Last night’s must-see moment at the Golden Globes had to be Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech upon receiving the Cecille B DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.

The actress used the time to call out Donald Trump‘s impersonation of disabled reported Serge Kovaleski, who suffers a congenital joint condition:

Since the speech aired, the world’s been waiting with bated breath for Trump’s reaction — which finally arrived at 6:27 a.m. in a rambling series of Tweets that are as ludicrous as you’ve come to expect:
How about we take this to the next level?

While Streep’s speech was largely celebrated and widely shared after airing Sunday night, there were still a handful of detractors like Meghan McCain and Laura Ingraham:
This Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won. And if people in Hollywood don't start recognizing why and how – you will help him get re-elected

Actress Meryl Streep uses her Lifetime Achievement Award speech to bash @realDonaldTrump. How imaginative! How creative!Yawn.

You got to love watching leftist Hollywood actors who don't live in reality lecture us on politics. #GoldenGlobes #MerylStreep

Disappointed #MerylStreep turned her #lifetimeachievementaward into anti#Trump speech. Bad taste and disrespectful. Get over it Hollywood.

Meanwhile, Twitter lit up with hundreds of people praising Streep’s speech:
"When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose" thank you #MerylStreep #GoldenGlobes

An historic first for the black gay community (Moonlight) but this shit gets priority? I don’t say shame TOTALLY on you queerty, I say this time shame on the black gay readers of this online tabloid for not bringing this to your attention. This was no oversight and all of your black readers know it but are going to sit there and take it.

It is beneficial to our country to have so many different perspectives. The odds of accuracy increases when masses collectively estimate solutions. A heightened sense of survival, our nation of immigrants, engenders gifts that otherwise may have stayed dormant, creating a society that expects. The damage done to the GOP could not be more comprehensive, far more than any American citizen insisting on equality could ever do. One has only one reputation. The Republicans have ruined theirs. This U.S.A. experiment worked. We solve problems. We are free to problem solve, and this cannot be contained. It is what scares Mr. Putin. A dark passenger, recognized easily in a nation such as ours, has us laughing at foibles while calculating the risk. We, with many perspectives, ace it. This is why I love the United States of America. We solve problems with our voices.

Trump always seems to want to rewrite history but we have the original to review. No tantrum he can create in his quest for revisionist history is going to let him weasel out of this one.
As for Meagan McCain, she seems to be trying to cajole Californians and New Yorkers into not criticizing Trump lest it anger… who? The “real Americans” who live in this “reality” we are always hearing about? If the States in the middle of this country can’t find it within themselves to try to understand the plight of women seeking affordable health care or Black Lives Matter why should I care what their needs are as they continue to vote for politicians who will reduce their wages and take away their sponsored healthcare?

@Bob LaBlah: Moonlight was a small budget release while this story is in all the online news.

@ChrisK: “Moonlight was a small budget release while this story is in all the online news.”
Now, be nice and share with us your opinion as to the article they DID post about Moonlight and it being a rewrite from last November and whether or not that looks for of a middle finger aimed at the black readers. Don’t be timid about out. Let us know just what you think of THAT over sight as well.

I thought she was superb last night and she is easily one of the greatest actress in US or global film history. Speak, Meryl!
Congrats to all the winners, esp. Moonlight, a great film; Atlanta, a brilliant TV show; and Isabelle Huppert, another extraordinary actress! BTW, *La La Land* kind of sucks, though.
Kangol
@Bob LaBlah: That was wack. I kept reclicking to see if there was a problem. Just the usual sloppiness from Queerty. You’ll get 2-3 negative articles about Black ppl/POCs on here for every decent one (and it might be recycled, like the *Moonlight* one!).
Kieran
It takes a lot of courage to bash Donald Trump at a Hollywood awards ceremony.
darwinbell
@Bob LaBlah: Am i missing something, there is coverage for Moonlight’s win on Queerty and why it should win the Oscar.
Bob LaBlah
@darwinbell: In the comment section doesn’t/didn’t it strike you as odd they are all dated from LAST year as does the articles content itself? Thank you so much for backing up my theory regarding the intellect of the majority of Queerty readers and why this blog continues its fourth grade reporting. How lazy can one be I wonder on both sides of the screen.

“Meghan McCain”?
Is she the daughter of President John McCain?

Queerty is merely a watering hole. It never was much for journalism, but the commenters are amusing. It is in response to others that thoughts articulate. Judge Walker, Prop H8, Romney, and others were hashed out fairly meticulously. Advantageous to us, were Queerty to move towards more political news. It is a strange time. In the late 60’s, some magazines went through transitions that found it difficult to be racy-newsy; incongruous intent. Saga magazine, if I remember correctly, was one. If it is dangerous to withhold valuable information from the community, then this should be determinative, for at least fifty percent of Queerty’s content could be strengthening everybody, not dividing. Fishy clickbait chumming the waters.
bobbyjoe
Sure, yeah, Meghan McCain, Meryl Streep’s speech is exactly why Trump won.
Are we all sick yet of everything being “why Trump won” according to shameless, worthless concern trolls like Meghan McCain? Whatever they don’t like is suddenly the reason Trump won. They’ve seriously gotten to the point where I expect them to not like something they’ve ordered in a restaurant and be like “waiter, this soup is awful. It’s exactly why Donald Trump won the election.”
OzJosh
Long after Trump’s supporters realise what fools they’ve been and sink into an embarrassed silence, Streep’s speech will be remembered as a landmark call to resistance – up there with Lillian Hellman’s HUAC speech about not cutting her conscience to this year’s fashions. She deserves the utmost respect for using her few minutes of airtime to say something important – and with a coherence, dignity and compassion that Trump has yet to even vaguely suggest he might be capable of.

