Though the great gay hope led in early opinion polls, gay Irish member of parliament David Norris has conceded defeat in his country’s presidential elections. Looks like Icelandic Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir will remain the only openly gay world leader… well, besides James Buchanan.

His dropping out of the race and returning really hurt him. He did not lead — or come close to leading — a national poll since late September. In the end he was eliminated on the second count, placing fifth out of seven candidates, only outscoring the woman who organized the Special Olympics 2003 and a crazy Eurosong winner-turned-political kook.
I think he may very well would have commanded more of the vote had he not dropped out.
