Some big guns make their home entertainment debuts this week: Ben Affleck’s Golden Globe-winning Argo, about the outrageous real-life plot that rescued six Americans from Iran, arrives in advance of what may be an Oscar cleaner-upper. Speaking of 1980s action, Tom Cruise’s blockbuster breakthrough, Top Gun, gets the 3D treatment.

Also out this week: A queer teen in Belgium comes of age in North Sea, Texas, while a couple of Parisian hustlers make a  connection and find danger in  Our Paradise.

Belgian director Bavo Defurne makes his feature debut with this tale of an introverted teen whose crushes on both an older neighbor and a male lodger his mother is pursuing present him with a surplus of  adolescent angst. As with his acclaimed short films, Defurne presents painterly, striking compositions while the camera lens lingers on his oft-shirtless male stars.

Ben Affleck’s Oscar-nominated thriller dramatizes how CIA operative Tony Mendez infiltrated Iran during the hostage crisis to rescue six Americans hiding in the Canadian ambassador’s home using a fake sci-fi movie project. The fact that this all really happened gives the film an added layer of absurdity. Incredible performances, outrageous period haircuts and alternately tense and humorous chapters contribute to one of 2012’s best films. Extras include a director’s commentary, a full-length 2005 documentary on the “Canadian Caper,” and a picture-in-picture experience featuring firsthand accounts from Agent Mendez, President Carter and others involved with the operation.
