“Now yesterday, when I announced my candidacy, one of [Andrew] Cuomo’s top surrogates dismissed me as an ‘unqualified lesbian.’
And I just want to say tonight that she was technically right – that I don’t have my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs. Though in my defense, there’s a lot of paperwork involved.”— Cynthia Nixon at a NY Governorship campaign event, responding to being called an “unqualified lesbian” by Christine Quinn.
Nixon posted this portion of her speech to Twitter, where it has since racked up over 150K likes and 30K shares:
“When I announced yesterday that I’m running for gov, one of Cuomo’s top surrogates dismissed me as an “unqualified lesbian.” It’s true that I never received my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs, though in my defense there’s a lot of paperwork required.” ????

I will say this about her candidacy: she makes me wonder what happened to that once-upon-a-time rising lesbian political star named Quinn, who amounted to nothing more than Mike Bloomburg’s personal ass kisser.
Heywood Jablowme
Not quite, since Christine Quinn ran against Bloomberg for mayor once and lost badly.
However, “Quinn’s office had appropriated millions of dollars to organizations that do not exist, and that the money was then secretly routed to organizations favored by individual council members.” (Wikipedia)
That non-profit called Qualified Lesbians For Fashion Sense should have been a clue. 🙂

when did being qualified for office stop anyone? Look at the White House! I think Cynthia is a perfect candidate because no one owns her
barkomatic
By the time Nixon would take office, she would most certainly be “owned” as all politicians would be. There would many promises to campaign donors and public supporters.
I’m not sure I want my state to be her political entry level position, but I’ll keep an open mind.
Brian
You ain’t lying barkomatic. I’m in California where Meg Whitman ran for governor a few years back. I was actually excited to hear about her candidacy, a non career politician with an extensive business background sounded perfect to me, someone who is revolted by the status quo in California politics. By the time the election rolled around, the only way I would have voted for her would have been if somebody paid me a large sum. She was 110% politician by the end. It was clear that her campaign was focus grouped within an inch of its life and she would change her mind and positions depending on whichever way the wind was blowing. If she had just maintained her position as a business person and political outsider, I’m sure she would have won. It sure worked for Trump. I ended up voting Libertarian and we got stuck with Jerry Brown, who is also a nightmare, but at least he’s consistent with his (horrible) convictions.

Look at the states of Missouri and Illinois and the disasters they elected for their governors. One road into office firing machine guns and setting off explosions (Mo) while in Illinois the guy is a billionaire who was so polarizing during the budget battle (nearly two years without a budget) Powerball and Megamillions threatened to pull out of the state if they didnt figure out some way to pay the winners. You have to learn to compromise when you are a politician. Reagan did it behind closed doors but he did it and got things done. These new fangled flyby nights just don’t get it.
Ummmm Yeah
This is just stupid. The comment didn’t question her being a lesbian. It questioned how her being a lesbian qualifies her for an office she has no other qualification for.
Donston
A sarcastic response to Cynthia’s sarcastic response? Good one.
startenout
Dear Lord, I hope this is meant to be sarcastic. We know and she knew what the comment means… she was ignoring the rudeness of it all and taking a higher and funnier road.

What are her views on the issues though? If she’s on the extreme left of the political spectrum, she won’t win.
Brian
She’s a New York lesbian actress. You really have to ask if she’s part of the extreme left?
Kangol
She’s very progressive. She will have to get past Repub-lite Democrat Cuomo. If that happens, she’ll win in November, no matter who the Republican is. Don’t forget, Trumpkins & the GOP are extremely unpopular, and even more so now that he and the Repubs passed that disastrous tax giveaway to billionaires that unfairly penalizes Northeastern homeowners. If you think the blowout victories in New Jersey and Virginia, along with Senate election in Alabama last year were something to pay attention to, just wait till November 2018 in New York and most other Northeastern and West Coast states.
mhoffman953
@Kangol
Seems odd that people like to now classify anyone right of Bernie Sanders as “Repub-lite”. Far left wing candidates, such as those endorsing socialism and lax immigration policies, are not winning elections in toss-up or traditionally right leaning states.
The Democratic victories have all been moderate Democrats or in areas where Democrats would win anyways. So to say we should “pay attention to…most Northeastern and West Coast states” isn’t an indication of anything since those states already lean left (i.e. California, Washington, New York, Massachusetts, etc). The victory in Alabama wasn’t an indication of much when the other candidate was an alleged child molester and his opponent was a moderate Democrat.
Additionally, the tax bill doesn’t solely favor the rich. It provides tax relief to over 90% of Americans in this country. To say otherwise is distorting facts. It lowers property tax deductions for people who have mansions to $10,000 and lowers the mortgage interest rate deduction cap to $750,000. The highest nationwide property tax is New Jersey at 2.31%. So to be a home owner “penalized” under the tax plan, your home would have to cost over $433,000 to have your deduction limited. I’d hardly say that aspect “unfairly penalizes” homeowners and favors the rich as you allege.

@BobLaBlah
My point exactly. I live in PA in the district that election was in. Conor Lamb is a moderate Democrat. He even ran a TV ad here where he was firing an AR-15 with the voiceover saying “he likes to shoot”.
Far left wing candidates can’t win elections
Kangol
She’s as qualified as the quasi-Republican person calling himself a Democrat that now occupies the office. Also, unlike Andrew Cuomo, she isn’t linked to anyone convicted on corruption charges (here’s looking at you, Joseph Percoco).
Cynthia Nixon is certainly as or more qualified and far more in touch with New York State voters, including upstaters, than anyone the GOP nominates. These days they often field certifiable or total crackpot types (racist nutbag Carl Paladino, Robert Mercer’s puppet Rob Astorino, etc.) to run for statewide office in New York.
