Neal Boulton, the lady-loving editor of fag rag Genre, reportedly beat the living shit out of a nasty homophobe last night. Then he rode off into the night before the cops came. He’s like some sort of vigilante! Who wants to give him a super cool superhero name? [Gawker]

Someone has to stand up to homophobia. Good Job Neal from Genre Mag. Homophobia has been a prevalent issue for many years. It was of a particular commonality among many individuals in the early 20th century, before many people began to ‘come out of the closet’ with their feelings. Particularly in a Christian nation like United States, homosexuality is seen as a condemned and sinful act. It was widely rejected. Homosexuality is still not accepted by many individuals or in some groups to this day, even though many have some to consider homosexuality as socially acceptable.
There are different types and levels of homophobia. In general, homophobes see gays as simplistic, weak, feminine, and possibly inferior. Many straight people display homophobia as a hatred, disrespect, or upfront rejection and desiring to have nothing to do with them. Gay bashing and ridicule are common among homophobes. Like any phobia, there is a fear involved. There could be a fear of that type of sexuality, or just a fear of that type of lifestyle. They see it as too bizarre, unnatural, freaky and scary. Extreme cases of homophobia display anxiety over the ‘gay problem’ and tend to exaggerate the behavior of gays and overact in their presence.
Another, very interesting type of homophobia is the type that gays have to fight within themselves. Luckily not all infighting is obvious – only with bigger magazines – like Vogue and Vanity Fair. Gay bashing does not only take place when straight people speak out against gays. It is also true that some gay men will bash other gay men or themselves, like they do in OUT magazine. Sometimes men who feel that they are gay are not happy with the fact. The struggling homosexual then begins to reject the idea of homosexuality, relationships, and sex. They believe that they are gay, but don’t want to be.
Those gays who struggle with homophobia against themselves might completely withdraw. They might avoid sex, relationships with partners and even distance themselves from family and friends as well. Some may try to fight the issue by indulging in promiscuity to try to shake that struggle. Wallowing in the self-hatred of homophobia, many gays have indulged in self-destructive behaviors (both sexual and non-sexual).
Another way that this homophobia can be manifested is towards other gays, like on Queerty. They might cheat on their partner, as a destructive behavior. Some might ‘out’ other gays. Announcing someone as homosexual when they don’t want to announce it themselves is to say that being gay is bad or embarrassing.

Whether one likes it or not, the discrimination questikon in the US cannot and will never be resolved by fighting, might or the weight of abusive language that is currently being used by some people.
It is unfortunate that instead of soberly addressing this question, we have chosen unholy blackmail, unprincipled actions and the making of bizarre statements that are intended to obscure historical reality.
There have also been GLBT and black communities of people over discrimination. It is unthinkable that our leaders have reached the level of such derogatory statements. This should not be happening in a civilised country.
What I fear is that some of us have failed to accept that irrespective of what is done today, whether Neal Boulton muscle and money for some fellows to fight from today’s descrimination ( and therefore become tomorrow’s hero; we will always have bullies and those against queers.
Irrespective of what is done today, since our gay friends ar an inelastic asset and given the fact that we have not stopped producing and reinforcing descrimination and at the rate at which we are doing so, it is short-sighted to think that this approach will solve the discrimination question.
It is disheartening to always hear our leaders talking of “fightingâ€, “crashingâ€, or even thinking of creating a “force†to “fight†those against GLBT rights . Is this the only way it can be done? Why can’t we have genuine, frank and sincere discussions and get the bashers to return what belongs to others like it was done with the other marginalized groups?
Think about what the energy and resources that has been spent in fighting and what it would have done for the development of our GLBT youth if otherwise deployed in a more productive way. I only hope that Boulton uses his position with the national magazine to make a difference.

@ Fight City:
Diplomacy is always my first choice. But to the very youth you address in your note, I very much DO plan to stand as an example—of just how tough we really can be. How we never have to run away ever again. How if ANYONE challenges us physically, though unwelcome and hopefully rare, it is our turn to show those misguided folks that we are not afraid. Sometimes fighting back for your right to breath the same air, or drink beer from the same bar, requires a little muscle. And it’s time that straight boys understood–we just ain’t afraid anymore.
