Eddie Redmayne didn’t win his second Oscar this year, but he recently learned an unforgettable lesson that he wants to share with fans. The photogenic actor who won acclaim for his portrayal of trans pioneer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl toured L.A.’s LGBT Center’s Youth Center in Hollywood and met with 70 queer homeless teens for a large buffet breakfast, courtesy of the film’s distributor Focus Features.
According to the Center’s press release:
The youth had lots of questions for Redmayne, and he had lots of questions for Center CEO Lorri L. Jean as he learned about the Center’s services to help and empower youth to build successful, independent lives for themselves. He was particularly shocked to learn that about 40% of the youth experiencing homelessness in L.A. are LGBT or questioning. He was also so impressed by the Center’s services—particularly the success of the GED and employment programs—that he offered to record a short video message to promote support for the Center.

And just when I thought I couldn’t adore Eddie Redmayne any more than I already do.
I’m going to check whether we have a comparable youth charity locally, but if we don’t, I’ll definitely be donating to the LA Center.
Ben Stimpson
He’s going to be one of Britians and Hollywood’s top actors one day, he’s such a class act.
Billy Budd
He is cute and adorable. I think I am in love.

@ProfessorMoriarty: And if not, why not start one yourself?
Ha! I know — money, time and energy are always in short supply. But seriously, maybe your community needs one. Thanks for your support!

@Ummmm Yeah:
Absolutely. Just don’t use the word at all.
I feel disrespected by the young’uns using that awful word.
It’s claimed that to use it is to ‘reclaim’ the word.
Bull.
Why O why?
Have we elders completely failed to educate the younger ones about what we survived (and in some cases, still going through) the damage that horrible word brought about on a daily basis?
It may be ‘trendy’ to use it but we all get hurt by the perpetuation of such verbiage.
Stop it, already.

Awwww … what a cute puppy dog face. And that voice!
I love that shirt he’s wearing, with the rainbow stripes on the inner lapel. Does that shirt come like that, or are the stripes something the Center gave him just for the PSA? Regardless, I’d love to buy that shirt or the stripes.

@Sammy Schlipshit: I dont’t like “queer” either but it’s here to stay. If it was merely used by young gays, it would soon fade since young people are notoriously fickle. But it is now firmly entrenched in academia, i.e. “Queer Studies,” “Queer Cinema,” etc. Colleges are now offering courses with “queer” in their titles. So you might as well just accept it.
For what it’s worth, many gays once rejected the word, “gay,” preferring “homosexual.” In fact, the gay-friendly and influential NY Times didn’t use “gay” until the 80’s. Its preference for “homosexual” was more about linguistic formalism than homophobia. One may argue that “gay” never had the negative connotation that “queer” has, but it’s not true. “Gay” was used to mean sexually wanton or promiscuous in the 19th and early 20th century.

@Bryguyf69:
Thanks for the info.
I am very disappointed in the HuffingtonPost replacing ‘Gay News’ with that horrid word.
This is another example of defiance and arrogance being smacked in our faces.
The HuffPost defense for the name change was just juvenile, short sighted and ignorant.
Any use of that word legitimizes the usage for everyone to still label us while denigrating.
No doubt there are elder generations of black folks who also despise the word n***** that younger people have been bantering about.
We homos are not alone when it comes to failing passing down our history, warts and all.
All in all and everything considered, it’s a good time to be close to death.
I’ve seen the future and it ain’t pretty.

@Sammy Schlipshit: I agree 100%. It’s as if HP decided to target mostly young people living in urban areas.
Back to Redmayne: I’ve adored him and admired his work since I first saw him as the troubled son in GOOD SHEPHARD as the son of Matt Damon’s character. Then he blew me away as the sociopathic son in SAVAGE GRACE.
He continues to deliver excellent work (JUPITER ASCENDING, forgiven). His brothers and sister are adorable, too! Here he is with older bro Tom: https://www.google.com/search?q=eddie+redmayne+brothers&biw=1097&bih=1054&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwixuoejraDLAhVQw2MKHQQ4DRAQ_AUIBigB#imgrc=279yWj79vIMqmM%3A
