Elton John is so convinced Lady Gaga‘s third studio album Born This Way is gonna rock your glittery disco ball world, it’s given him reason to dismiss Gloria Gaynor: “Her record—it’s fucking amazing. ‘Born This Way,’ which is the title song, will completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive.’ This is the new ‘I Will Survive.’ That was the gay anthem. This is the new gay anthem. Actually, it’s not a gay anthem—it can apply to anybody.” Preemptively declaring a song the new gay anthem? Isn’t that what Katy Perry tried to do with “Peacock”? How about we let the shirtless club kids pick their own playlist and go from there, okay Elton?
A few bars she premiered at the VMAs:

Elton, Maddona and the like are merely trying to grab onto Gaga’s fame-train coat tails as they know she is the “IT” music star at the moment. A few years ago it was Britney, before that it was Ricky. Stars who have been around awhile know it’s good business sense to shake a little from the glam-tree of whoever is the most popular at the moment. That said, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Gaga and hope she is around for at least as long as Cher!
pete
@Ian: The solar system hasn’t been around as long as Cher!
Black Pegasus
Fuck Gaga and that Flame Elton!
If I went to a guy’s house and discovered he was a Gaga fan, I’d first go to his bathroom and THROW UP, then I’d never call his sissy ass back. Those two are walking parodies! No Real Style nor Talent what so ever!
pete
@Black Pegasus: Then sign me up as a huge fan of Gaga and Elton.
Blake J
@Black Pegasus: And you are relevant why?
jason
I do not like being treated as one of “the gays” by anybody. I don’t like being told what my new “anthem” is going to be. Elton, your brain has deteriorated since the days you made good songs, such as that one you did with Kiki Dee. One wonders if Alzheimer’s has set in.
As for Lady Gaga, she’s simply appealing to “the gays” to make money. She’s buying her mansions. You’re all contributing to it. Her so-called “bisexuality” was a marketing ploy designed to get the attention of sleazy straight guys and their female enablers.
At heart, Lady Gaga is basically a pretentious female art student.
jason
Black Pegasus,
You rule.
You’ve obviously gotten the gander of the dysfunctional gay set up. By “dysfunctional gay set”, I’m referring to the type of gay men who see glory in nearly-naked women flashing their vaginas for the salacious masses. Could be a case of vagina envy.
Dysfunctional gay guys tend to do several things:
a) dance to mindless beats synthesised from a no-talent DJ’s computer,
b) admire drag queens with poor mouth coordination while miming to 30 year old songs on a rickety stage in a tiny corner of a gay bar next to the toilets,
c) prop up sleazy females who use their bodies and sexuality as a ploy to market themselves to the type of men who hate gays.
Diz
Love Gaga and can’t wait for the new album.

Madonna is always latching on to the flavour of the week. I heard last year that she was talking to Janet about doing a duet a few months after Michael’s death.

@jason: “As for Lady Gaga, she’s simply appealing to “the gays” to make money. She’s buying her mansions. You’re all contributing to it.”
Yeah, and? We like what she’s selling. That’s how the market works.
hmm
GAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
My life has been a bit on the unexciting side (work, work work…) and i realized that it’s partly b/c gaga has not had a new video release lately :). I’m actually not joking. She has breathed new life into the world of pop for me.
rose sandberg
more like ..national.. anthem
AdonisOfFire
I sure do 😀 I already covered it acapella of course…hitting a soprano high C (and I’m a man).

Hey some of us are bisexual, thank you. Jerk.

Then here’s some really good news for you HMM:

@Ian:

