THE SCREENING ROOM

DVD: “Spider-Man” “Sunset Boulevard,” “Hollywood to Dollywood,” And More

Technically The Amazing Spider-Man comes to DVD and Blu-ray on Friday (guess they wanted to avoid the election madness) but there’s a interesting assortment of indies and documentaries hitting stores today, as well as a digitally remastered classic.

Queer actor Charlie David goes behind the camera with Positive Youth (above), an unflinching documentary about HIV-positive twentysomethings; Emily Blunt and Rosemary DeWitt serve laughs and tears in the  dramedy Your Sister’s Sister; Gay twin brothers John and Gary Lavin take their love of Dolly Parton to extremesin the road-trip doc Hollywood to Dollywood; and Gloria Swanson is finally ready for her Blu-ray close-up in the re-issue of the iconic Sunset Boulevard.

The Amazing Spider-Man
($55.99 Blu-ray, $30.99 DVD; Sony)

It’s awfully soon to reboot this superhero franchise, and director Marc Webb’s attempt suffers for it. Andrew Garfield is no slouch as Peter Parker (ditto for Emma Stone as his girl Gwen Stacy) but the whole thing feels choppy and contrived. The Blu-ray offers the film in 3D (if you have a 3D set), as well as a commentary by Webb and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. There’s also a seven-part doc, “Rite of Passage: The Amazing Spider-Man Reborn,” deleted scenes, production art galleries for Spidey and The Lizard,  a digital-effects featurette with commentary, a tie-in for the video game and more. Whew!

Your Sister’s Sister
($29.98 Blu-ray, $24.98 DVD; MPI Home Video)

Struggling to come to terms with the death of his brother, Jack (Mark Duplass) is offered a safe haven at his ex-girlfriend’s mountain home. Once there he stumbles upon his ex’s sister Hannah (Mad Men’s Rosemary DeWitt), a lesbian who has just gotten out of a long-term relationship. The two eventually find solace in each other’s misery, but the specter of sexual tension soon arises. Co-starring Emily Blunt, Your Sister’s Sister is an engaging and well-crafted character study, but you may find yourself wishing it had tried something new. Extra features includes a commentary by Duplass and director Lynn Shelton.

Hollywood to Dollywood
($24.00 DVD, Breaking Glass Pictures)

Hoping to tempt Dolly Parton with a part in their new movie, gay twins John and Gary Levin rent an RV (christened Jolene, of course) and make a pilgrimage to Dollywood in this unusual American documentary. The two encounter all manner of horrors (including a flood) but persist in their dream—even as they pray their coming out doesn’t cause friction in their North Carolina hometown. Dollywood includes cameos by Chad Allen and Dustin Lance Black, and music from Parton herself, including new songs “Celebrate the Dreamer in You” and “The Sky is Not the Limit.” The DVD includes  75 extra minutes of footage and interviews with the directors and stars.

Sunset Boulevard
($26.98 Bluray, Paramount)

Gloria Swanson made film history with her iconic turn as aging silent-film star Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder’s 1950 film noir masterpiece, now finally on Blu-ray. While the plot is pretty basic—a hack screenwriter is hired to write a script for an eccentric has-been movie star—Swanson mesmerizes with a perfectly over-the-top performance that has since come to be one of the most imitated in film history. Extras include a making-of featurette and a documentary on legendary costume designer Edith Head.
