I’ve been sober for 24 years now, and one of the best lessons it taught me is to listen. When it comes to people like Rush Limbaugh, or people who might enrage you sometimes, dialogue is the only way. You have to reach out. Whether you make an impact in one year or 30 years, it doesn’t matter. You have to put your foot in the water and start the process. Better to build a bridge than a wall.”
— Elton John in a wide-ranging interview with the New York Times
QJ201
Elton must be working that Hollywood recovery. He is so full of shit.
Desert Boy
B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T. I repeat, B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T.
Rush Limbaugh paid Elton John $1 million to sing a few ditties at his wedding. When the controversy reached fever-pitch, Elton agreed to donate his fee to the Elton John AIDS Foundation and not his bank account.
Let’s keep it real. Elton John is a scumbag.
AtticusBennett
to be fair, Elton didn’t donate the money “after the controversy” – for decades, Elton’s north-american-made money has gone to his AIDS foundation. all of it. he doesn’t need one million dollars, and he hasn’t for decades. i’m not saying i agree with what he did, but we have to be fair – the money was always going to be going to his charity.
Trippy
There is nothing I enjoy more than watching (or in his case) listening to a right-winger’s head explode after a major defeat, which is why I don’t typically object to the fact that one of my co-workers listens to Rush a couples of days a week on her desktop. Listening to Rush coming to terms with Obama’s reelection in 2012 was one of the best days I ever had. He was livid.
With that being said, I’ve noticed that Rush rarely if ever talks about gay rights or gay marriage. Post-Windsor, Rush has barely mentioned the quick and important gains we’ve made on the marriage equality front. It’s possible that he’s simply seen the writing on the wall and moved on to other battles, or, as I’ve often suspected, he’s not as phobic as some of compatriots. I don’t know, and we’ll probably never know, but the one thing he’s not doing anymore is raging about LGBT issues and marriage equality. So, if nothing else, kudos to him for keeping his mouth shut and for realizing that his fellow conservatives are on the wrong side of history.
BJ McFrisky
Wow. Just wow.
Limbaugh may be a far-Righty, but he’s no “enemy of the gays.”
People who consider bitterness their only option would do well to follow John’s path in choosing to listen to others rather than dismissing them as unworthy simply because GLAAD told them to.
Alton
And, of course, if they’re willing to pay you a million dollars to perform at their wedding. That, and listening.
And of COURSE Rush LImbaugh is an enemy of the gays. Anyone who supports the rabid right wing in this country and denigrates the left is an enemy of gays, whether they go around specifically mentioning same-sex marriage or not.
Rush Limbaugh is puss-filled hemorrhoid on the asshole of America, and Elton John regularly licks that hemorrhoid.
AtticusBennett
@BJ McFrisky: what would you know? your own family resents having you for a son.
for those who choose to pretend Limbaugh doesn’t hate gays, likely because they want to make their own bigoted daddys happy (hey mcfrisky! what’s it like being a total disappointment to your dad, eh?)
Compares gay marriage to loving his couch.
A guest caller suggested to Limbaugh it’s time to take a step back and taking a look at what “progressiveness” is doing to the nuclear family unit. Limbaugh interrupted, saying, “I love my sofa. I sit on it every night.”
“If I could marry my sofa, I might think about it. And maybe in a few years, it could be possible,” Limbaugh concluded. “You never know.”
Claims gay marriage will destroy society.
According to El Rushbo, same-sex marriage is “corrupt” and will eventually lead to the end of civilization.
“Freedom is hedonism,” Rush explains “You do whatever you want, and as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody else, there’s nothing wrong with it. And it’s the ‘as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody else,’ that’s where the trouble begins. Because is there great harm to a society when an age-old, I mean, as old as humanity itself custom is corrupted?”
Gay Marriage will lead to pedophilia.
Expanding on a caller’s argument against gay marriage, Limbaugh says we are enjoy the equal ability to make contracts. And if same-sex marriage fits the bill on a contract, why can’t anything else?
“…[I]f same-sex fits the bill of the contract, then everything fits the bill,” Limbaugh explains. “And at some point who’s to say that you cannot have sex with a child… some point.”
Gay Marriage is no different than bestiality.
Mocking a Miami lawyer over a case involving a gay couple’s adoption choice of having two lesbians and one gay man on the birth certificate, Limbaugh defended previous comments he made claiming the definition of marriage will change.
“I remember being laughed at and mocked and called an extremist for predicting that definitions of family– what constitutes family– is now wide open,” Limbaugh decried. “Pretty soon you’re going to be able to marry your dog– your dog is going to be an official part of your family who qualifies for benefits.”
LGBT members don’t deserve equal rights because they’re only 2 percent of the population.
So much for protecting the little guy. Limbaugh defended his anti-gay views by noting that the gay population is so small, we shouldn’t be inconveniencing anyone over them.
“Do we really want to totally redo cultural standards established from the beginning of humanity for 2 percent of the population?” Limbaugh asked. “No.”
Liberals want to normalize pedophilia, just like they did with gay marriage.
According to Rush, progressives have a secret agenda in their promotion of marriage equality, and it has nothing to do with equal rights.
“There’s a movement to normalize pedophilia. Don’t pooh-pooh it,” Limbaugh said. “I guarantee you your reaction to that is probably much the same as your reaction when you first heard about gay marriage. What has happened to gay marriage? It’s become normal. And, in fact, with certain people in certain demographics it’s the most important issue in terms of who they vote for.”

