California’s State Assembly Speaker-elect John Pérez is about to get some gay company from the other side of the country: Rhode Island State Rep. Gordon Fox, who is gay, claims to have more than enough votes to become the state’s new House speaker. Moreover, sitting House Speaker William Murphy, who is stepping down Thursday, backs Fox. UPDATE: It’s a done deal with 51; Fox is the speaker, also becoming the state’s first black person to hold the position.
