Understandably upset over her fellow Californian’s decision to prohibit gay marriage, aurally-inclined lesbian Melissa Etheridge has vowed to withhold the buckets of money the state would have reaped from her taxes. Writes Etheridge at the Daily Beast:
Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now.
…
Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.Okay, cool I don’t mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We’re gay!
Oooo, California, Etheridge sure told you!
daniel kemp
While I agree w/ the no taxation w/out representation, if you don’t pay they will just put you in jail.
MatthewScott
I agree w/Melissa! They can’t get all of us or even many of us. The state doesn’t have the resources. Schwarzenegger just came out today to talk about the desperate budget short fall and his plan to raise taxes to offset it. Guess the shortfall is going to be bigger than he thought!
ask ena
Wouldn’t it be cool if all the gays paid their California taxes with a pink monopoly $5 bill?
arjuna52
Please! Someone in California start to organize a tax revolt! The money could be put into an escrow account so as to show good intent by the queer taxpayers who participate in the rebellion!
Vague
This is the issue that the American Revolution was fought over.
Back then people said they would die for their cause. American freedom? Liberty? What crap.
Jeff
We are considered second class citizens and we shouldn’t have to pay taxes but we will BUT we can make a bigger statement by really sticky to a boycott of Marriott Hotels and all the hotels they own. They are all owned by the Mormons. All stop sending any money to any cause that other than gay/lesbian issues. Were not citizens so why help AMERICA a country that says were no equal. Spend your money in Spain were treated as equals. America greatest country on earth. Bom Humbug!
RobA
And those that don’t live in those H8 States should avoid going there and giving them sales tax revenue … pick other states to visit … avoid California, Florida – vacation in gay-friendly states
canada james
You can always come to Canada! Everything is equal here (except the dollar… yours is worth alot more!)
Seriously though, I don’t understand how organizations that don’t pay taxes can spend millions of dollars to deny the rights of people who do pay taxes. Makes no sense at all.
rayrayj
Can’t really wealthy people transfer their state of residency and create corporations so they are actually earning the money out of state, thereby making it all legal? Get a good stax lawyer and move everything to MA or CT.
rayrayj
uh ….tax lawyer
psy
“While I agree w/ the no taxation w/out representation, if you don’t pay they will just put you in jail.”
Not if it’s done in large enough numbers a-la mass civil disobedience.
John
The bigoted State of California is going to get a major tax hike. Schwarzenegger says he needs 4 billion dollars. And he needs it NOW.
He’s going to call the legislature back before January. They’re going to RAISE TAXES on these California idiots.
Apparently…there is a God!
And SHE’s not happy.
Scott
Um nice idea in theory, but as a DC resident, it doesn’t really fly that far. We’ve been the poster child for taxation without representation for a couple of hundred years or so.
John in CA
As others have pointed out, if she doesn’t want to pay taxes to California, she can move the bulk of her assets to other states or overseas. She can refuse to perform concerts in California. If you don’t “work” in a particular state, then you don’t have to pay state taxes. There are plenty of ways to get around it. With a good accountant, all things are possible.
CHURCHILL-Y
No..no..no..no Ms Etheridge, now is not the time to be advocating for mayhem.
Chairman Barack does not approve of such behavior and “he does not support it and is not inclined to fight for it, his advisers say.”
You see Ms Etheridge the time for revolution and the type of revolution was during and only for Baracks election(I love the support you gave him and the new DNC, it paid off girl!)not now.
Now we march in a good little line Ms Etheridge and us Gays and Lesbians go to the back of the bus till the next election, in which I’m sure you’ll be doing some fabulous interviews in LOGO and singing in rallies for Obama.
Now repeat after me YES WE CAN GO TO THE BACK OF THE BUS FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS!
L
I go with No. 4
Distingue Traces
This is a very good idea. Hopefully she’ll get a couple of other gay celebrities on the bus.
michael
First of all, do come to Canada, your equal here and your money goes far. There are so many rocking places here to go, Vancouver,
Whistler, Montreal. Spend your money and make friends with a place that honors you. Invest in Canada, we did not have the stupid banking practices the U.S. has had so we are not seeing those issues. I moved to Canada over 3 years ago and I love it.
People here are calm, level headed and well, religious nut cases are just seen as that, religious nut cases. People don’t allow them to control their lives here. Also, Vancouver is so full of pretty men. Montreal is full of sexy French Canadians and theres a lot of diversity here and its celebrated. Do everything you can to stop giving your hard earned money to a place that hates your guts. Come for a visit, you might just like it here.
Him too
Armistaud Maupin blames the “lesbian” commercials that looked like “tampon commercials”.
Wolf is right. Dumb dykes.
CHURCHILL-Y
What happened to good Old America Michael?
Don’t tell me you didn’t come down to vote for Obama!
No! not after all the gibberish you posted here about how great he was and how more advanced we GLBT’s were gonna be left if we elected him.
I thought you also said you enjoyed the company of blacks, well now 70% of them voted against us in CA so come on down Michael descend from BC to live amongst them.
Charles Merrill
No we won’t go to jail. I have witheld taxes since 2004. We will change the laws with our tax protest. Good for Etheridge. I knew she would come on board. Ellen will be the next then everyone. Get the government in their pocketbook, especially when the economy is imploding. Bring it on.
Rigato
In Barack’s defense, Churchhill-y he just got elected. He had nothing to do with Proposition Eight. I wouldn’t expect him to vouch for us either…the American people is already waiting with baited breath for him to bail us out…why give them an excuse to tar and feather him before he’s even sworn in?
Though I do concede one point…the blacks should be SYMPATHIZING with us, god damn it. They were oppressed one time too! Shit, gays are the blacks of the 21st century, and they don’t seem to realize that. Instead, theyre laughing at us as they drop their ballots in.
So the oppressed have become the oppressors. Thanks black CA voters, for being the gigantic dicks that you are right now.
Silence Equals Presidency

