We’re all for raising questions about gender and race representation in Roland Emmerich’s upcoming Stonewall film, but one unlikely voice has entered the debate with fast-flying accusations that don’t seem to accomplish anything but a sound resembling zing!
Mara Wilson, of ’90s children’s required viewing Mrs. Doubtfire and Matilda fame, fired off a series of tweets accusing Emmerich of personally twinkifying Stonewall because of his own proclivity towards young, white, fit gay men.

And look — we’ve never been shy of covering the L.A. A-gay pool parties that have been hosted by the likes of Emmerich and Bryan Singer, but Wilson’s comments still strike us as unnecessary.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Let’s talk about our queer history, let’s remember and praise those who’ve gotten us to where we are today, and by all means let’s criticize a Hollywood whitewashing.

But if we’re going to start going after every Hollywood director who appreciates youthful beauty, we’re going to be here a while.
Here’s what Mara had to say:
Has anyone told Roland Emmerich that Stonewall wasn’t one of the parties at his house exclusively for young, fit, white, gay men
— Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) August 11, 2015
Wasn’t a purse one of the first things thrown at Stonewall?
— Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) August 11, 2015
Go ahead and have your parties, but don’t try to alter history. — Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) August 11, 2015
It’s just sad. — Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) August 11, 2015
Emmerich has said it was the studios that made him change it, buuuuut somehow I’m not buying it. — Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) August 11, 2015
And then there was her affected surprise that anyone would cover her comments:
Kind of sad that my comments on Stonewall are considered news. — Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) August 12, 2015
Like, it’s great to be on tumblr, but on news blogs? — Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) August 12, 2015
I also feel a little weird, as a straight white person. — Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) August 12, 2015

Who the fuck cares what some homophobic, washed up straight girl who hasn’t even seen the movie thinks about it? Get a life.

I’d really like to hear what some people who were actually at Stonewall have to say about the film.
Rude Drew
Sex sells… And I’d rather see hot white guys then drag queens and weird gay dudes
richard s
@jwtraveler: not many of the original Stonewallers left alive. And its hard to get the truth anymore. So many of them were wasted on drugs back than. Many are long dead…wiped out during the vicious loss of lives in the 80s when AIDS really hit.
richard s
she’s obviously got a problem with Emmerich. Maybe he didnt cast her in a movie?
Brian JC Kneeland
If you haven’t seen the movie (or been in it) how can you have an opinion of it? I will make up my mind when I see the movie!
Rich Penway
it’s a MOVIE, not a fukking documentary.

” Silly Caucasian girl likes to play with Samurai swords”
Please white, heterosexual female Mara Wilson, tell us what happened at Stonewall.
You were there, right?
You personally saw that the only white people present were the evil police who were arresting everyone. But the black transgenders, the drag queens were definitely the majority, the only brave souls to stand up against evil whitey.
I think little caucasian girl, Mara Wilson, should stick to the joke that is modern day feminism. #killallmen – isn’t that their motto?
Kieran
Reading Mara’s tweets I can’t help but notice a pronounced bigoted homophobia on her part that is disturbing. It seems her self absorbed heterosexual privilege is rearing it’s ugly head here and it’s not pretty. When we want a white straight girls opinion about how we are portrayed on film we’ll let you know Mara. Until then, zip it.

Look at what Bryan Singer was accused of while filming the infamous shower scene in “Apt Pupil” and you’ll notice a pattern.

Maybe he did pack it with twinks to quench his thirst. I don’t know because I haven’t seen it yet. But it is his movie, it is his right. It isn’t a documentary, it is a fictional movie/story, based off of actual events. You want me to see what really happened? Make a documentary and release it. I will watch it too.

