Sequin in a Blue Room is a new coming-of-age thriller and the directorial debut of Samuel Van Grinsven. It centers around a 16-year-old high school student who becomes addicted to NSA encounters on the fictional gay sex app Anon. Using the alias “Sequin,” after the silver sequined crop top he wears during each of his hookups, the teen gets an invite to the maze-like Blue Room, which turns out to be an anonymous gay sex party. There, he connects with a handsome stranger and, well, you’ll have to see the movie to learn what happens next.

A movie about young guys engaging in tawdry anonymous sex? Can’t wait to see it – this is just what an insane world needs right now.

So according to the trailer, this 16-year-old twink teenager is having sex with adult men, and is wandering around an adult sex club, which would be illegal in some US states, and there’s some sort of brutality that takes place, leaving him bruised and beaten? I mean, come on, this is like so many bad stereotypes of gay life just amplified.
It’s any filmmaker’s right to make the films they want and can get financed and I’m not saying that the scenario imagined her doesn’t happen or isn’t of interest to viewers, but please, can we get different kinds of stories? There are numerous LGBTQ stories in the US that never or rarely receive screen time.

Is it exploitative? I wouldn’t know as I haven’t seen it. Why judge a film before you see it or know more about it? It might very well be PROVOCATIVE & INTERESTING & – dare I say it? – GOOD!