How about a list of the things Obama said to promote No on 8?
How about Pelosi?

Okay. I’m done with this site. Churchill-y should be banned from this place purely for his racist comments. Email me when this place allows registered comments ONLY (with consideration for banning intolerable trolls.) Until that time, I’m removing my bookmark…I can get my gay news elsewhere!
Nitesurf
It does reflect poorly on this site that they allow blatant racists to spew their hatred here on a daily basis.

I agree 30 and 31
, but blame Churchill-y
theo
Okay, I get the anger, but it’s misdirected, folks.
This isn’t the State of California’s fault. In fact, judges employed by the State of California granted you the right to marry.
It was taken away by your neighbor, your co-worker, that dickhead in the BMW who cut you off last week who showed up at the polls and voted.
Your anger needs to be directed at the 52% of Californians who voted to revoke your rights, not at the state government.
I’m all for marching and being pissed off at ‘The Man,’ but y’all have fingered the wrong man for this slight.
Charles Merrill
The graphics keep this blog alive. The bloggers have settled into a community of bitches. Vist pamshouseblend.com or signorile.com for intelligent blogging. Going on here is like entering a sleaze bar.
Kdogg
I for one am all in! I’m sick of all this bulls*it, when will GLBT wake up. Civil rights weren’t handed to any minority group through elections. We need sit ins at any agency that supports anti-gay proposals, we need marches that disrupt the lives of others like these voters disrupt ours, and we need to not shut up until America leaves us the hell alone!!
Kevin F
We have been too subservient for too long. Civil rights belong to everyone. This is a non-violent protest and completely right at its core. If you are not treated as a full citizen with full rights why must you pay full taxes? It’s time. America is no longer listening. Too slowly this is coming. Blacks were not afraid to be hosed down in the streets, jailed, and acid thrown in pools, why are we homosexuals so scared of a few days in jail. We must support each other and the rest will follow. Stand up against those that hate and respect those that are with us. Stand with each other. Non-violence can be powerful but it can still be costly. Too much fear has cost us too much time. We are only asking for equal treatment.
bobito
Kevin – I do agree that civil disobedience has been an effective method for getting things changed, but in answer to your question of “why are we homosexuals so scared of a few days in jail”, I think it should be taken into consideration that inmates are not very sympathetically inclined toward homosexuals in jails, where sex is used as a weapon in a power struggle.
Although Churchill-y would dearly love for us all to believe that a McCain victory would have resulted in Prop 8’s defeat – there is no indication that McCain’s supporters voted heavily against the proposition. Obama’s Presidency means the White House will no longer have an open, welcoming ear for all the hateful anti-gay invective screeched by the religious right.
Lawrence
Move to Canada!!!! 😀 We have been with it for yeaRS NOW Happily married gay couples cross the country for the last two years 😀 it wasnt even up to a vote here .. Our gov is smart enough to realize that its a human rights issue and is not to be decided by a vote its a right for everyone to be equal… Move to Canada the TRUE land of the free
John O'Malley
Unfortunately, this issue is nothing like a race issue and it cannot be compared because while you do not choose to be gay, you certainly can choose how much you display in a public setting. Blacks could and still cannot do that thus making the discrimination against them a completely different issue.