Her comments are absolutely necessary to all of the queer archetypes constantly left out of media representation. Her criticisms are absolutely valid. Everything you see in a film of any sort is a deliberate choice- regardless of who made the decisions.
It may be too soon to tell, but too often is the rainbow flag used for the benefit and enjoyment of a handful of colors, and not the rest of the spectrum.
PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID
Is this an example of what happens when an entitled twat presumes to take offence on behalf of others…BTW isn’t that *appropriation* and therefore *problematic*? Or maybe its a simply a rightwing troll whose homophobic cover has been blown, which isn’t such a stretch considering her cousin is hate monger Ben Shapiro

Yes let’s not attack men who appreciate gay young beauty bc we along with instinct, out, gaily grind, might have to look in the mirror and realize we too perpetuate this notion that u are only worthy if u look like the standard we help create.
J.r. Graff
To the people saying: make a documentary, plenty already have been made? Have you seen them? Possibly not because most Americans prefer a regular, story-based narrative. Well, if you’re going to do that story on something that really happened, then this thing called “historical accuracy” comes into play. If you’re not honoring those who truly started it all, then you deserve to be attacked for it.
Louis Goodrich
Wish I had the juice to pack anything full of twinks. 😉

1. Wilson seems to fit the definition of guilty overprivilaged. The fact that she said she feels strange as a straight white person. Ok, we get it, you’re overcompensating.
2. And again, where is Wilson getting her info, because, again, what I see is Trans Activists trying to negate the existence of the real person who threw the first punch at Stonewall, a black lesbian Drag King performer named Stormé DeLarverie.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm%C3%A9_DeLarverie
So again, Why are the Trans Activists not mentioning this person? Oh that’s right, because she represents so much of what they hate, Lesbians, and Drag.
Avery Alvarez
@J.r. Graff: “If you’re not honoring those who truly started it all, then you deserve to be attacked for it.”
Exactly. You deserve to be attacked. You don’t want to honor Stonewall, you want to honor your SJW agenda.

Ignorant homophobe. Read an actual history book, then you rant outrageously on Twitter and Tumblr – not the other way around, fat breeder.
Bob LaBlah
Dear, how else is he going to attract an audience large enough to break even (I doubt he even he expected a profit from it) and pay back the investors? Get real dear. Youth and muscle has ruled in the gay community since Olivia Newton John released Physical in 1981 that was obviously aimed at the gay community. From then on it became abs, biceps, buns and NEVER tell anyone you are over thirty years old. The last movie to make any money with a gay theme was the now twenty-year old movie Trick. And then it was mainly because of the star wearing a tight pair of BVD’s and the internet still in its infancy.
“Reality” is “Reality” in the eyes of the people he is going to need to flood the theaters for this movie to matter. And only a fool would think that (packed movie theatre) is going to happen in an age of free internet porn where you can see even better ones (twinks) in the buff for free. He is looking for an audience that simply isn’t there anymore. I wish them luck because I support anyone who gets up off of their ass and tries to do something. But this project was not well thought out in my opinion.
Does anyone else agree that in this age (2015) isn’t it a little silly that the word twink comes up as a misspelled word on any website commentary page?
Avery Alvarez
@Cam: Wilson has privilege, and she isn’t checking it. Heterosexual white girl wants to tell minorities how to minority.
She needs to take SEVERAL seats.

It’s not Emmerich, also historian David Carter says the riots had very large youth participation, and pictures of the nights show him right.

Stache99
@Rude Drew: Ha. Is is ever possible for you to be more shallow?
Stache99
@Bob LaBlah: Yeah, you’re right. Gay themed movies almost always feature young hotties to get their core audience in. A movie about history should be left to historical facts though. You’re never going to get the “magic mike” or twink lovers into it anyways.
That’s why this movie will probably go down in flames like the Ender’s Game. Movies like Milk on the other hand didn’t resort to that and packed plenty of people in. People that wanted to see great acting but more importantly… historic accuracy.
Avery Alvarez
@Amaurys Arias: Ahh the black gay male and their thug obsession….
Painting with a broad brush and making generalizations is fun.
Wanna play some more?
meghanada
@Amaurys Arias: You make zero sense. But you just confirm what I’ve noticed before – that as soon as homophobic abuse is narrowed down to white gays, the Black gays are just too happy to join the fest. No wonder Blacks are the most homophobic race in America; it’s because Black gays never address homophobia in their own communities, they’re too busy policing what white men write on their Grindr page, or coming up with other excuses to be upset with white gays.
JennyFromdabloc
We are so fortunate to have these young experts share accounts and opinions on such a pivotal event in 1969.

she comes off like a bitter has been turned down for one of the drag queen/transvestite roles.
tricky ricky
@Cam: I’m sick of these trans activists. the only trans at stonewall were transvestites and drag queens. transsexuals weren’t even a real thing yet except in a few isolated cases. they keep trying to rewrite history and make themselves a part of the origins of the gay rights movement which they were most certainly not.
meghanada
That woman has +57,000 comments on Twitter and +57,000 favorite tweets. She doesn’t have much going for her apart from the Outspoken Straight White Girl persona and the mob of adulatory goons who pay no one’s salary, the poor thing.

