERE, was just about all that was left. What happened to the other 12 songs? Someone eat them? AND, he could have changed the words to suit a gay man, and sang, I saw HIM standing there. Or, I saw YOU standing there, to at least be gender ambiguous.

AND, in seasons past, some have sung the same song, if more than one wanted to sing the same song. AND, I was saying how I FELT. So I have NO idea what you are talking about, concerning the homophobic Idol machine. I AM gay, and I know that A.I. is as homophobic as hell. I’ve written angry letters about that, several times already, to Fox. To NO avail. The awful homophobic bantering between Simon and Ryan drives me batty. And when Simon told one male performer recently that his performance was “girlie” I became angry and wrote another letter about that.

I don’t watch that HORRID show, unless someone is on I am cheering for. I was cheering for David Hernandez. He let me down. SO, I will not be watching the rest of this season. When Hernandez came onstage and sang, SHE was just 17, I felt SO disappointed. ALL who watch A.I. now KNOW he was a gay stripper. SO, be Rufus Wainwright, K.D. Lang, Melissa Ethridge, Elton John, Scissors Sisters Jake Shears GAY. Go unapologetically WITH it! Instead, he went AGAINST it, and that made me angry. And I have the right to MY feelings.

You all missed it. It wasn’t the singing or the rumors. It was the eyebrow. I couldn’t stop staring at the cheesy eyebrow movements.

Clearly it’s his patented stripper move guaranteed to get extra tips, but on TV is was just frightening. It looked like one of those tragic porns that try to have acting.

I wish him all the best… but he’s got to stop working the eyebrow if he wants to have any sort of career in music.