Thanks, man–looks like Boys Boys Boys will be next! Whatever her next video is, I wonder if will constitute her Part 3 continuation of Paparazzi & Telephone.
The anticipation!!!
SouLKid
You mean her 15 minutes is not over yet (!?)
Lord!
Ian
@SouLKid: I don’t think that Lady Gaga is going to burn out like either Britney (personal problems) or Ricky (went back to spanish-only countries) professionally. I get the same career vibe as an early Madonna, I think Stephanie is here to stay.
Brutus
@AdonisOfFire: Just because one can do a thing does not mean that one should do a thing.
Damien
I hope the finished song makes those cringeworthy lyrics less noticeable.
Ian
@Damien: My hope is that she’ll have a possy of both gals & gays singing the lyrics w/her, the fundies heads will pop if the video pans back and forth between hetero & homo gay love of the boys!
AdonisOfFire
@Brutus:
God gave me a 5+ octave range for a reason 🙂 so I should work it out. You must be a Christina Aguilera stan…
Jesus
Dude, it’s not just going to top “I Will Survive” it’s going to top “Amazing Grace”.
nineinchnail
She is a talentless whore who wishes that she had half the talent Madonna has. She wont last five years after people start thinking she is getting repetative.
Ian
@nineinchnail: Ah so it’s the old “back in MY day there was REAL music, not this garbage kids listen to today!” Besides some stylistic differences, I find that Lady Gaga & Madonna have a fair amount in common if you look at them as both artists & business women. Get with the times, new artists are usually just updates of previous ones if you look close enough. I choose to enjoy the new ones that come along as I don’t want my music rack to have the same dusty six tracks, I want to accept and age with the changing times, be OPEN to new musicians and the younger generations man!
Kev C
Everything she writes sounds like it was writen by a 12yo Junior High student on the back of a notebook. Amateur must be the new Professional.
Tim
LOL
A song with reference to ‘god’ should NEVER become a gay anthem.
I am born this way because it is natural to be gay. Gay is well documented in nature it has nothing to do with any ‘god’
SpiffyShindigs
I see we’re out in full force bashing people who do nothing but support us again.
Seriously, folks? Gaga is a good musician. Stop bashing her just to be contrarians.
DR
Gotta agree with Spiffy…although for different reasons.
Personally, I don’t care if this becomes the great gay anthem or not; if it’s a good song, I’ll download it. I’m not ashamed to admit I do own a few of her songs, and they’re great background music when I run 10 miles. For casual listening? Yeah, not so much, I lean more towards rock bands headed up by male singers who write about a wide range of topics It’s what I grew up with; metal, classic rock, punk, and I still love it. And I’ll take gay performers such as Bob Mould, Eric Himan, Rob Halford, or Jason and deMarco over Lady GaGa any day of the week when I want a “gay performer” fix (especially Eric, he’s a great guy).
Until we get songs like Eric Himan’s “Little Boy Blue” (about a transgender youth he met while on tour and the *perfect* anthem for what’s going on right now) or other gay-positive songs from GLBT men and women on the airwaves, we as a community have no one to blame but ourselves for straight women “adopting us” as “their gays” and writing comedy skits or songs about us.
I’ll be honest, I hate that crap as much as a lot of people posting here, but the GLBT community isn’t all that great at supporting or marketing GLBT performers, so we’re stuck with straight women marketing music we are supposed to be able to relate to. It’s a a fact I’ve never understood, although I refuse to attribute it to Jason’s vile and silly idea of “vagina envy”.
Matt
Gaga is alright, I suppose. She has a good voice and catchy tunes. However, the Arcade Fire’s new album “The Suburbs” is an amazing collection of songs. Musically, lyrically, and thematically, they surpass anything she’s done. Yet all I hear about is Gaga and Bieber. I’m only 25 and already so un-hip. Anyways, Elton John played in both Israel and Arizona, undermining attempts to boycott them in regards to their policies. He’s also played Rush Limbaugh’s wedding, even though Rush has said so many inflammatory things against the lGBT community. I’d really prefer if Elton didn’t speak on behalf of my sense of taste, as I feel he lacks any.
Matt
Also, if you want a gay anthem, try “Smells like Happiness” by the Hidden Cameras.
Ian
@DR: If you like male gay performers I was curious what you think of American Sign Language interpreter & performance cover artist, along with emerging singer of his own music Michael Chase DiMartino? He was even asked not that long ago to ASL interpret at one of Lady Gaga’s concerts. His own music is definitely 90’s pop influenced, not rock, but I find his videos & music positively infectious. He has 4 songs on itunes so far.
mconyc08
Well, truth is, anything you say, Elton, means horseshit to me. I really have NO respect for any gay who would whore himself out and play at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding.
That’s all.
DR
@Ian:
His stuff is fun, albeit not really my style (not big into dance music, but if he released a DC, I’d take a listen). But I give him props for all the interpreting he does and being out and open and performing. I remember when he released “Womanizer”, it caught my eye.
nineinchnail
@Ian: I love Amy Winehouse and Adele so I do like some stuff around these days. The afoementioned have talent and vision and they can actually sing. Their songs arent drivel….that is the difference. 🙂
Robert
@mconyc08:
Exactly.
A BBG
@jason: You’re just such an individual!

I voted “Fail” because Katy Perry is a fake. Katy Perry doesn’t understand why Beth Ditto is important to us. I love Gaga’s appreciation for Elton John (though I never got Elton John) and she’s doing some amazing things. I’m less interested in her music and more interested in ability to mobilize or antagonize. She’s a thoughtful, smart, savvy person, and also a pop star.
hmm
gaga’s newest jam, y’all
