Desmond Tutu Says He’d Pick Hell Over A Homophobic Heaven

“I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this. I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven. No, I would say sorry, I mean I would much rather go to the other place.”

— South African Bishop and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Desmond Tutu, on where he would prefer to spend eternity, as reported by Washington Times. (Given the type of folks who would likely populate a homophobic heaven, he would be making the right choice.)

      I was very fortunate to shake this man’s hand when he came to Duke when I was an undergrad. He is a class act through and through. Such a beautiful spirit.

      God bless Archbishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela. Both are proof that everyone in Africa is not anti-gay.

      Thank you, Archbishop, there aren’t nearly enough of you!

      (And I’m pleasantly surprised that, at least as of comment #9, this thread hasn’t attracted anyone claiming that all Christians are anti-gay.)

      Bishop Tutu is a true man of God; not like so many Catholic clergy and church officials.

      @hephaestion: Ditto!

      It’s funny how many Christians are always on the prowl for my converts. I think if they actually behaved like decent people like Archbishop Tutu, they’d get a lot more people to join the flock.

      Alas, as a Cradle Catholic, you won’t find many (if any) high-ranking officials in the Catholic Church like Archbishop Tutu.
