Florida-based blogger Mark Madrak’s seeing red over an article on the St. Petersburg Times’ front page yesterday. And for good reason – just look at that inflammatory headline.
While reporters insists they were simply reporting on a group of Floridian preacher’s looking to ban gay marriage, Madrak reads it as a homophobic “How To:”
…The article is all about how to rally the ‘Jesus’ troops against gay marriage, oh and anyone else living in a domestic partnership, gay or straight. There is detailed information about how, specifically, a group of pastors (dubbed “The Pastor’s Briefing”) who met this week in the state are going to try their darnedest to get their congregations to vote on hate and make it legal to treat gay people as second class citizens.
We read the article and definitely didn’t get the impression the authors – Sherri Day and Alex Leary – were pushing any such agenda. The headline, however, definitely deserves some scrutiny. We’ve included text below.
PULPIT PUSH: NO GAY NUPTIALS

Activists recruit pastors to help pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
With a new poll raising doubts about the prospects of an amendment essentially banning gay marriage in Florida, backers of the measure on Monday urged pastors at a Baptist church to mobilize their congregations.
Representatives from Yes2Marriage.org told pastors to hold prayer services, pass out yard signs, conduct voter registration drives and recruit volunteers to help with campaign efforts.
The activists urged pastors to preach the virtues of traditional unions on what they have dubbed “Marriage Sunday” – Oct. 19, the day before early voting begins. Religious leaders were told they could find sample sermons at the campaign Web site.
A new poll shows a majority of Floridians support the measure, but the number falls short of the 60 percent a constitutional amendment needs for passage.
“We have a pulpit; we have a captive audience,” the Rev. Tom Messer, head of Trinity Baptist Church in Jacksonville, told the pastors. “You have an opportunity to influence them. … If we can get this passed on the ballot, I think this changes the landscape of the future.”
Messer, one of the leaders of the statewide effort, said he came up with the idea to rally pastors six weeks ago. Since then, he and his team have targeted more than 6,000 churches, including 3,000 Southern Baptist congregations. The amendment defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman and does not recognize any other pairing as a legal union.
Monday’s meeting, dubbed a “Pastor’s Briefing,” was one of six talks scheduled to occur around the state. The group also plans to reach out to pastors in Jacksonville, Orlando, Fort Myers, Miami and Crestview.
The meetings began on the same day that a poll by the independent Quinnipiac University Polling Institute showed 55 percent of Florida voters support the ban. Forty-one percent oppose it and 4 percent are undecided. In an earlier poll in June, Quinnipiac found 58 percent of voters for the measure.
The new poll, conducted Sept. 2-4, included 1,427 Florida voters and had a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points.
Election observers say the poll shows that the Amendment 2 campaign faces an uphill battle.
“If I were the same sex (ban) proponents, I’d be worried,” said Quinnipiac pollster Peter A. Brown. “One assumes they thought this thing was going to be a slam dunk. And clearly, it’s not going to be a slam dunk.”
While ballot initiative experts hold that support generally fades with time, it is also true that many people are just starting to pay attention to the election.
And the measure could get a boost from John McCain’s selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. Palin has excited the conservative base in ways that McCain had not.
“Every vote is going to be important on Amendment 2,” David C. Gibbs III, a lawyer who represented Terri Schiavo’s parents, told the pastors Monday. “You’ve got to get that 60 percent. This is not an issue I see popping up every year. I really believe in this election we have one shot to entrench it in our Constitution.”
Gibbs assured pastors that they could speak in favor of the amendment from their pulpits. He said IRS tax code forbids pastors from using churches to campaign for political candidates, but the law allows them to stump on behalf of moral or social issues.
The measure’s opponents cheered the latest poll results. They also dispute the argument that the amendment’s defeat will open the door for radical change or cause a loss of religious freedoms.
“What they’re proposing is a radical change,” said Derek Newton, campaign manager of Florida Red & Blue, which opposes the measure. “What they’re proposing is very damaging to millions of Floridians. It’s a fundamentally bad amendment and a dangerous amendment, and we are hopeful and optimistic that the voters will reject it.”
Proponents are determined to get the word out. They are asking pastors to buy $150 “church action kits” that include 25 yard signs, 50 bumper stickers, a DVD for church services and a CD “loaded” with promotional fliers and bulletin inserts.
At First Baptist Church in Gibsonton, the polling data spurred some local pastors to commit to taking bold action.
The Rev. Kerry Nance, pastor of Southside Baptist Church in South Tampa, plans to preach about the importance of passing the amendment.
“A lot of people do not know the issues,” Nance said. “If people do know the issues, it would motivate them to be more apt to go vote.”
The Rev. Mac Clements, pastor of First Baptist of Gibsonton, said he reserves his sermons for preaching the Gospels. Still, he plans to speak out on behalf of the amendment.
“I’ll be a little more aggressive not only encouraging our people to be registered to vote, but let them know to support this amendment and to vote for it,” Clements said. “As Christians, we need to help set the agenda.”

