Gay Pol Mark Pocan Wins Tammy Baldwin’s Seat In Wisconsin

The Associated Press has declared Mark Pocan the winner in Wisconsin’s 2nd congressional district, taking the seat held by Tammy Baldwin, the projected winner in the Badger State Senate race.

Pocan, a State Assemblyman, received strong support from HRC and the Victory Fund. “Mark Pocan is an outstanding public servant who will be a strong and authentic voice for LGBT Americans in Congress,” said Victory Fund CEO Chuck Wolfe. “It’s fitting that as Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin fights to win a historic victory in the Senate, Mark Pocan will follow in her footsteps as one of the most powerful voices for LGBT equality in America.”

Pocan, who worked to get benefits for the same-sex partners of state employees while he was in the Assembly, told the Washington Blade he plans to fight to repeal the Defense of Marriage act and pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the immigration-related Uniting American Families Act.