Elton is full of baloney… at least as it relates to Limbaugh.
Yes, forgiveness is important, more for yourself than the person receiving, & building a bridge rather than a wall is a worthy platitude… But, as Oprah likes to say, “when a person shows himself to you, believe him.”
In this case, I think it works for them both.

And once again, as has been said probably hundreds of times before. BJ will ALWAYS come to the defense of ANY anti-gay bigot because he will ALWAYS shill for the GOP.
And as per usual BJ will make a comment and hope that nobody calls him on it because he never, ever provides a link or any proof.
But once again, in BJ’s world, ANY anti-gay bigot will have him rushing here to defend them.

YAWN…Could I get another latte, please?

I’ll somewhat agree that Limbaugh isn’t as openly or rabidly anti-gay, not like he used to be, but I would stop short of believing that he’s gone soft on gay issues. Limbaugh has a history of conflict with his sponsors and if he’s toning it down as of late, then it’s probably to stop the bleeding from some of his advertisers and NOT because he’s loves him some gay marriage. For Limbaugh (and probably Hannity, too) it’s about $$$ and not pissing off their gravy train. Limbaugh is a huge Apple addict, and they actually send him stuff to give away on his show. With Tim Cook’s recent announcement, I’d wager that Rush is doing everything he can to avoid pissing off Apple.
But if you really want to hear some openly hostile gay-hating bigotry, tune into the guy named Joe Pags. I think he’s broadcast out of Texas. He thinks we’re evil (literally) and has no problem saying so on just about every broadcast. He’s on the record as supporting the recriminalization of gays and regularly links sexual orientation to pedophilia. He’s a vile, nasty piece of work. BJ McFrisky would love him.

Just two former drug addicts hanging together.

That’s quite a non sequitur, if someone is sober for 24 years and therefore feels he absolutely MUST have a “dialogue” with Rush Limbaugh. How odd.
Such a horrifying notion would certainly never occur to me. I don’t know how drunk or stoned I’d need to be to spend even a few minutes with Rush Limbaugh, but I’m guessing I’d have to be pretty zonked! (Ugh – preferably to the point of remembering little or nothing about the experience afterward.)
BJ McFrisky
@AtticusBennett: You stated, “Your own family resents having you for a son,” but I have two dads who are hella-proud of me so IN YOUR FACE, bigot.
@Cam: Your problem is that you’re a hopeless hater. You hate anyone who doesn’t agree with you. You hate any idea that doesn’t conform to yours. And, worst of all, you hate other gay people who aren’t in lockstep with you. All of which makes you a good gay Nazi. Sieg heil, herr Cam, sieg heil.
AtticusBennett
@BJ McFrisky: prove it. HAHA! you can’t. because you’re, of course, a lying trolling wimp 🙂
but hey – we all get it. you come in here to troll because you need a distraction from the reality that you’re a complete and utter embarrassment, and don’t have the balls to back up any of your claims.
two dads that are proud of you? #proveit

