Drag Queen Panti Bliss Shares Thoughts on Ireland’s Gay Marriage Referendum

panti bliss irish marriage referrendum vote yesLGBT activist Rory O’Neill, better known as his drag queen persona Panti Bliss, recently joined Jarlath Regan on an episode of his podcast ‘An Irishman Abroad’ to discuss the upcoming May 22nd Gay Marriage Referendum in Ireland.

For those of you who are unaware, on May 22nd Ireland will hold a referendum to amend the Constitution of Ireland and permit same-sex marriage. According to IrishCentral, a 2014 opinion poll showed that 76 percent of Irish voters were in favor of a ‘Yes’ vote, which would allow for same-sex couples to get married.

In this podcast episode, Panti and Jarlath discuss how both sides of the vote might be feeling and how, whether the amendment passes or not, this change needs to be addressed by everyone.

In addition to the discussion about the referendum, the two discuss “the circumstances which led to [Panti’s] infamous Noble Call speech, how defending [her] views could have caused [her] bankruptcy, being diagnosed with HIV [and] growing up in an Ireland where homosexuality was illegal.” It’s truly a great listen, whether your Irish or not. Enjoy!