This article should have called it what it is, a homophobic comment by a straight girl.
Anyone remember the homophobia in “Matilda”? It was presenting butch lesbian as the worst and the ugliest thing a woman can be.
jayj150
I wonder if she has ever used that sassy wit and self-righteous indignation of hers to attack her first cousin, raging homophobe Ben Shapiro, in response to any of his multiple anti-gay rants on mainstream media. Or is her criticism reserved to openly gay film-makers.
Clark35
Who is she? I really don’t care about this movie since I’m not going to see it.
Cagnazzo82
@Rude Drew: Then maybe a historical film about Stonewall isn’t for you.
There’s always Sean Cody or Corbin Fisher.
Chris Duffy
My heart lifted hoping on a definitive film epic on the pivotal moment in gay rights history. Then I read who was directing it and my heart dropped. Emmerich makes shallow plastic crap thick on formula and glitz and VERY thin on story. He’s a German who has made no secret of his sneering contempt of American culture, and his films pander to the worst stereotypes of us. Armies of underwear twinks responsible for equality sounds like it plays perfectly to his narcissistic vision of history. It’s like putting Michael Bay in charge of Schindler’s List.
Kangol
DUH!!!!
This was obvious when he placed that young white fantasy twink at the center of the trailer!
He’s like so many in Hollywood, except he likes them male instead of female.
Cagnazzo82
Funny thing is this movie will come and go without regardless of the dust-up.
There’s a reason why gay movies are relegated as irrelevant niche and this is part of it. It’s all about titillation and sob stories and very little to do with substance.
Cagnazzo82
@Richard Hernandez: She is actually 100% right in pin-pointing the fatal flaw in gay movies, but again it doesn’t mean this isn’t still a mountain out of a molehill.
I literally do not hear about this movie at all outside of the gay forums I frequent.
totoro
I understand people got upset.
But there are two problem.
1) As many people pointed out, most people who scream did not see the movie. We don’t know what really the movie like. There may be fair proportion of characters of colors, and drags and transgenders.
2) “Black transgender women triggered riot by throwing her shoe/handbag/shot glass” sounds dramatic. But against most people’s belief, this story has never been confirmed. It was a very complex situation and no one actually, correctly remember what happened in that night! Imagine you are in a crowded bar and police hit up. Do you really think you KNOW what happened the other side of the bar? Even the people THERE does not know what exactly happened!
I am not defending the movie. I haven’t seen it either. But the who #WhiteWash thing sounds rather silly too. You don’t know what happened either. No one knows.
Sam Addison
Well I agree with her not every gay person is a model and is a size 28 or size zero. The sterio typical mold that makes average guys like myself question if I am attractive enough making it hard to look in the mirror and like myself for who I am. I am not jealous of fit people but just get tired that is what the media projects is normal and that if you are not fit you are not attractive to get noticed. Probably why I suffer so much with deep depression because I am average and don’ t have a 6 pack or washboard stomach.
SportGuy
Yes Mara! Love this chick! It is so obvious and blatant that this was his intent all along and I am glad that it appears people are seeing that and that this film is crap and does not depict the real history. Rock on Mara!
Bob LaBlah
@Stache99: If you ever wanted to see clandestine gay twink porn at its absolute worst catch the next showing of The Journey: Absolution with Mario Lopez. Ender’s Game has nothing on that turkey of a movie. I watched it late at night about five years ago on The Movie Channel, you know that cable station that shows god awful movies like that just to be evil or to prove there are people who will watch anything. At least thats how I felt after it was over. It is so awful the only thing you can do is sit there and wonder why didn’t they simply have those guys have sex with each other instead of asking them to TRY to act.

