“I think I can be useful rather than wasting my time in a prison,” 42-year-old Guy Turcotte (pictured) told a judge on Thursday.
Turcotte is a former Quebec cardiologist. He is facing double-murder charges for killing his two children. Three years ago, he admitted in court to stabbing his five-year-old son and three-year-old daughter a total of 46 times in their family home in February 2009. He claimed the murders were fueled by depression over his wife’s infidelity and his own addiction to gay porn.
Turcotte was originally put on trail in 2011. Despite the confession, a jury voted not to convict him, resulting in widespread outrage across Canada. A year later, that verdict was struck down on appeal. He was again arrested and has been held in a local jail.
He appeared before a judge yesterday begging to be released on bail, saying the other inmates were mean to him and that he would prefer to stay at his uncle’s house until his second double-murder trial. He claims he is not a threat to society.

“[During my release] I often went out in public places and I never had problems,” Turcotte explained.
Then he added, almost as an afterthought, “Except for one time in a shopping center.”
He recounted an incident when a woman recognized him at a mall and “became aggressive.”
Two psychiatrists testified that Turcotte was taking double the normal dose of anti-depressants and was not a danger to society.
“He feels that he is ready and able to be free, pending his new trial, because he has this support system in place to keep him stable,” said one of the psychiatrists.
His wife, Dr. Isabelle Gaston, who worked at the same hospital as Turcotte, begs to differ. She insists her husband is still dangerous.
Turcotte’s new trial is scheduled to begin in September 2015.

My 13 year old grandson was caught in the girls locker room 2x. He was expelled from school, arrested, my daughter home was searched, they found some pictures. They took all the computer, tablets, Iphones. Any and everything, connected to electronics. They arrested him, put him in juvenile detention until they had an opening at a youth home. It’s been 2 years now. He is just now allowed home visits. My point and I do have one. If they did this to a Nerdy 13 year-old. This guy deserves to be on death row somewhere. I like when he says, he is wasting his time in jail. He had many opportunities to get things under control before the murders. If he was given the wrong medication, for example, there could be room for debate as to the degree of his responsibility. @BadSeed: Canadian law allows an appeal of an acquittal if there were an error of law at the trial level. Its double jeopardy protection is not as stringent as the US’s.

What Qweerty didn’t report, and should have to give the story more context, was that the murderer was involved in a very bitter divorce from his wife. The custody and access to the children was a central part of their dispute. Although his desire to get back at his wife through harming his children would never be accepted as an excuse for his horrible murders, it does go a long way to explain what he did. The gay porn element does not do that at all and was never even mentioned at the original trial. Qweerty dropped the ball yet again, focusing on a gay angle that doesn’t even exist. And as for how Canada fares when compared to the US, our murder rate is less than a third of yours. You people try children under 12 for crimes and glorify execution (state-organized murder). I had the privilege of living in Vancouver, B.C. for 7 years. When we first moved there they had just finished a murder trail where several men, 2 were over 18 the rest under 18 decided to go out to Stanley Park, find a gay guy and beat him to death. They filled their car with sports equiptment, found someone and did would they set out to do. The two men over 18 got something like three years in prison. The teenagers got house arrest meaning they basically sat home and played video games until they became adults. There names were also never released to the public. After all of them had served their sentences a reporter hunted down a few of them including at least one of the minors. None of them had any regret for what they did. One of the adults was pissed off because he found it unfair that he had to go to prison while the minors got to stay at home. Canada falls does fall down when it comes to these things and I don’t give a damned about their murder rates. I love Canada and most of the ways it does things it does better but this isn’t one of them.

So maybe they didn’t convict him because of mental illness- I personally think that if you kill another person, especially your own children- you are mentally ill. They can treat it like a disease, but the guy still shouldn’t be out in society if he ever made the judgement call that in a divorce what he needed to do to get ahead was STAB HIS CHILDREN.
Maybe if he wants to be “useful” and try to pay any restitution he could have some administrative paper pusher type job in medical research, but even that is pushing it since this guy is obviously very severely mentally ill. Not saying all people with mental illness are useless, but when is someone so bad they STAB THEIR OWN CHILDREN they are probably not going to be the most reliable employees……

A murder rate is based per capita, that is, how many per say 100,000 people.
