DVD: “Ex Machina,” “Hidden Away,” “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” & More!

Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something gay (of course) is what lies in store in home entertainment this week!

We’ve got a taut sci-fi flick (Ex Machina, above), a sequel to an India-set senior citizen dramedy, a tale of gay youth, and, for fans of LGBT film festivals, a whopping, free online selection of 30 queer shorts, features and documentaries from Los Angeles’ Outfest (available to stream until end of the year) at Outfest Online.

Now for the details…

Ex Machina

($24.99 Blu-ray, $19.99 DVD; Lionsgate)

28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland makes his directorial debut with this smart, taut sci-fi chamber piece about a young techie (Domhnall Gleeson) who’s invited to the compound of an arrogant computer genius (Oscar Isaac) to test out the artificial intelligence of a beguiling female robot (Alicia Vikander) he’s created. Of course, things aren’t necessarily what they seem… The effects, performances (Isaac and Gleeson will also appear together in the new Star Wars), and storytelling are top notch, and Garland proves as promising a full-fledged genre auteur as Duncan Jones. Extras include a making-of, a cast and crew Q&A at SXSW and behind the scenes vignettes.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

($39.99 Blu-ray, $29.98 DVD: 20th Century Fox)

In this sequel to the sleeper hit about an Indian hotelier and the elderly British folk that turn his ramshackle hotel into a successful residence for retirees, the still-sexy Richard Gere joins the cast. Alas, Tom Wilkinson’s gay character is no longer with us, but there are still some laughs to be had and of course the likes of Dame Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel. Extras including making-of featurettes.

Hidden Away

($19.99 DVD; TLA)

Two 14-year-old boys in Bilbao, Spain — Ibrahim, a Moroccan who could be deported if found out, and young-looking Rafa — struggle with their feelings for each other and being ostracized in this gay coming-of-age drama.
