Dustin Lance Black has wrapped his miniseries on gay rights, When We Rise, after years of work and tweeted out his accomplishment and excitement for a vacation in Florida with fiancé Olympian Tom Daley.
It's official. After 3.5 years #WhenWeRise is finally picture locked. Time to collapse in the fiancé's arms. #Florida here I come.
— Dustin Lance Black (@DLanceBlack) November 3, 2016
Production began back in March, but Black spent years researching, interviewing and writing for the series. Milk director Gus Van Sant will direct a couple episodes, and it will star Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Michael K. Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell and Rachel Griffiths. Black won an Oscar for his Milk screenplay, and also wrote J. Edgar and episodes of the TV show “Big Love.”
Black and Daley announced their engagement in 2015.

Ok, its official, I am officially nauseated. Isn’t there any other pertinent news in the world other than Dustin Black collapses into the arms of his lover Tom Daley??? If either one of these two had to get a real job, then they would have a good reason to collapse in exhaustion!!!!!seriously
Billy Budd
@glennr: Idiot. These guys excel in what they do and they work harder than everybody else. They are not like you who sits watching TV and drinking soda and snacks all day. You are a bitter jealous queen.
Eye of the Beholder
@Billy Budd: I laughed when Tom got last place at the Olympics. It’s still funny.
ChrisK
@Billy Budd: Please. I know it’s your fantasy of finding a teenager to pretend to love you but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Glenn’s point is valid. Going to a real job is exhaustive. No one covers that though. Just a bunch of primadonas that love to take selfies and that’s ok. Lets not kid ourselves about how exhaustive it is though. For someone so exhausted he sure spends allot of time on social media. On his twitter it’s every single day. That’s a luxury for most people.
Baba Booey Fafa Fooey
@Eye of the Beholder: Why would you laugh?
Billy Budd
@ChrisK: I am not looking for someone to love. I have already found him. And I find disturbing that you can consider an olympic medallist lazy. You know nothing about sports.
nathan_dostal
Ah, a Dad and his boy….cute in a weird sort of way!
nathan_dostal
@Billy Budd: -they arent working harder than everybody else. Thats dumb. Maybe AS hard but being treated like kings while working aint that bad!
Hussain-TheCanadian
Jesus folks, relax – The miniseries sounds great – We need more gay content, not just for us, but for many gay people who live in countries where they can’t express who they are.
So what if they are 20 years apart? Welcome to the human condition people.
bluberybandit
@Billy Budd: It’s obvious neither one of them understand what it’s like to take pride in what you do for a living.
Most individuals lack a sense of gratification or fulfillment in their personal lives, regardless of what it pertains to. It’s hard to get a disenchanted taste out of one’s mouth, but it’s easy for those around us to smell our breath and be turned off.
The first respondent said “pertinent news”….This blog relates to what’s being discussed, so it is, in fact, pertinent. It’s just not pertinent to him.
Billy Budd
@bluberybandit: Yes. Sometimes people are clueless and nasty in here. This couple is a beacon of excellence, success and hope for us. We should embrace them.
ChrisK
@Billy Budd: ..and prove to the rest of the world that stereotype that were nothing but a group of sexual predators of the young. Great idea!
Billy Budd
@ChrisK: Do you really REALLY think that DLB is a sexual predator? Straight couples with age differences are found everywhere. Wake up. You are living in another world.
lykeitiz
@Hussain-TheCanadian: Only on this site can there be an article about a gay rights miniseries and the only thing the queens flap on about is social media & selfies.
CaliKyle
@Billy Budd: You’ve said it best and took the words about the jealous, bitter queens right outta my mouth.
ChrisK
@lykeitiz: Oh no you didn’t Gurl! Lol Why does calling someone a Queen only comes from gay men as a way to insult? Hmmm..funny that.
ChrisK
@CaliKyle: Ha. Before I could finish my response another comes along with the Queen insult. I think some of you might want to hold a mirror up to yourselves. Seems this is a form of self hate.
Queen (slang) – Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_(slang)
In gay slang, queen is a term used to refer to flamboyant or effeminate gay man. A drag queen is a person, usually a man, who dresses, and usually acts, like a woman often for the purpose of entertaining or performing.
ChrisK
@Billy Budd:The fact is he exclusively goes for the young. Everyone knows that. He found Tom when he was a teenager. You said their relationship should be put on a pedestal for the world to see. All I said was that I disagreed with that status because of the pedophile stereotype that many have of gay people.
Jim
@Eye of the Beholder: He probably is laughing that you’ve never accomplished anything important in your life!