@Bob Speck: yeah, her expertise will enlighten us
Franklin
I’m sorry, but I thought it was an open secret about gay directors in Hollywood and the casting couch. I mean she didn’t just pull that idea out of thin air. Remember she spent a significant portion of her life in this industry, which means that she’s probably personally known several young, gay male actors. People talk. Don’t get mad just because a straight girl is the one to call it out.
Louis
This woman projected homophobia especially that juvenile and ignorant purse throwing comment she made regarding Stonewall.
Yet surprisingly some are actually defending her here trying to erase the ignorance she projected and claim it as truth?
Since when does bigotry constitute as truth? Smh.
Bobby French
Delusional.
meghanada
@Cagnazzo82: Just get a grip. That the actors are young, is not because of titillation – it’s because historians themselves determined that homeless and runaway youths played an outsized role in the riots. If anyone was titillated by that, maybe it goddess fate who put the twinks where they were on the night of the outbreak. Take things to her and spare gay men from the constant bashing for a moment.
meghanada
@Franklin: She didn’t – she’s a former child actor, period. And even if she had had a longer career, she, as a woman, would have no experience of anything like your little story even if there were any basis to it.
Cagnazzo82
@meghanada: Ok, so I was not going to watch this movie anyway so it’s a bit absurd getting so involved in the debate.
Gay movies will be what they will be (which unfortunately means they can never interest me as much as real movies).
Life goes on.

@meghanada: No, but she has eyes and ears doesn’t she? You really don’t think actors and actresses talk to each other about the goings on in Hollywood? Bill Cosby was raping women for years, and lots of people knew about it.
Giancarlo85
@Joseph Passero: FUCKING NAILED IT.
And that’s why some on here don’t see that. They want to see gay white men in all the movies about gay history. They don’t want ethnic and racial minorities represented. That would offend their sensibilities. For some gay men on here only gay white men matter. Everyone else can go be homeless and live in some shelter.
Giancarlo85
@Derek Perron: “Yes let’s not attack men who appreciate gay young beauty bc we along with instinct, out, gaily grind, might have to look in the mirror and realize we too perpetuate this notion that u are only worthy if u look like the standard we help create.”

Creamsicle
I don’t understand all the vitriol being slung here. She’s making a very cogent point about deleting certain people from history.
We try so hard to get people to acknowledge the contributions of gay people during the Civil rights movement in America and the contributton of gays throughout history. How is this different?
Giving this movie a pass is tacitly giving the ok to deleting minority contributions to Stonewall and is like saying it’s fine to gloss over WHY gays were persecuted and ghettoized in the first place. Downplaying the role of Transgenders and drag queens to the start of the fight for gay equality is like saying that those segments of gay life deserve to be left behind in our fight for greater social acceptance and it would be as cowardly of us as it was when women’s suffrage protesters dropped all their concern for the rights of the black Americans who had been their allies.
Clark35
@moldisdelicious: Typical race baiter.
Evji108
All this ridiculous judgement about a film that is not even released. Due to the controversy, I will be sure to see the film. You couldn’t pay for this kind of publicity.
Mike Topjian
I’m hoping all of this controversy translates into big box office for this film. A Hollywood remake of a Hollywood film. You don’t like the trailer? You think it should be a documentary? Then you should go and make your film. Gay films are few and far between. Again, this is a Hollywood remake of a Hollywood film. It has the opportunity of actually being seen by a mainstream audience. If you hate the director, hope that he’s put together a crap sandwich…but you won’t know until it’s released. Patience is a virtue. Knowing what battles to fight is wisdom.
Will Elle
It’s no accident people are coming out and saying these directors are guilty of the same things.. Corey Feldman and Corey Haim anyone? Hollywood has a disease, and they are using it to brainwash people. Either listen or go back to sleep.

The straight media has been busy attacking it. This is going to be the most controversial movie of all times. And finally an optimistic story about triumph and victory, in which the gay does not die at the end.

@Creamsicle: You have not seen the movie yet.
Your proof of “deleting minority contributions to Stonewall” is where, exactly?
The 2 minute trailer?
“Downplaying the role of Transgenders and drag queens to the start of the fight for gay equality”
Who is downplaying them? Have you seen the movie? The concern is about OVERplaying their part. Some would like to steal credit for the whole thing for themselves.

