The military says it’s deferring to President Obama on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Obama says he wants legislators to repeal it. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid now says there are no backers in the U.S. Senate, but if the House wants to take it up, he’d be more than happy to do something on his end. And what’s the House have to say? You can imagine where this daisy change of inaction is headed.

Queerty actually came up with an appropriate headline this time.
Even though polls show public support for allowing gays in the military (although I haven’t seen data stating they want it to happen immediately), politicians don’t want to take the risk of being the first to advocate on this issue.
If LGBTs and our organizations decide this is THE issue to prioritize out of political expediency (I’m still not sure how much support this has among the general LGBT community), we should withhold support from all politicians to send a message.

I use to live in Nevada. Trust me, Reid’s “Sell By” date expired about 20 years ago. Technically, old Harry may run the Senate but he is totally useless and may well not survive a Republican 2010 senate challenge in Nevada. I don’t relish the thought of losing a Democratic senate seat but the opposition wouldn’t cause us any more problems than Reid already does. Time for him to dust off the rocking chair in Searchlight, NV and retire. In the meantime, keep the heat on Congress & Obama. HRC’s letter to the WH combined with last night’s Howard Dean appearance on Maddow and this morning’s NYT editorial may get things fired up. I hope San Francisco Pride has lots of political signs & banners on parade as a reminder to Pelosi that she’s not above the fray.

@shelby: DADT was not exactly what Clinton wanted, but it was as far as he was able to get. People seem to think that DADT started the policy of removing gays from the military. Before DADT, the military could probe your personal life to find out if you were gay and kick you out for it even if you were in the closet. Clinton didn’t fully back DOMA, he just understood what was going to happen if DOMA didn’t pass at the time. If DOMA didn’t pass there was no way there wouldn’t have been a push for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, and unlike the two that came later, at that point in history if all 49 states, other than MA, were forced to recognize gay marriage that amendment would have passed.
