Human Rights Campaign – the “largest” gay non-profit in all the land – just released a series of maps depicting the state of anti-gay marriage union.
In the map above, dark pink represents states with a state constitution restricting marriage to one man and woman. Light pink, meanwhile, indicates states with laws against same-sex marriage. We never thought pink could be so ugly…

Interesting how the geographic region that is showing the strongest support of this Constitutionally sound point of view happens to strongest within the original 13 Colonies… I wonder if that’s an indicator as to how the dominoes are going to fall?
I believe the whole idea offered by a couple of the candidates from our side of the aisle about Civil Unions and how, as a FEDERAL mandate it will over time, serve as the catalyst to freeing up some of those darker red states but most especially the pink… it’s the perfect degree of “nudge” and as we are seeing in New Jersey, the semantics will change within short time.

Ga., Va. and SC were also parts of the original 13, too…. SC and Va. both being plantation states built on the wealth made by slaves, and Ga. being a scrappy little buffer colony to keep the Spaniards in Fla. from attacking Mama and Papa Warbucks in Charleston.
The dividing lines I think will eventually be Mason-Dixon based, along with the CA-OR-WA eastern borders.

The map is inaccurate. Vermont does not have a law “against” same-sex marriage. It does not, however, have a law validating same-sex marriage. We should have one soon, however. And we were the first with Civil Unions, which was a good step forward at that time.

In fact, Vermont recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other states, i.e. Massachusetts.

I found this map on wikipedia, and it offers a bit more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_SSM_Laws.png
The divide here seems to be NE & West Coast vs just about everyone else – although the two maps aren’t completely consistent with each other.
