What was gay about Elvis Presley, who would have turned 80 years old today? Not much, if you discount the typical gossipy, unsubstantiated rumors that spring up around every dead celeb. Still, the undisputed King of Rock ‘n’Roll must have excited closeted gay men during his hey day as few other entertainers before or since — and this was decades before gay-baiting teen idols like Nick Jonas became the norm. Come on, think about youthful Elvis and that wavy hair, those bee-stung lips, those swiveling hips! Sure, he became rather bloated in every conceivable way in the years just prior to his death in 1977 at age 42, but let’s look back at the undeniable beauty that helped make him rock’s first and greatest superstar.

Elvis was fab-tastic. He came along at a unique time in history and left his mark like no other performer.
Did you know that Elvis was the first performer to sing about men desiring each other and dancing with each other? The song was Jailhouse Rock.
Here’s a lyric from that song: no. 47 said to no. 3, you’re the cutest jailbird I ever did see.
And the video showed men being sexy with each other in dance-like poses.
Now tell me which other mainstream American male performer has done this in recent times. I can’t think of any. Today’s American male performers are largely homophobic. We’ve really gone backward.