@Kieran: so no one can have an opinion about anything that’s not part of their race/gender or sexual preference? Come on! You went too far with the white privilege bit. I don’t know why Matilda wrote these things, we haven’t heard many crazy things from her. So i would say, in the same way you don’t want people to judge the movie by the preview, maybe don’t jump conclusions about her motives by these tweets. She’s also not saying anything others aren’t already saying.

@SeeingAll: So you’re saying her tone would change If she lost one role to RuPaul because the director wants more “diversity”, yet it’s considered whining if transgendered and other actors of color are upset because they lose out on a several roles, including ones that are meant to be cast specifically with them in mind, because hollywood wants more “mass appeal”? Got it.

She’s not wrong, though. The riots were famously led by a black transwoman and we haven’t seen anything but young white boys in the trailers. Um… Why are some of you folks calling her homophobic, a) she literally said after all this, she suggested that Dylan Marron of “every word spoken” and “welcome to nightvale” fame has a better more valid opinion on the movie trailer and cast list, because he is literally a gay man of color, who is pointing out the systematic racism in Hollywood casting. B) her only acting gig now outside of voice over, is Welcome to Nightvale a podcast where one of the most pivotal relationships is between the radio host Cecil and the scientist Carlos, like every big episode is surrounding a next big step in their romantic relationship. And they say again and again that this is an interracial gay couple. And like they have a lot of queer couples as back ground characters and they aren’t afraid to say the B word, like I mean they actually say Bisexual. Most of the main cast for the show is gay, gay men play Cecil and Carlos, people of color are playing people of color. For me it is the most satisfying piece of media out there for me.
She is simply voicing the same concern that her queer friends have already stated, you just didn’t know that. I mean shit she doesn’t even do screen stuff anymore unless she is doing it because she really believes in the project or because her friends are making it.
I mean can’t we just accept that out there, Queer People of Color and trans folks are pissed about the erasure of them from the most pivotal moment in recent queer history. Stormie De Lavarie threw The first punch and roused others to act and she was a Black Lesbian. The first person to start fighting in the Stonewall was a Black trans woman named Marsha P Johnson, any one who watches PBS during pride month or even reads a basic LGBT history book knows that. There would be no Cristopher Street Uprising or Stonewall without People of Color and trans women, so really understand why we as queer people of color and trans people are pissed about this. You only seem to notice one of the few White voices who spoke out on this and of course you picked the one ex child star to do it, hey I mean her White co-star Cecil Baldwin also stated the same stuff and you didn’t pick up on it. So really please don’t do this, just get that we are mad and maybe acknowledge why we are mad. A lot of us are pissed because the trailer didn’t have a single person of color in it and the cast list only had one. I mean a lot of is QPOC have been complaining about this film for months, you just weren’t listening. And guess before you say “go make your own media” there is a group out there making a movie but I guarantee you they don’t have the budget this film has and it will probably get swept under the rug.
SeeingAll
@Cole Marentette: We must have watched different trailers.

Actually, if you look at the news photos of the riots, then look at Emmerich’s trailer, it looks like Emmerich included even more non-white races than were really there.
Jordan Lee
It was my initial thought when I saw the trailer… Not so much the race thing, but that all the cast looked like 16 year old skinny twinks. Were there any men there? And the film looks so polished and colorful, it fails to capture the grittiness of the era.
Mando888
@animaux: How is it homophobic to point out fact? Emmerich has a thing for young, twinky white guys.
And the tweet right after the last one included in this article is her explicitly saying that people should seek out opinions from Dylan Marron (who she works with on “Welcome to Night Vale”) because he is a non-white gay man who has been calling attention to things like this for far longer.
A for effort Queerty, but F for research.

Does Dylan Marrow use homophobic stereotypes when he criticises whitewashing in LGBT circles? No.
Would Emmerich be accused of being a peadophile if he was a straight director who made a movie staring a young woman? No. A womenizer at best. But not a paedophile, which is reserved solely for gays and used only by straights, such as Matilda.
Straight girl Matilda is either homophobic or losing her mind.
Btw., the movie Matilda was extremely homophobic.

