For many, the television landscape has felt like a bland, barren wasteland since the demise of the long-running sitcom Designing Women (1986-93) and its acerbic leading lady Julia Sugarbaker (unforgettably played by the late Dixie Carter), but here’s some great news: sheee’s back! Sort of. Series creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, who is obviously as fed up with Donald Trump‘s blowhard b.s. as the rest of us, has written one of Julia’s trademark scorching monologues that cuts to the heart of the issue, here it’s Trump’s misogyny. With the aid of Topher Payne, who portrays Sugarbaker in the stage production Designing Women Live, Julia is back in business.
Watch her scorch the earth with Trump below.

Thanks for showing us some love! Also, this screencap will haunt my dreams.

Making fun of Carly Fiorina’s bird face isn’t misogyny. Trump didn’t refer to all women as pigs, dogs or slobs either. He directed his comments at individuals, not the entire female population. I’m not even a Trump supporter, but he is right about media twisting his words to create outrage.
The Tower of Power
@Masc Pride: It is misogyny. Why single out women for attacks on their appearance, but not men?
Last I knew, it was ability, not looks, that mattered in public service.
Not only are his remarks superficial, they are degrading and unnecessary.
There is a disturbing trend in the USA of attacking people’s looks and character instead of defeating their ideas with better ideas. It’s un-American.
redheaded stepchild
The idea that Donald Trump would think he’s in a position to criticize anyone’s appearance is kinda preposterous.
As Julia says, he needs to do better. He needs to talk better, he needs to act better.

@The Tower of Power: Totally agree with you. Racis+, homophobic, and sexist people always seek to reduce people to a trait that has nothing to do with the conversation, because they can’t intellectually compete with the person that they are attacking. Nevermind about blk people’s rights, because they are all animals. Who cares about gay rights, they are all going to hell. Who cares about women rights, I bet she can’t satisfy her husband. Why have a honest conversation, when you can just say the sh/t your followers are afraid to say to someone’s face and win votes?

Is that John Travolta haha

lacks the punch that julia had
OzJosh
I know a lot of gay guys are still in total denial about the political incorrectness of drag, but the concept of a guy in drag – and therefore a guy parodying women – calling Trump on his politically incorrect attitude to women, is both twisted and inappropriate.
The Tower of Power
@OzJosh: If a guy enjoys cross dressing and identifies as a woman in some aspect, how is that a parody of women? If anything, drag is a celebration of the performer’s feminine side.

No character on television in the 80s and 90s could dress someone down like Julia Sugarbaker so it’s difficult to imagine another person attempting to fill those shoes but I believe this might have had more impact if a woman had done the monologue. Part of the reason the Julia Sugerbaker character was so well liked wasn’t just the writing but also the delivery by Dixie Carter. It seems lacking here…
Tracy Pope
@The Tower of Power: I absolutely agree though I do believe the actor’s portrayal here didn’t do the character justice.

Dixie and her husband were conservative Republicans in real life.
Alan David Smith
desidning women was one of my favorite sitcom’s. julia would come in snap her wrap off. and we knew that we were gonna get a perspective about anything. from piece work to pornography. the show dealt with aids, domestic violance, wearing of fur, the death of dixie carter was 1 of the few times i cried over a celebrity.

Quite possibly the best video I’ve seen in months! Ms. Sugarbaker should run for President of the USA! “StRUMPet” is exactly what the name implies!
o.codone
Donald is teflon. say whatever you want, even bring back some bizarre drag queen character from 30 years ago to give it some (perceived) punch, and guess what? Even gays are voting for Trump this time. Shhhh, you can’t say that out loud.
joeyty
@uktnla: I forgot that about Dixie Carter being conservative and Republican. I remember that surprised a lot of people.
Harlan Snyder
Not even close to Dixie Carter. Stop trying.
Roan
Cute, but this draq queen isn’t even close to Dixie Carter’s Julia Sugarbaker.
Brian Mcdonald
You go Topher ! Miss ya, been a long time since those Outwrite days! Mwah!
Tony Johnston
This impersonation is rather bland considering Ms. Sugarbaker had some very distinct characteristics to play on. Topher clearly hasn’t done his research.
jimmy_tx
All of Julia Sugarbaker’s many wonderful takedowns were courtesy of Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a huge Clinton supporter. Considering Dixie Carters own politics, she likely would have been a Trump supporter.

“Dixie and her husband were conservative Republicans in real life.”
Also, whenever she had to give a speech she disagreed with, a episode to two later Julia would get to sing. It’s was their bribe to get Dixie to do lines she didn’t believe in.
Periwinkle
@Tracy Pope: probably as Dixie was a conservative… easier to give into a role so removed from her own character.