I completely agree with Melissa and it would be interesting to see if Californian’s that were against Prop 8 did protest by not paying taxes. The only tricky part is when idiots decide to pretend to be gay to avoid it as well, weakening the cause.
John Bisceglia
To all who may not agree with TAX PROTEST – I’ve been refusing to file taxes since 2005, but you may not understand the motivation behind my own tax protest (and you’re not alone).
Only when YOUR family & children have experienced REAL harm from discrimination, the kind that devastates your financial security, traumatizes your children, and destroys your psychological health and ability to work, only then will you comprehend how you would NOT give a rat’s patootie about any perceived “good image” concerning your tax protest. You’d likely react as many of us have and simply refuse to comply IN ANY WAY with the powers that discriminate and harm your family (and these powers do it for no rational, CIVIL reason).
This IS a way to live by my own morals and self-respect and not sanction this outrageous legal inequity. Does ANYONE care that children and families and communities are harmed by marriage inequality?
Well, my tax protest is NOT about holding my breath until I get my way; it is about a complete refusal to submit to my government’s inhuman treatment of myself and all other LGBT families while simultaneously taxing our income.
This is NOT a quibble about property taxes, or being anti-war, or having any issue with a particular government POLICY. It is about the across-the-board immoral discrimination against MY FAMILY – OUR FAMILY & CHILDREN – something which many suggest is the PILLAR OF CIVILIZATION ITSELF.
“Well, except for the gays;
their families and children DO NOT COUNT.”
– the reality of DOMA
America – LOOK YOURSELVES IN THE FACE.
YOU ALLOW THIS LEGAL INJUSTICE TO CONTINUE.
YOU ARE SILENT.
YOU THINK YOU ARE NOT AFFECTED.
ALL WHILE WE SUFFER.
If you believe in the interdependence of ALL life (and if you do not you scare me), then this inhuman and inhumane treatment affects ALL, since every LGBTIQ-XYZ is linked to a heterosexual somewhere on this planet. FAMILY. FAMILY. FAMILY.
I am still waiting for heterosexuals to justify why we should pay the same taxes for less civil rights.
tuna
@daniel kemp: to jail with you all,of course, you might enjoy whats in jail,,,,,,,lol . has anyone ever seen two male racoons holding hands in the woods? i never have? has anyone ever seen two female dogs try to have puppies? nope, not going to happen! ever wonder why GOD had moses bring a female and a male of every spieces on the ark?? marriage is for pro creation,,,,,DUH!!! just think if he gathered up all females instead…who would pay the taxes……bahahahahah
tuna
you pay the same taxes, becAUse you have the same rights. you can all get married! marrigae is between a man and a woman….END OF STROY!!!
michael
I tell you all, move to Canada, people are sane here. America has gone completely mad and is full of evil people. Its going down the tubes and everyone in the world knows that, and knows it needs to. It does nothing but bring harm to the planet. Leave, bring your money, your educations and your talents to a country that
wants to see you flourish and contribute to there better way of life.
My HUSBAND and I 4 years ago and its the best decision I ever made in my life. America is a hell hole!
tommy
So , we lost prop 8 in Ca, because the mormons stepped over the separation of church and state, spent millions in decisive ads and became a political group all to themselves. With that they MUST loose their tax exempt status. Here is a link to file a formal charge with the IRS if you feel compelled, I would appreciate it. It is time to keep religion out of politics.
The choice is yours …. are you comfortable with these zealots controlling elections? I’m not! We must maintain the separation.