We’d get more done if those Pride parades were a manifestation of our collective outrage and a march for our civil rights.
We need a Stonewall Riots 2.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but when was the last time there was a front page headline “Pastors advocate national health insurance so that all can have coverage”?
or “Pastors support Constitutional amendment banning divorce?”
And to backtrack a bit, this information is front page headline news?
Steve
Someone should point out to these bigots that our constitution still guarantees “equal protection.” Marriage is a collection of about a thousand of those protections. Under “equal protection”, if the state denies marriage to ANY then it must deny marriage to EVERY class of people. The anti-marriage amendment is not just against gay marriage. It is against every marriage.
Jaroslaw
Steve – you’re right except the court has to interpret equal protection includes Gays.

Andrew are you blind or did you forget how to read?

Boy if you fail to see the obvious then its no wonder were so fucked up here.
dizzyspins
I dont see the story as an anti-gay how-to, its just reporting what those bigots are up to. I suppose there’s the risk that some homophobe reading the story now knows where to go, but don’t we want to know what the other side is up to? Or should we censor anything said by the Right, in case it gets in the hands of the uninformed?
One issue I do have with stories about gay-marriage bans is that often they end up talking about people who oppose an amendment that opposes gay marriage. It gets into almost a double-negative, where you’re not sure sure which side an interview subject is on. “I’m against the measure that is not for banning gay rights!”
for example: “What they’re proposing is a radical change,” said Derek Newton, campaign manager of Florida Red & Blue, which opposes the measure.
Neither the group name, the quote or the sentence hints at which side of gay marriage Newton is on. I had to read it twice to get he’s pro gay. It gets confusing after a while! Or maybe Im just having a senior moment.

