Five (More) Fascinating Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Gay Sex

Sex is good. But let’s face it, gay sex is great.

So Queerty teamed up with our friends over at AdamMale’s online store to uncover five fascinating facts about homosexuality, and between the tens of thousands of reader comments, tweets, and Facebook shares, it became clear that this is a topic in which you–and the rest of the world–are very interested.

So without further ado, here are five more things you probably didn’t know about gay sex…

5. Every species does it

Much of the animals kingdom (queendom?) has been observed engaging in same sexual acts, including birds, beetles, bonobos, sheep, and fruit bats, to name just a few. Young male dolphins often go through a “phase” by hooking up with their male friends. And male Japanese macaques are known to engage in “penis fencing.” Scientists believe it may help them to establish lifelong friendship bonds.

4. Gay porn’s biggest fans live in some of the most intolerant states

A 2014 study found that the states with this highest percentages of same-sex porn viewers are located in the Deep South.

The state that ranks #1 in the most searches is Mississippi, holding a record of 5.58 percent. (Mississippi still has yet to remove its anti-sodomy law from its books, even after SCOTUS declared such laws unconstitutional more than a decade ago.) Louisiana came in close on its rear at 5.44 percent, followed by Georgia with 5.38 percent.

Go figure.

3. If a straight person bumps their head hard enough they can turn gay forever…

At least according to former guy’s guy/rugby player Chris Birch. About ten years ago he did a back flip, bumped his head, broke his neck, suffered a stroke, and “woke up gay.”

“It sounds strange, but when I came round I immediately felt different,” 26-year-old Birch told the Daily Mail back in 2011. “I wasn’t interested in women any more. I was definitely gay. I had never been attracted to a man before–I’d never even had any gay friends.”

As a result, he gave up rugby, became a hair dresser, started dating a 19-year-old, and participated in a BBC documentary called Totally Different Me in 2012.

2. Gentlemen prefer kissing (and BJs) to anal sex

Researchers at George Mason University and Indiana University conducted a sex study with nearly 25,000 gay and bisexual men. Participants were asked about their most recent same-sex encounters. 75 percent reported giving oral sex compared to 74 percent who reported receiving oral sex. 74.8 percent reported kissing on the mouth. But only about 35 percent reported having full-blown anal intercourse. The takeaway from the study? Apparently the question, “Are you a top or a bottom?” only matters one-third of the time.

1. One in 10 M4M Craigslist ads are looking for sex with straight men.

Last year, a team of researchers at Columbia University analyzed 300 M4M personal ads on Craigslist and discovered that roughly half of them were seeking “non-gay-identified” (NGI) sexual partners, a.k.a. hetero men.

Researchers also noticed that gay guys looking to hook up with “straight” guys were also more likely to be seeking bareback anal sex than guys looking to hook up with other gay gays.

“Future research on NGI-seeking men could lead to better understanding of their risk behaviors which, in turn, could be helpful for developing and targeting HIV/STD prevention and intervention efforts,” researchers concluded.
