Coming at you

The full “My Friend Dahmer” trailer is here, and it’s a darkly delicious serving of total creepcakes

Based on the bestselling graphic novel by John “Derf” Backderf, My Friend Dahmer explores the rapidly disintegrating mind of a high schooler (Ross Lynch) who’d go on to murder (and occasionally eat) 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. The film isn’t mere conjecture, either — Backderf was a friend of the real Jeffrey Dahmer while growing up.

“It [will be] a lot like the book,” Backderf tells Rolling Stone, “where you go into it expecting a certain thing and you get to the end and it’s something completely different. It’s not a slasher film – it’s a very melancholy tale full of regret and remorse that shows this young kid spiraling into madness.”

Homophobes are going to just love this movie. Btw, who’s producing it, Westboro Baptist?

I’m familiar with “Derf”‘s cartoonist work, and it’s certainly weird that he happened to know Dahmer as a kid. But I wish he hadn’t done this. I can’t even click on the trailer.

Really disturbing. I get the whole biopic thing, but is this film really going to depict him killing all of those young people, including all those young black and brown men? Or is it going to whitewash his monstrous murderousness, which would make it even worse?

Derf says his girlfriend phoned him saying that a high school “friend” of his was a cannibal killer, and asked him to guess who it was… His first guess wasn’t Dahmer. So there was one EVEN nuttier than Jeff Dahmer in that stifling 1970s Ohio high school

Ross Lynch is a very talented guy. He auditioned for the roll of Billy in “Billy Elliott the Musical” and I believe he was too professionally polished and handsome for the role. He’s a terrific dance, singer and musician. I want to see this film, but I don’t believe any amount of bullying leads to someone wanting to kill young men and eat them because he because he finds them attractive. Just kill out of hatred, perhaps, but the rest had to be more complicated than that.
