Former SNP Leader Says Gay Marriage Will Lead To Facism In Scotland

Gordon Wilson, former head of the Scottish National Party, is expected to make a speech this week in which he’ll denounce marriage equality as a step towards “state fascism.”

Following a public consultation that showed 65% of Scots in favor of marriage equality, the Scottish government announced it would introduce a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in Parliament.

Wilson, who led the SNP from 1979 to 1990, is not at all happy with the developments, and will reportedly call the consultation a “fraud” on Thursday in his speech to Scotland for Marriage, a church-led group that opposes same-sex marriage.

The Telegraph reports:

“What is the point of canvassing the views of the electorate and then cynically discarding them? If you think we are sliding down a road to state fascism and intolerance, you may not be far wrong,” he will say.

“Be warned, those MSPs of all parties on a narrow majority who exercise their ‘free’ vote for same sex marriage. They may find that a free vote has as much validity as a ‘free’ lunch. If they ignore public opinion, a P45 may await. Do not scorn the electorate.”

According to the BBC, the public consultation claimed that “some 64% of those who responded [including postcard and petition responses] said they were against same-sex marriage,” but “excluding postcard and petition responses to the consultation from within Scotland the outcome shows 65% were in favour and 35% against.”

Responding to Wilson’s statements, the Equality Network’s Tom French said, “The fascist regimes of the 20th century persecuted, tortured and murdered LGBT people. In contrast, the Scottish Government are promoting equality and religious freedom for all. No religious body will be required to conduct same-sex marriages, but those that want to will now have the freedom to do so. This is a fair compromise that is supported by over two-thirds of people in Scotland.”
