Best known as the screenwriter of the John Greyson ’90s gay classic Lilies and the more recent Xavier Dolan hit Tom at the Farm, gay French Canadian playwright Michel Marc Bouchard’s latest adventure in screenwriting is the international co-production about Queen Kristina of Sweden, the wonderfully titled, The Girl King.
In this exclusive clip from the film, Queen Kristina (played by the very handsome Swedish actress Malin Buska) receives from her chancellor (played by Michael Nyqvist, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) a document sent to her from the French philosopher Descartes, and then shares it with her lover, the Countess Ebba Sparre (played by the stunning Sarah Gadon, A Royal Night Out).
Descartes’s prescient sentiment beautifully underscores the overarching theme of Bouchard’s screenplay:
“To attain the truth in life, we must discard all the ideas we’ve been taught.”
The Girl King is out now on DVD and digital via iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Xbox, Vudu and WolfeOnDemand.com.

Looks like a stunner. Lilies is one of my favorite movies, beautifully acted and shot, and so tragic.

Very original work it promotes a unique leader with the rarest and most beautiful values for her time, the film was very dramatic and was emotionally strong for me and it is most importantly very instructive about Sweeden’s history, who would’ve known that they had such a glorious and fabulous queen?! I wonder if she was as real as she was portrayed.
I am very glad I watched this film.