Back in 1982 I went to LACC in Los Angeles. I remember one September morning in particular when a professor overheard me telling another student that I saw no need to take that class (Anthropology). The professor responded with “one day you will find yourself in a situation where you won’t be able to bowl them over with brilliance so it is here where you will learn to baffle them with B/S”. The entire class roared. Your comment really took me back to that day.
And no, I am not laughing this time as I did back then.

@Bob LaBlah: I don’t want to offend, but I watched the Golden Globes, then went back to see the Moonlight acceptance speech online. It’s a film I’ve read a lot about, and the HIV connection, but the director never said anything about gay or HIV in his speech. The way the film is being honored with critic’s awards, maybe he will be able to include some openly gay remarks at the Oscars.
To demean Streep’s speech, which was an eloquent plea for acceptance and tolerance and against bullying, because Queerty didn’t run a story on Moonlight (an obvious error) was not cool. No one watching the Globes would have even known that Moonlight was a gay film from the clips or the speech, unless they had seen the film or read about it.
Bob LaBlah
@jimontp: “No one watching the Globes would have even known that Moonlight was a gay film from the clips or the speech, unless they had seen the film or read about it.”
But YOU and the readers of Queerty knew it, didn’t we? You say you didnt mean to offend and there is where I will leave it. Thanks for your comment and I say the lack of commentary from those who have no problem calling for my head on the chop block because I commented last year on a well know black gay porn star (favorably, mind you) but offer deafening silence on this slight says a lot more about them and their mentality than mine. I never ask myself twice what the priorities of the black readers of this site are because I doubt they know themselves though I would not rule out See, Hear…………..never mind.

Oh yeah, we are really scared of Meryl and her tinsel town gang….lol…lol
She was almost in tears claiming Hollywood, the press and the liberals are under attack.
Watching the sadness on their faces was just pure joy.
mhoffman953
This was a terrible speech filled with elitism and smugness. Streep acted as if rich Hollywood actors and actresses are the victims at the start of her speech by claiming they are somehow victims because they are vilified. Getting paid millions of dollars and living in posh mansions is the opposite of someone who should be playing the victim card.
She then proceeds to act as if Trump is against all foreigners by citing the homelands of various actresses and saying if we banned foreigners then we wouldn’t have films. Trump has never said anything about legal foreign Americans. His policies have centered around illegal immigrants who have broken the law.
Then she cited how we should not disparage others but she proceeds to disparage sports, fans of sports, and claims martial arts are not arts – I think Bruce Lee and many from Asian countries would highly disagree with her elitist point of view.
Afterward she claims all people should be held accountable for their actions, but she’s the same woman who gave child rapist, Roman Polanski, a standing ovation at an award ceremony in 2003.
The more appropriate and less smug way of addressing these issues would be to say that she doesn’t agree with the election outcome but that’s what sometimes happens in elections and that all of us should come together regardless of religion, race, gender, political views, or sexual orientation to make sure that America can strengthen through and support each other as well as our incoming President while also making sure all future decisions are done in a way which benefits all Americans then thank the public for supporting her career which led to this lifetime achievement award.

Beautifully eloquently and passionately stated bravo to you Miss Streep bravo!
The fact that so many on the right are dismissing this as liberal propaganda speaks for itself as to their consistently tiring lacks of empathy for their fellow Americans in this country.
It is so embarrassing and shameful and Im very glad I was raised with a more compassionate empathetic and caring heart prejudice will NEVER be in my vocabulary I refuse to ever embrace that inclusivity multiculturalism and unity however I will always embrace those.

If by “historic speech” you mean arrogantly taking advantage of an opportunity to push a political agenda, rather than simply thanking the HFP for recognizing her talent, then yes, Mary Louise Streep is the single greatest thing bestowed upon humanity.
1EqualityUSA
“Arrogantly taking advantage of an opportunity to push a political agenda.” Is there anyone more arrogant than Mr. Trump? This is not a time to lie down and play dead. We will push back.
Hussain-TheCanadian
@Mo Bro: Not to burst your bubble but what the f*uck do you think Donald Trump is? A serious business man? The man was, and still is, an entertainer. So to tell us that actors are not allowed to share their political opinions while the current American President was a host of a TV show kind of puts a hole in your moral outrage.

Trumpa Dumpa has proved NADA and is still unfit to be POTUS until he actually does something good for this country and I do not mean his fake job support for Mike Pence.

If Me. Streep is so concerned about mistreating disabled people, why did she not condemn the racist blacks that tortured that disabled white guy on Facebook?
They didn’t call it a hate crime of course despite all the racist things they were saying because it not hate when blacks do horrifying things to European Americans.
She cares little about the disabled. Only enough to use them as an excuse tutu attack the future Président off the United States because her precious Hillary lost.
She used a moment of celebration and turned it into something shirty Cry me a river Meryl poor liberal elitist didn’t get her way.
I would like to say the latest update of auto correct on Apple Swype sucks!

@Hussain-TheCanadian:
Donald Trump = For decades has single-handedly created jobs for millions of people the world over.
Meryl Streep = For decades has single-handedly read words other people have written for her.
Man, Hussain, that was just too easy.

Ms. Streep proved once again that she is the standard of class and talent. Never once did she even mention Valdemort’s name. But we all knew who she was talking about. Trumpy once again responded with his uniformed, butt hurt, cry-baby, attitude. If Ms. Streep is so overrated, then why respond at all? We have a fragile, egomaniacal, cry baby entering the White House, Ladies and Gentlemen. This will end badly for us!
