Did Utah’s Republicans Just Pick a Homo to Compete for Salt Lake City’s Senate Seat?

Meet the Utah GOP’s pick to secure the state senate seat that represents Salt Lake City: Melvin Nimer, owner of a tax consultancy the openly gay president of the Utah Log Cabin Republicans, who’s jumping in the race after party officials had to do away with Nancie Lee Davis, who failed to file financial disclosure forms in time.

Nimer faces off against incumbent Sen. Ben McAdams, “who is considered a straight ally of the LGBT community,” and has the endorsement of Equality Utah thanks to his work with Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker to pass anti-discrimination ordinates. Funny story: They’ll both be competing to sit in the seat once held by Sen. Scott McCoy, a gay dude.