On behalf of Elton, let me just say to the bitter, bitchy queens who think they can dictate who another gay man chooses to be friends with….go give yourself an enema. And get a life while you’re at it.
1EqualityUSA
Both of them make my skin crawl, oddly, in different directions. (help…)
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
There have been rumors about Rush Windbag for a long time that he likes thin Latino hustler boys. He has burned through at least 3 “marriages” one of which I believe he met thru some online dating service and got married after a few dates…….
When Elton was in NYC two or three tours ago there were rumors of him hiring hustlers…….
Maybe they were exchanging hustlers numbers? :p

Gee, BJ, your origional comment was that Limbaugh was no enemy of the gays, then attacked gays as bitter etc… for not thinking that.
My comment pointed out correctly, that you always make statements defending anti-gay bigots but NEVER EVER put up a link or proof to back up your comment.
Now, what would a logical person do if they were telling the truth about Limbaugh not hating gays? They would…….put up a link or proof to back up their comments.
What did YOU do? You attacked, called me a Nazi etc… Hmmmm, why would you do that, when if you weren’t lying you could simply put up a link to proof that I was wrong? You didn’t do that because once again, as always, you were lying, and have no proof to back up your statement.
And calling people Nazi’s for calling out your defense of every anti-gay bigot out there is not just ridiculous, it’s sad and pathetic, and the kind of things that groups like NOM tried years ago. It didn’t work for them either.
So once again, you defended an anti-gay bigot, got called out, and couldn’t back up your lie as always.
AtticusBennett
@Cam: there’s a reason trolls like BJ do what they do – when they have nothing of worth in their own lives, and can’t show and prove that their lies are true (they aint’!) they come on line to bitch about all the people whose lives are better than theirs. Liberals. Openly gay people. “Effeminate stereotypical queens”
BJ is a textbook internet coward – right-leaning, unloved, and homely as they come.

@QJ201: Yes, it is easy to be cynical and say Sir Elton is full of it. Of course, he was paid full price for performing at one of the loudmouth billionaire’s marriages. I am only concerned that a counter-argument to his logic here is the old adage that true communication is only possible among equals. What state was Sir Elton married in? In the opioid-addicted shock jock’s Florida, there is no marriage equality.
john.k
For heaven’s sake guys would you all calm down. You don’t persuade people to your point of view by shouting at them. You do it by patient engagement. Perhaps Elton has realised that.
1EqualityUSA
john.k, If Rush Scumbagh were relevant I could see putting that amount of careful calculation into him.
Hillers
“Better to build a bridge than a wall.”
Beautifully said. If you want to change someone’s mind, you have to start by listening to them. Then you can unpeel the Fox News soundbites and gently rebuff them with bits and pieces of logic that they might naturally come to a more sound conclusion. Plus, it’s much more difficult to insult someone to their face if they’re willing to extend the olive branch first. Judging from the comments above, seems we could all try and take that advice.
Cam
@Hillers:
Except for the fact that Elton John had some money troubles, he took a million dollars to play one of Rush’s weddings, took crap for it, so now has to pretend that he didn’t just whore himself out for the cash.
“I’m Building bridges” sounds much more noble than “I whored myself out as a performing minstrel to an anti-gay bigot because I need the cash.”
1EqualityUSA
Hillers said, “Then you can unpeel the Fox News soundbites and gently rebuff them with bits and pieces of logic that they might naturally come to a more sound conclusion.” mhmm, Rachel Maddow’s been doing that for years. It doesn’t stop the fox trot.
Saint Law
@Hillers: I dunno. I mean it isn’t like the ‘phobes arrived at their bigotry through using their reason is it? So I’m not sure how effective rational argument is in countering it.
I think sustained and uncompromising assertion of our rights and dignity is more effective tbh.
They may not like us but can still be made to respect us if we prove a formidable enough foe.

