On a recent episode of The Graham Norton Show, Scottish dreamboat Ewan McGregor discussed shooting a graphic gay sex scene with Hollywood bad boy Christian Bale in Todd Haynes’ 1998 glam-rock epic, Velvet Goldmine. But unlike other actors, who moan about being uncomfortable or equate a same-sex smooch to kissing their dog, the eminently gay-friendly (and often clothing-averse) McGregor admitted he enjoyed shagging his comely co-star. (McGregor begins his anecdote at about 29:27)
“I did have a sex scene with Christian Bale, which I did to the best of my ability. C’mon, it was great! I was playing an Iggy Pop-type rock star and we have a shag on top of a rooftop in Kings Cross but they wanted to shoot it from another rooftop. We heard, ‘Action!’ so we started to slowly [go at it]. Then it went on and on—we were really going at it…with a reach-around. [Laughs]. Then I thought, I would have cum by now so I went round to Christian’s ear and went, ‘I think I would have cum by now. I’m going to have a look.’ I looked over and they were packing up the cameras! I think they thought it was a sensitive thing, they should just leave it to us.”
Sharing the couch with Bridesmaids‘ Chris O’Dowd, McGregor was on the show to promote his new movie, Beginners, in which he plays a middle-aged photographer whose father comes out of the closet at age 75.
Oh Ewan, you just can’t stay away from us, can you?

You know the gay community are the ONLY people that give Hal Sparks a job. And he said kissing a man was like kissing a dog.
Oh. Kay.
Gays are so self loathing. And GLAAD is trying to pretend it was worthwhile before Barrios got sacked. Please, it was better after he came on board, although he was far too political having worked in politics before.
GLAAD is really the worst thing ever known to man.

@Oh Dear (John From England): What does this have to do with Ewan McGregor?
Jakey
@Oh Dear (John From England): I don’t know what Hal Sparks has to do with this article either, but since it clearly bothers you so much I’m happy to say your disgust is misplaced. Here’s what Sparks had to say about that:
“I said something that was construed as being negative when I was trying to be purely descriptive. Somebody asked me what it was like to kiss a guy. Keep in mind that at this point I had not kissed a gay man–I had kissed Gale Harold and another guy. Two straight guys. So if you think I’m referring to kissing gay men as like kissing a dog, then you’re wrong on that count, and let’s start there.
“Secondly, the point I was trying to make was, have you ever seen somebody who has a dog and they love their dog? They have so much emotional connection to that dog and they kiss it right on the face–right on the mouth. And they can conjure up all this emotion about how much they really care about this animal, but they don’t want to fuck it. That’s what playing a gay man and kissing other men is like. As much as I can conjure up the emotion of caring and love and support, I don’t want to fuck them.”
So rest easy. It was a situation with love and affection and without sexual attraction, is all he meant. Poor choice of words, I agree, but he was hardly expressing disgust.

Graham Norton isn’t a gay chat show, it’s pretty much the main mainstream chatshow of the UK, Graham Norton took over from Jonathan Ross. I guess my point is that just because Graham is gay, doesn’t make it a gay show first, just how Rachel Maddow’s show might cover more/cover better gay issues than other punditry shows, but it isn’t a gay news show in the way that this is a gay news site. =] Graham’s show did used to be super gay back in the day though to be fair.

So amazing what a great film!!

Graham’s show is still quite gay — whenever the occasion arises. Just the other night he was mentiong re the film “Begingers” that it’s highly unlikely for an older gay man (even one as lovely as Christopher Plummer) to bag a boyfriend as luscious as Goran Visnic — “They’re WAY at the other end of the bar!”

@David Ehrenstein: Yes it probably is still fairly gay sometimes compared to other shows, I just thought it was weird to classify is as a ‘gay chat show’ because it is not specifically gay, and sometimes not gay at all. Like he can say what you said he did in a way a straight guy couldn’t, but I don’t think his guests are gayer than say Jonathan Ross’ and he actually flirts with guys a lot less than Ross did!
Anyways, I was just kinda clarifying in case people didn’t know of the show and thought from queerty’s headline that it was an actual gay talk show. Not really that important I guess, I just see it like, if people (including gay people) categorise everything hosted by someone gay as a ‘gay show’, then… I don’t know how to explain. That just doesn’t seem a good thing to me. It is a part of a person, and not everything they do. Kinda like Liz Feldman’s gay marriage quote. =]