Melissa, Ellen, T.R. Knight, any and all of your second class Californians, please… come to Massachusetts where you really are free to live your life as you want. Also.. we could use the extra tax base!
Alexa
@tuna:
Absolutely true, we can indeed get married. But not to someone we love, which is, after all, the point of marriage. Or do you believe in arranged and/or loveless marriages for everyone?
Andrew
Nice column, Melissa, but where have you been in the last two days of LA protests? There are plenty more this weekend, please grace us with your presence.
Kdogg
@tuna: In fact there are homosexual animals of many many species, so please get your facts checked before looking stupid again. Also I’ve never seen a male and femal racoon holding hands so I fail to see the sense behind that comment either. Finally since marriage is for pro-creation, unfortunately we will need to disolve all marriages between man and woman who have reached an age where procreation can no longer occur, also if either husband or wife are sterile and cannot reproduce there will be government worker that will come to your door and revoke your marriage certificate….
So now that we are moving beyond silly arguments against gay marriage I think the no taxes idea is a bit silly and we should start protesting, marching, sitting in on Morman’s Churches, Focus on Family establishments, Marriots, places of hate, and stop sitting around complaining about what rights ignorant majorities won’t vote in for us.
frank kameny
Tommy,
You’re another nitwit who does not truly understand what the “separation of church and state” means. And oh by the way, that phrase is not in the Constitution. This is not a “separation” issue, no matter how much people like you piss and moan.
Second, you obviously also have no understanding of 501(c)(3). There is nothing the Mormon Church or Knights Of Columbus did that comes even remotely close to threatening their tax-exempt status.
But keep bitching and saying the same things over and over…it’s pretty funny.
Rob Moore
@theo: I agree. I won’t buy agricultural products from California since the agricultural parts of the state gave the strongest support. I do wish there was some way to target San Diego, San Bernadino, and other cities that voted to reserve certain rights for heterosexual people only. I wonder how all the Loggerhead Republicans in San Diego are liking the way things are going.
frank kameny
Kdogg,
Yes, by all means, go protest and otherwise harass various churches and establishments. It’s a great idea.
But since so many here are pissed at black people for voting in droves for Prop 8, why don’t you also go sit in and protest at some of the churches in, say, Oakland and Compton that supported 8…don’t they deserve to know how you “feel”?
That’s what I thought.
frank kameny
A tax protest is a wonderful idea! Sheer genius. The IRS will be very understanding of your plight.
seitan-on-a-stick

There’s a legal and relatively painless way to do what Melissa is encouraging. Sell your house and move out of California. There are plenty of non-hatin’ states like Massachusetts and Connecticut where the taxes are lower and the economy is better.
Why any LGBT person would want to live in Calabama, with its soaring taxes, crime, earthquakes, high cost of living, and sinking economy — along with legalized discrimination — is beyond me.
If you’re pissed off, vote with your feet and your wallet and leave. If California comes to the feds demanding a bailout as its economy sinks, I promise you many of the rest of us will ask why the rest of the country should pay for California’s stupidity when it chased so many residents and businesses out.
Brian Miller
Please ignore the “Frank Kameny” troll. Trolls die when they are ignored. Thanks!
Kdogg
@frank kameny: I tried to make my comment show that i want all places of hate to be visited. I mean very non-violent but I think we should be paying these establishments protest visits. Even the black churches that have spread hate, but not limited to black churches. Many white, hispanic, etc places of worship stand against gays too.
I think these protests should also be done in a non-harrassing way. More that our presence be known, that people actually meet gay people and face this irrational fear. We need to be active! We need to change the hearts of the people! We need to do it together!
bigtuna
right on!!
go protest in east LA, lets see how bad they would like to help your silly little a s s !!! take a pack of matches with ya, show dem boys how bad you is..bahahhahahaha!!! melissa, you might want to call willie nelson before you start your tax protest. he figured he also had the BALLS to beat the IRS, one problem, theres were bigger….LMAO at you gay folks…name a gay homosexual animal, KDOGG, thats news to me!!! mikey jackson does NOT count.