THE CURE for HIV/AIDS…….AMBUSH
THE IDEA that AMBUSH cures AIDS
is being proven by the more than 400 individuals who have taken a dose of 60 ml three times daily for 21 days. The result is that AMBUSH ‘KILLS’ the virus by causing the protein envelope to rupture and the viral particles are discarded by the white blood cells. AMBUSH is able to ‘KILL’ the virus that are ‘hiding’ in the lymph system by its ‘natural radioactive’ properties. This process allows the body to ‘return to normal health’ with a corresponding immunity to that or those strains of the virus.
What is AMBUSH ?
AMBUSH is a radioactive isotope of uranium that is found in the ‘palm’ plant of which there are more than 3000 species. When ingested, AMBUSH causes the body temperature in the trunk area to rise to about 102 degrees when the individual is sleeping. The preparation takes four hours per batch, which is then given to the individuals for consumption 60 ml three times daily for 21 days. AMBUSH is a herbal preparation in this form but it contains an active ingredient which is a ‘NEW’ crystalline substance, a drug from the ‘palm plant’ similarly to ASPIRIN originating from the willow tree bark
RESULTS:
After 21 days on AMBUSH, ALL the individuals experienced a decrease in viral load to undetectable, an increase in cd4, increase in RBC, an improvement in general health such as more color to the face, decrease in Buffalo hump, an increase in gluteal muscles, a decrease to having no joint pains whereby individuals can bend to touch their toes, and walk up steps are but a few examples. There is also a dramatic increase in their sexual appetite beginning after the first week of therapy
DISCUSSION:
In any plant concoction such as percolated ‘tea’, there are 30-40,000 compounds, whi ch would take the scientific community twenty years to isolate one particular ingredient if they knew what they were looking for. The LORD GOD has given me seven steps to isolate the active ingredient, which is soft and metallic in nature and has a carbon- uranium-sulfur-(classified)-phentolamine configuration or structure. This is similar to Federick Kekule and the discovery of the benzene ring where he dreamt the structure.
As an antiviral and ‘natural radioactivity’ producing agent, AMBUSH is also effective against leukemia, lupus and HPV. Here I am saying that I have ‘GIVEN’ AMBUSH in the same ‘strength’ and dosage to patients with leukemia, lupus and HPV. A 35 year old male with HIV found it difficult to impossible to urinate was put on ‘green tea’ and water while the doctors contemplated prostrate surgery. One of the doctors gave him my number , I sent him a supply of AMBUSH an d he has not been given any more ARV’s, since taking AMBUSH 18 months ago, is in ‘good’ health and has expressed a willingness to be examined by HIV investigators like many others who have taken AMBUSH.
I have sent this ‘IDEA’ to most HIV research agencies, scientist of the field, universities, hospitals, clinics, politicians and news agencies to which it is REJECTED because the name of THE LORD GOD is mentioned. He has steered me scientifically through the processes such as which plant and how to produce the active ingredient. What are the odds of a Florida Pharmacist picking a plant would contain the CURE for HIV/AIDS ?
I have never charged any of the people for their supply of AMBUSH but a life saving has been spent on the project with NO renumeration from any sources because AMBUSH falls outside the walls of modern medicine and research.
PROPOSAL:
My proposal is that I PROVE that AMBUSH CURES HIV/AIDS by giving it to a number of END-STAGE or DRUG-RESISTANT people and the scientific community watches their recovery. This proposal addresses the problem in that I have already outlaid the results to be obtained.
This IDEA is unconventional in that the scientific community has rejected AMBUSH because I say it is GOD given. Secondly if I wrote it according to certain standards, then it might be peer reviewed. However, THE LORD GOD has also shown me that there are five enzyme systems associated with the virus, reverse transcriptase, protease, fusion and two more of which causes the virus to be AIRBOURNE. This means that without DIVINE intervention mankind and ALL warm- blooded mammals will be extinct in a number of years.
The PROOF of what I am saying is found in scientific papers wherein it is found that when the protease cuts the viral strands, it cuts it at DIFFERENT lengths EVERY time, to which it should always be a valine at the end but is a different amino acid every time. This is why it is IMPOSSIBLE to produce a VACCINE.
Since this is NOT a hypothesis but there are about 400 individuals who have taken AMBUSH, here lies a vast area in which to check, recheck and confirm that AMBUSH CURES AIDS. Let it be mentioned that during the HIV reproductive cycle, reverse transcriptase converts viral RNA into DNA compatible to human genetic materials. Thus the human DNA has been ‘hijacked’ and since each person has a DIFFERENT DNA, then the new viral copy is unique to that person which shows that each individual has a DIFFERENT STRAIN of the virus. Consider two HIV positive people swapping viral strains and increasing its complexity with multiple partners.
It can also be proposed that they be revisited as proof that the strain or strains that they had were ‘killed’ at the time of taking AMBUSH considering that a person can catch as many different strains as there are people who are infected by HIV.
I am also willing to work with the scientific community in identifying those individuals who took AMBUSH and wish to be identified with this process notwithstanding that some are stigmatized while others are jubilant,
Once AMBUSH is verified as being able to accomplish that which is aforementioned then the next stage might be the natural and artificial synthesis of the substance.
Finally, if this is accepted or not, believed or not, THE LORD GOD always wins and this is the heavenly truth to which AMBUSH was divinely given to mankind for the CURE of HIV/AIDS and it will be here forever. Apostle Shada Mishe.
