Canadian coppers have a murder mystery on their hands.
An unidentified 35-year old Winnipeg man died Monday morning after being beaten outside nightspot Club 200. Authorities do not think hate motivated the attacker, who remains at large.
Police know little about how the fight started, but said they don’t believe it was a hate crime.
“We’ve pretty much ruled that out,” said Sgt. Kelly Dennison on Monday.
“This is one of those incidents where [investigators] are looking for anybody’s assistance, anybody who may have been at this bar that night, or anybody that may have seen this altercation outside of the nightclub.”
While it’s too bad this kid died, it’s nice to know it wasn’t a hate crime – just good old fashioned murderous violence! What a relief…

um….if they know nothing about the crime and are soliciting anyone’s help…how can they say it wasn’t motivated by hate?

The Winnipeg Free Press reported this:
A spokesman for the club, who did not want his name used, said the victim was in the bar before he was assaulted.
He said the man left the club and apparently met another man, a former patron of Club 200, outside on the front sidewalk. The two argued and the victim, the smaller of the two men, was assaulted and possibly hit his head on the pavement.
Staff inside only realized what had happened when they saw the flashing lights of an ambulance, he said.
Police stressed the homicide is not a case of a hate crime, but appears to be the result of a dispute between two men. No one has been charged.

“Authorities do not think hate motivated the attacker”…
You probably mean to say authorities don’t think it was a hate crime. Anytime someone is beaten up and killed, there’s almost certainly some hate involved… 🙂

It’s completely meaningless if this homicide is or isn’t determined to be a “hate crime.” It matters not one bit to police. Hate crime laws are the politicizing of criminal offenses, and are probably the most symbolic & useless legislation to hamper police & prosecutors. Just focus on the underlying criminal offense and don’t add more hoops to jump through.