I’m all for reaching out, but my arms are not that long.

Obviously, Elton John and some folks here have no idea of Limbaugh’s contempt towards lgbt. Here are just a few of his quotes from last year:
“There is a movement on to normalize pedophilia, and I guarantee you your reaction to that is probably much the same as your reaction when you first heard about gay marriage. What has happened to gay marriage? It’s become normal…” Limbaugh, 1/8/13 (Audio/Media Matters)
Limbaugh Refers To Transgender Student As An “Add-A-Dick-To-Me Babe” 1/14/13 (Audio/Media Matters)
Limbaugh Laments He Can’t Ask Whether Chief Justice’s Lesbian Cousin Is Obese Or An Alcoholic Because He’ll Look “Mean” – 2/23/13 (Audio/Media Matters)
“She was talking about contracts, folks, just so you understand. And we all are equal in the ability to make contracts. Everybody can contract with a member of the opposite sex to marry them. But her point was that if same-sex fits the bill of the contract, then everything fits the bill. And at some point who’s to say that you cannot have sex with a child…some point.” Limbaugh, 3/26/13 (Audio/Media Matters)
Limbaugh: Move To Extend Benefits To Same-Sex Partners In The Military Is “Reverse Discrimination” 2/20/13 (Audio/Media Matters)
Ronbo
ACT-UP proved Elton wrong… in so many ways. For years gays played the game and lost. It took burning the rule books to get change. A man paid to be a bigot isn’t going to change. You don’t kiss ebola and your don’t Rush into the liar’s den. Millionaires like Elton John don’t identify as gay, they identify as rich.
BJ McFrisky
@AtticusBennett: That’s the best you could do? That I’m homely?
I suspect your next insult will be that you’re rubber and I’m glue, or that my mother wears combat boots.
You’re about as edgy as a bubble. And as intelligent.
Cam
@BJ McFrisky:
Notice how BJ wouldn’t respond to the commentary about the fact that he claims Limbaugh is no enemy to gays, but he couldn’t put up any proof?
His first response was to attack the person who pointed that out, (me) calling me a Nazi, his second response is …..no response.
So again, BJ, you claim that Limbaugh isn’t anti-gay, funny how as always you are unable to back up your statement.
Cam
@Ronbo:
Great point, the same way that HRC was attacking gay people who DARED to criticize the non-movement of gay issues, and they even protected anti-gay democrats from having to vote on gay bills. They would claim “Oh, but they’re only anti-gay to get votes, in private they are great.”
And then Get Equal showed up, shook things up, did sit-in’s in Pelosi’s office and what happened? The house shoved the DADT repeal down the Administrations throat even though they had said no movement on gay rights anytime soon. Things changed fast after that.
And during all of that time, HRC was attacking Get Equal, Attacking Dan Choi, and trying to convince couples not to file lawsuits for marriage because it wasn’t time.
BJ McFrisky
@Cam:
You want proof that Limbaugh doesn’t hate all of us and want us dead? Because he hired Elton fucking John to perform at his wedding. No die-hard homophobe on the planet would do that, regardless of any rationalization you can come up with that says otherwise.
Your insistence that I respond personally to you in exactly the way you prefer and provide irrefutable proof of everything I say isn’t only annoying, it strongly serves to further prove your intolerance for anyone who doesn’t think just like you do.
AtticusBennett
@BJ McFrisky: or, you’re a typical right-leaning coward who will never show proof of anything because you have capers for testes 😀
Cam

Actually you said he wasn’t an enemy of the gays, I asked you to back up your comment because there are definitely anti-gay quotes from Limbaugh out there. And what was YOUR evidence? That he hired a gay guy to to work for him?
Really? So according to you, none of those families that hired black maids in the South were rac-ists?
And according to you, no man who has a woman employee is sexist? Yeah, MadMen sure showed us that.
Again, if you have this much trouble trying to defend your false comments, I have a solution. Stop making stuff up.
