THE SHOT — Surely the Center For Media Research will follow up its “scissoring” criticism of Glee with another doozy of a press release over Entertainment Weekly‘s cover — featuring a heterosexual playing a homosexual, and a homosexual playing a homosexual — on gay teens on television.

Besides the non-bold clichéd showtunes-themed “Glee,” where else exactly is a bold new class of young characters changing hearts and minds? Because nothing comes to mind immediately.

Well although it may not be much since one of the characters is somewhat stereotypical, I do like that this show is watched by millions and is seen by middle America and they can see and appreciate gay teens. Which by the way, these are the people that need to be won over if we are to achieve anything.

@rodrigo: But according to the loudest and palest gays the majority of homophobes are black.
I’m so confused.

Jack, there’s plenty of gay teens on TV (some shows have ended in this list, but hey, re-runs and Hulu and BitTorrents):
* Luke & Noah – As The World Turns
* Justin – Ugly Betty
* Marshall – United States of Tara
* Lionel – United States of Tara
* Eric – Gossip Girl
* Griffin – Secret Life of the American Teenager
* Brad – The Middle (OMG! He’s not white!)
* Calvin – Greek
* Zane – Degrassi (OMG! *Another* non-white gay guy!)
* Riley – Degrassi
That’s just a partial list from 5 minutes of Googling. Considering the only recurring gay character on *all of TV* growing up was Jody on “Soap” who almost has a sex change, almost OD’s, regularly pumps pussy and by the end of the show had mutated in to an elderly Jewish man. Whee! Yeah, I’ll take the above list any day over the way it used to be.

@jack: Shameless on Shotime, loving it so far.

@jack:
90210.. Ted’s story line, althought the actor himself is not a teen, his character is in high school!!
Chris
Yeah, I’m not seeing the slim queens into fashion and theatre as being all that bold.
Hell, that cover is closer than those characters have ever gotten on the show.
Kurt is the woobie gay to be pitied by all the straight girls who watch. That’s all.
Ian
@jack: 90210, Degrassi, Glee, United States of Tara, Shameless, just off the top of my head…