Stop paying taxes! Their is no such thing as debtors prison anymore. Class action lawsuit against the state of CA for taxation without representation. Tie it up in court. People feel their wallets long before they feel their conscience. We have the economy to thank for Obama.
1 million signitures to put a measure on the ballot. Let’s litter it with religiously bigoted measures that forces them to use their resources.
Amend the constitution to require 2/3 majority in order to amend it. Our founding fathers were smart enough to realize people can’t be trusted that’s why they made the federal one so difficult to amend!
Remove tax free status for churches that make contributions to legislation as well as political candidates. The second they contribute to ANYTHING political they have crossed the line of separation of church and state and CA can make up some of the money it’s losing from the gay community.
Those yellow nazi signs everywhere. Make it illegal to place any political sign on public property. Anyone has the right to remove it just like litter.
On and On. You can think up some too…..it’s fun.
second and third marriages should be illegal.
749………That’s the number of rights that were taken away. Domestic Partner and Civil Unions only have 300 rights, none of which cross state lines. Marriage has 1049 rights. Don’t let them argue that it’s about a word anymore either.
bigtuna
KDOGG, racoons are nocturnal, of course you have never seen them holding hands. i’ll bet if you go to pier 51 you’ll see girls holding hands…..don’t ever call me stupid again, or,,oR,,,,(((OR)))

Kdogg
@bigtuna: BigTuna… your sounding pretty stupid right now!
I have to wonder why you find it so important to convince the world, including yourself that “Gay is wrong.” You care so much that you are posting on a blog called http://www.queerty.com. The only thing I can come up with is that you are fighting a same-sex attraction yourself.
If you have never heard this from anyone it may be hard to hear but God does not hate you. In fact studies show that he created you this way. You do not have to hate yourself for this attraction that you never asked for. God loves you, we will love and accept you, and in fact the people that actually care about you will love and accept you this way too. I am sorry your upbring has taught you differently.
bigtuna

@bigtuna: If I had a dollar for ever “straight married man” that tried to have sex with me I would be extremely rich. Whatever it is that makes you feel the need and ability to empathize with gays so much that you talk to us on our turf explaining how “WRONG” gay is most likely means you have same sex attractions. Like I said, God loves you, we will accept you, and so will the people in your life that truly care for you, including your wife. Now since you are 40 years old I suggest finding a hobby or coming out of the closet.

KDOGG, READ THE HORRORS YOU…”If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.”
Such an act was regarded as an “abomination” for several reasons. The Hebrew prescientific understanding was that male semen contained the whole of nascent life. With no knowledge of eggs and ovulation, it was assumed that the woman provided only the incubating space. Hence the spilling of semen for any nonprocreative purpose–in coitus interruptus (Gen. 38:1-11), male homosexual acts, or male masturbation–was considered tantamount to abortion or murder. (Female homosexual acts were consequently not so seriously regarded, and are not mentioned at all in the Old Testament (but see Rom. 1:26). One can appreciate how a tribe struggling to populate a country in which its people were outnumbered would value procreation highly, but such values are rendered questionable in a world facing uncontrolled overpopulation.
In addition, when a man acted like a woman sexually, male dignity was compromised. It was a degradation, not only in regard to himself, but for every other male. The patriarchalism of Hebrew culture shows its hand in the very formulation of the commandment, since no similar stricture was formulated to forbid homosexual acts between females. And the repugnance felt toward homosexuality was not just that it was deemed unnatural but also that it was considered unJewish, representing yet one more incursion of pagan civilization into Jewish life. On top of that is the more universal repugnance heterosexuals tend to feel for acts and orientations foreign to them.