The Stone Wall riots would take place during this legendary time in not only ‘LGTB History’ but ‘American History’ and even better ‘World History’ because this would be the introduction to everything that has been taking place thus far in our world. There are places in the world that being your true authentic-self and how and who you chose to identify yourself as can have you beaten to inches of your life and even worse, killed. Facts are always changed throughout history to satisfy someone’s need to alter the truth because truthfully if you look at the world maps of the early 30’s and 40’s that were used by the United States all the other countries where visibly smaller in size and the United States wasn’t just bigger but was the biggest. There were continents that most would see on a map and would see as almost miniature places.
You can literally star a war with words, misconceptions and preconceived notions about others and mainly just blatant lies and untruths. Once I would be a victim of a senseless act of violence, which many felt I deserved because I was Black, Gay and at time I was allegedly using drugs. Everything that happened to me was allegedly warrant and what I deserved because I was in an alleged drug house and I was an alleged undercover cop, who got caught and got dealt with. I was allegedly pistol whip, drugged and beaten to inches of my life, which didn’t happen nor have I ever been a cop or was I using drugs on this night/morning per say. Before the ink on our local newspaper could dry, about 5 version of this story would surface around (one making the actual newspaper and local news) and all made me look really bad.
Since I was gay, the stories went from bad to worse but of these tales were to deface my character and make the gentlemen who would assault me, seem like heroes. There were people involved with spreading rumors about what actually happening but many would give testimonies of allegedly helping me and even nursing me back to health.
It was rumored that I was kidnapped and held against my will in a basement for a few days, which couldn’t be far from the truth.
I was in that basement for about 30 minutes and all of this activity would take place during the day not at night or during the bewitching hours.
It was rumored that the family that lived in the apartment above where I was held, were these amazing saints that saved my life.
Which was far from the truth and the Mother of this brood (the family) would be responsible for spreading the story and mixing up ever fact within minutes. One thing she did do was rule out the fact that she was a horrible tenant, that was evicted because she was back in her rent for about 5 months. Of course she blamed moving out of the apartment on my unfortunate incident because she couldn’t sleep there with everything that took place. “I had nightmares about seeing this guy beaten so badly!” Was what she told people when asked why she moved or left the building.
She claimed that she kept me in her place after fighting off my attackers, which if you must know, she ran upstairs and locked the door once she realized the one guy had a gun. She was this scared woman and I didn’t blame her but for her to claim to have nursed me ‘the gay cop’ back to health for about a week, which couldn’t be far from the truth was just the most outlandish lie that I have ever heard. The worst part is that most thought it was true.
Now this woman barely talked with me during or after everything took place because once the actual police (the real cops) showed up and came around, this woman couldn’t stop running me down and talking very openly about someone she met for a minute.
This incident would take place about 13 years ago and just the other week, someone would talk about it but I never knew who started all the rumors and lies. Now to find out that this woman (The Mother) would solely be responsible for my shame, my pain and all my guilt.
What is a bit ironic is how her daughter would end up being a Lesbian (which I think is just GREAT) but of course this delusional mother doesn’t want to believe her daughter would likes woman.
I do remember this girl (at the time) would actual be one of the nicest people to me when everyone else including the cops and EMT workers were really mean to me and mainly because they found out that I was gay and I was gushing blood. No one wanted to come near me and I refused treatment at first because I was treated so horribly when the EMT showed up. “This better not take long because we only have 30 minutes before our shift ends!” was what was said to me. Of course I refused treatment but then 8 hours later of still bleeding on myself, I was forced to go to the hospital because a cop touched my blood on a door when I ran out of the basement after being attacked.
This woman spun this story that when I heard it, I almost believe it.
It must have been good enough to make news because it was on the front page of my local paper. Of course it included my full name and of course the wrong address because the newspaper had me living in this actual place and I didn’t live there.
The same deal with the legend of the Stone Wall Riots, all it takes is one person with nothing to prove or lose to start telling untruths and that becomes now the story and legend. One minute it was CD’s, then it was Lesbians, then it was Transsexuals and then there were Gays all throw up in there that would be responsible for throwing the first brick, first rock, first disco ball. Every week something changed and it went from this historic moment to now a Who’s Who or a Whodunit……..