He BGB
I want to see the series. it doesn’t say what network.time to Google….it says ABC 7 parts but doesn’t give a date. Hey, any of you queens, i mean, anyone know when it airs?
lykeitiz
@ChrisK: My apologies. I didn’t think Queerty would let me write b*tches.
ChrisK
@lykeitiz: Pulease. Queen is your go to insult. Ironic indeed.
Sandym70
“Collapsed in his arms?” I thought I was about to read a gay version of a Barbara Cartland novel. Stop editorializing and perhaps focus on some stronger more relevant items.
Eye of the Beholder
@Baba Booey Fafa Fooey: Are you judging me?
Eye of the Beholder
@Jim: Lol! Smart post. You and me both then dumb kid? If that’s your view then what’s your definition of important and/or an accomplishment for the record, and then tell us all how and why you feel you didn’t just backhand your own self.
Bonny1986
Eye of the Beholder
me too
Chris
I have a straight colleague who, whenever he gets a book to the publisher, takes off by himself for a week vacation somewhere and doesn’t tell anyone where he’s going. Once, I ran into him walking down a street in Honolulu. That’s how I learned that he does this.
DLB isn’t doing anything that different from what my colleague does. Both say this work is mentally exhausting.
And I agree with them. People should reward themselves when they finish things they set out to do.
bebop beep
@Eye of the Beholder: I think he is asking why do you like to laugh at other people’s failures? Are you so jealous of his accomplishments that you take joy in watching him not succeed?
bjoh249
I don’t see a dad and son here. In fact, DLB looks closer to 25 (which is just a few years older than Daley) than 42. Both Black and Daley are consenting adults anyway so there is nothing pedo about it. Most pedos are str8 men.
IDoNotHaveToAgreeWithYou
We show be far more worried about this being a poorly researched millenial load of garbage full of trans lies and misinformation rather than real gay history.

@Eye of the Beholder: Last Place? His team medaled in 3rd place out of 8 teams in the world for the synch 10m platform dive – Brazil was in last place…in the individual 10m platform, he scored 1st place in the preliminaries but it just takes one ‘off’ dive to knock you out which happened in the second round. Daley is far from last…with his endorsements, he will laugh his way to the bank. Keep laughing, it gives you character!
DavidIntl
@nathan_dostal: As someone in a strong long-term relationship with a larger age difference than the one between these guys, I get really tired of the snarky comments here. As an LGBT community, we have fought hard to get the world to accept the idea that two men can sincerely love each other. Why are there so many within our community who seem unwilling to accept the idea that two men of different ages can sincerely love each other?
Baba Booey Fafa Fooey
@bebop beep: He’s a gay man “failing”, so it’s funny to him.
ChrisK
@DavidIntl: No one cares about age differences unless it looks completely ridiculous. In that case you should stop bitching about everyone looking at you and just accept your nothing but a clown car joke. If you’re both past say 30 on the otherhand it’s not a big deal because there isn’t such a immaturity issue on one side and they’ve had a chance to grow up. People won’t care.
ChrisK
@DavidIntl: Oh and stop with the coded “different ages”. We all know that you mean. Old guys chasing after the young. In that case 98% of the time it’s nothing more then a mix of dillusion on one side and ka ching on the other.
Eye of the Beholder
@bebop beep: “other people’s failures”
That’s speculation. Whatever it is he’s trying to say he can speak it for himself.
Eye of the Beholder
@strix1: “Last Place? His team medaled in 3rd place”
You had to change the topic to compete. Desperate to speak to me? Told on yourself. Try adoration next time. You’re just a fan, and I can recognize the signs of petty jealousy myself.
“Keep laughing, it gives you character!”
I’m laughing at your lunatic policing attempts. Ha ha ha! Triggered? Shame yourself.
Eye of the Beholder
@Baba Booey Fafa Fooey: Don’t act triggered by my posts now Baba. You are bigger than that aren’t you?
Eye of the Beholder
I found the couple’s fame wh-ring during the Olympics shameless and pretentious. And then Tom got up, and scored the lowest of all.
Tom trying too hard with an original dive that he couldn’t even perform while the commentators struggled to not sound too condescending in the background afterwards. His absolutely dashed attempt as self-indulgence.
It was both objective and cathartic; a train wreck nobody saw coming. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I enjoyed the moment. He had it coming, and there it was. Lol!
nathan_dostal
@DavidIntl: no one is doubting that they love each other. Psychology tells us that a teen of 19 isn’t fully formed so to presume he is ready to be in a committed relationship for the next sixty years is absurd. Also, not to make too fine a point, a 42 year old man who dates someone who could be his son has some issues himself. They made it our business by shoving their relationship in front of the world, we are in love, we are getting married, etc. It wont last-it simply cannot.
