Derrick Martin + Richard Goodman, Georgia’s Gay Prom Kings

Everybody together now: A collective awwww at seeing Georgia’s Derrick Martin and boyfriend Richard Goodman, both 18, walking hand-in-hand into their high school prom together on Saturday night. Nobody even hissed at them! And even the Westboro Baptist Church was nowhere to be found! And if things went as smoothly as we think they did, maybe Derrick and antagonist classmate Amber Duskin even shared a danced together.

His boyfriend looks uncomfortable. But I am happy for both of them that they get to have their prom as they are.

@D’OH etc: With all the attention I think anyone would be a little uncomfortable walking the redneck carpet. . .Pensive might be a better term.

That said, I hope they did had some fun & didn’t spend the whole evenining under a microscope. These kids deserve our wholehearted support but also some privacy.

@Jon (still the other): Agree about the privacy. I understand the political reasons for showing it, but also personal reasons to share in a moment that’s not going to happen again.

@Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com: Bravo indeed! A handsome couple. . .perhaps we could step back and support both of these young people by respecting their privacy. . .I think scholarship support for both Martin and Goodman is in order.

The look on his boyfriends face makes me hope they sought counseling before they did this. The paparazzi can be vicious when out of earshot of a video camera.

Back in the day during the trial of Leona Helmsley photographers were screaming “Over hear bitch” and as you can guess Leona frowned up or glared the first few days of the trial until she realized (or no longer cared) what they were up to and were succeeding.

I could see some idiot spreading the word of God in the same way as those NY photographers only without the profanity (or so I hope).

      How times have changed.

These two kids have more guts than rich, pampered celebrities who work and live in a protected bubble such as Anderson Cooper, Matt Bomer and so many other celebrities and politicians. Bravo for them! And they’re hot too!

I do hope his parents realize that there son is an exceptional person with tremendous courage and character. If they don’t reconcile with him, they will lose a good son.