@Silence Equals Presidency: While I do agree with you that it would have been nice to hear from Obama and Pelosi before the election, you have to remember two things. One, Pelosi was undergoing a re-election campaign and state laws bar her from voicing an opinion on any specific ballot initiative during a re-election campaign. She did donate $10,000 from her campaign to No on 8. Not great, but she was under restrictions.
As for Obama, I totally agree with his decision. It hurts me, as a gay American, but you have to understand what was at stake. Obama would have been foolish to come out strong against Prop8 and create his own October surprise. Imagine if he got a backlash from bigots. What if the climate for tolerance in this country were misunderstood and he lost a ton of moderate swing voters. The polls were close and he couldn’t afford to lose. Ideally he would have spoke up and tried to stop Prop8, but I think that the future of gay rights in this country is much better having Obama in office than McCain. Period. Prop8 or no Prop8, the LGBT community could not afford a McCain/Palin administration.

You know, the religious people out there (I’m talking about you, Mormans!) use the “sanctity of marriage” defense over and over until they’ve beaten it over the head of everyone. If that REALLY is the case – if this isn’t about the fact that they just plain hate gay people, if this isn’t just about the fact that they think that gay people aren’t just sick and perverted, if this isn’t just about their skewed religious views – then why don’t they deny the right to RE-marry to heterosexual people who have gotten a divorce? Think about it…who in this world has tainted the sanctity of marriage more than the large percentage of people who have given it a try, failed and then gone to a lawyer for a divorce? Is that really sanctity of marriage?
Apparently 51% of the California voters still believe that being gay is a choice – and an abhorrent one at that. “Sure, you have the right to marry – someone of the opposite sex!” I’ve heard that so much. The problem is, gay people don’t fall in love with members of the opposite sex. Do heterosexual people CHOOSE to fall in love with members of the opposite sex? Of course not. Falling in love has never been something you can control. If it was, then people wouldn’t be tongue-tied and nervous when they were around someone they found attractive.
Back in the late 1700’s the people of America HAD made a choice – a choice to come to a new land and make new lives. However, though they were paying taxes to Merry ol’ England, they found that they weren’t given the same rights as those people who decided to stay back in England.
Melissa Etheridge has had enough and this is her way of throwing the tea into the harbor, so to speak. Every July 4th we celebrate the decision that a group of people made to stand up for their rights and declare that being treated as second-class citizens is wrong! But now, when a group of people who can no more choose who they fall in love with any more than they can choose how tall they are stands up for their rights, they are critiqued, shamed and hated.
I long for the day when this changes.
Kimberly Floremsheim
Yes God does love gays because he loves all of his creations. However God does not condone gay or lesbian lifestyle. It’s in the bible. You idiots just choose to ignore so you can justify your damned crazy lifestyle. I think your lifestyle is one of choosing and not one God gave you. He does love you because you are a person he created.
The people have voted…get over it!!! Do you think people would be behaving as your are if Propostion 8 failed. Hell NO! The fact here is that gays and lesbians have no class they act like fools when things don’t go your way. Don’t want any special treatment eh…what about your stupid gay parade? Hetereos don’t go around parading about their sexuality why must you idiots?
Kimberly Floremsheim
Gees Melissa thought you had more class and smarts than you are displaying by stating you will be withholding your taxes. Go ahead do what ever you feel is right but in the long run you will just look foolish. If everytime I disagreed with the way the voters voted and it didn’t turn out the way I wanted and I tried to go against the flow I too would look as foolish as you are about to. Grow up….everything in life isn’t fair. If you don’t like the results of the election do something about it but show some class in doing it and more people will respect you for your actions that way as opposed to your proposed way of doing things now! Really Melissa grow up!
