The ’70s made many memorable contributions to culture, from Thin White Duke Bowie to The Godfather to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
But interior decorating does not often bubble onto anyone’s list of the decade’s biggest achievements.
Signature busy patterns accented by drab earth tones and saturated tints stand in total opposition to today’s more minimalist approach (though wood has certainly made a comeback), and nowhere is that more apparent than in this Palm Springs time capsule currently on the market.
Feast your eyes on 2055 S Joshua Tree Place, a three-bedroom masterpiece of shag, crushed velvet and mirrors that some gay man simply must purchase, if for no other reason than to throw an unforgettable party.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Everything looks normal enough from the outside:
But one step through the door and the time warp is in full swing:
Thank god the dining room keeps with the forest green/puke theme:
A bit too overwhelming? Take a rest in the relaxing master bedroom if you must:
Every master suite has to have an equally impressive bathroom:
And just think of the entertaining you could do in the appropriately wood-paneled bar and lounge:
So who’s going to fork over the $850k and send out invitations?

SO BAD IT’S GOOD!
Saw this last week on SFGate, which fleshed out the story of the house and its deliberate preservation (aside from the kitchen) by successive owners.
I’d have gone ivory and gold instead of green and white in the LR and DR.
If you’re into this look, pay a visit to The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Oh my god my lovelys I love it. Though I would turn the green dinning room pink.

@Sand Nierenberg: This is the set for Boogie Nights.

The garish colors and decor reminds me of the many homes I visited during my childhood. I’ve never seen this style so perfected. I’m fascinated by unearthed apartments and homes from a past era that are well preserved when discovered.

I remember when a house like this made yours the coolest house on the block. I wasn’t a fan of the style then and I’m not now, but I was also never fond of the ridiculously uncomfortable Swedish Modern style that this style replaced.
As for the first photo, unless it’s a matter of photo quality or computer resolution, that is NOT “forest green.” It’s closer to Kelly green. You can’t be casual or flippant about color when addressing gay people. 😉

I wasn’t born with the gay interior design gene so it looks good to me

@Glücklich: I was going to mention that this place looks like a honeymoon hotel. The bed should be on a turntable.
Unfortunately, looking at this place makes me want to sneeze and, unless you don’t mind an extensive air conditioning bill, this place looks particularly hot for Palm Springs.

My mother taught me to be nice even to people I didn’t like. I’ve been queer for close to 40 years but I’ve never seen anything this horrendously bad since I saw shot of Liberace’s home in Behind the Candelabra where Matt Damon lessened the impact of his atrocity. What was he thinking? If he thought that decor would hide his queeniness he’s badly mistaken

@Bauhaus:
Same here on time-capsule places.
As you know the real estate market out here in SF is INSANE and I am kinda sorta looking. I’m actually disappointed when a house has been staged to the hilt (they always are out here and it isn’t cheap to do).
I don’t want to see a hoard but I *do* want to see worn carpets, nicotine-stained ceilings, chipped tiles, Nana’s oxygen tank in the corner, etc. To me, part of the appeal of a house is its history no matter how mundane. Unlike the assholes on those house-hunter shows, I have some imagination and know the house won’t fall down if the carpet’s torn out or the hallway repainted.
$850K’s a bargain by SF standards. For a 1-BR TIC. Across from a freeway ramp in gang territory. Daily bum poop in the vestibule is included.

I love the look of this house!! If you also like and wish to see more pics, (48 total and unbelievable rooms, from a beautiful blue bedroom to a knock out pool area) go to SFGate and look for the article. I’ve seen the Paris apartment one before but it’s still eerie.
The one about Cefn Park is super cool. Those old cast iron ranges are amazing.
Reminds me of two books I read as a kid. Read ’em a few times actually:

Dirk Digler from Boogie Nights certainly slept there and had gay sex in all rooms.

I must say I am into modern design. This house looks atrocious. I am sorry but everything from the colors, to the carpeting and that downright awful bathroom just strengthen my opinion. This looks like a Trump house. Maybe he should buy it.
And did I see carpeting in the bathroom? Look I get the attempt to be retro, but that is a major hell no from me. Carpeting does not belong in the bathroom.
Atrocious, awkward and bulky. Those are the words I use to describe this train wreck.

@GC1985:
As Tim Gunn would say, “It’s a lot of look!”
If I were to go totally vernacular vintage décor, the 80’s dining room at the end of “Sixteen Candles” can’t be beat: glass-top table and beige-on-beige mural wallpaper? And c’mon, Thompson Twins AND 80’s Mike Schoeffling built into the room?

PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
Why do I get the feeling that the odor of poppers permeates thru every room in that house???? (:-p)
