Doctor Who may have set a TV record with the fastest “Bury Your Gays” moment ever.
Fans of the hit BBC sci-fi show were thrilled when a new gay character was introduced in its New Year’s Day special “Resolution.”
But the excitement didn’t last long. Because less than half a minute later, the character had his lifeless body dragged down an empty hallway.
Actor Connor Calland made his TV debut playing a gay security guard named Richard. In his
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
When asked who can open a fingerprint-controlled door, Richard responds: “Today, just me. Most secure digits in Yorkshire. That’s what I tell my boyfriend, anyway. I probably shouldn’t be telling you that, I’m new at this.”
And that’s when he gets killed.
Naturally, fans aren’t pleased with Doctor Who murdering yet another LGBTQ character.
Here’s what they’ve been saying on Twitter…
How long did it take to kill off the token gay character?

As much as I enjoyed the #DoctorWho special, I hate that this is the third time this season it's used the Bury Your Gays trope, which also happens to be the amount of gay characters introduced this season! Stop it!

Murdered a gay guy within 10 seconds of his introduction. Is that a #buryyourgays record? #DoctorWho

Starting 2019 off with the Bury Your Gays trope is not how I wanted this year to start, thanks #DoctorWho

Not unlike another very popular new film on Netflix that rhymes with [[SPOILER ALERT]] herd stocks.
skeldare
Not like there weren’t straight characters introduced and then killed off in the episode.
DarkZephyr
But those weren’t the ONLY straight characters on the show at the time now, were they?
nitejonboy
” Herd Stocks ” killed indiscriminately FYI, it pretty much killed off everyone, you can’t call it homophobic.
jjose712
They had three gay characters recently, all were killed, so of course you can call them homophobic.
Spartacus killed its two gay characters in the first season (and a lot of straight ones) but they had new ones, and two of them even made it to the last episode.
Prove to add three black or asian characters, the only ones in the show, to kill them unceremoniously and you’ll see what reaction you get
Kangol
One of the first characters in that house that it killed off was the Asian American gay man, not long after introducing him, or did you miss that? I knew he wasn’t long for that world. Or the black people, or the heavy-set white woman, or the older white woman and the right-wing man, etc.

This is so stupid and ill informed, Dr Who has a very good history of queer MAJOR characters. This particular role was one of many tiny supporting characters in the episode, who happened to be killed… and not because he was gay. The show’s history is actually good: Captain Jack Harkness (pansexual) who even got his own show in “Torchwood” and a major same sex love story with Ianto, Bill Potts (lesbian) who was one of the Dr’s companions and was a lesbian of colour, Madame Vastra and Jenny (lesbian cross-species couple) who starred in an episode, Clara (bisexual) one of the Dr’s companions who low key mentioned liking girls and boys, and River Song (omnisexual) a regular recurring character who would just about shag anything.

Under RTD and Moffatt, not Chibnall.

Who remembers Dr Jack Harkness, the recurring Dr Who character. He was so good, he also received his own show, TOURCHWOOD!!
Daggerman
…this seems odd. They turned Dr. Who into a woman which tells intelligent people that gender has nothing to do with the human’s efficiency. So how can they be such clumsy idiots and do this?? Someone ought to realize that GAY characters have to be portrayed as positive human beings. This is NOT sending out the correct message.
