What’s it like to be gay in sports? Well, better than it used to be — that’s for sure.

But “better” doesn’t necessarily mean “good.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Below, hear from more guys on Whisper who are dealing with being gay in the still largely homophobic arena that is team sports:

My highschool football team was full of closet cases.I had sex with some of them and they would still call me a faggot to my face while walking down the hall as if it never happened.

This makes me cry so much. Sweethearts I can’t imagine this difficult life you are living. My heart goes out to you.

When will people learn that you can be extremely MACHO, totally butch, totally masc, and still be gay? In ancient times, the Sacred Band of Thebes was comprised exclusively of gay couples, and they were an invincible army. These guys were as tough as a man can be. Most Athenians and even Spartans were bisexual, and they still represent a standard of masculinity for modern society. It is true that there are MORE fem guys among gays than among straight guys, but human sexuality is so diverse that the stereotypes should be used only for scientific purposes, where you need to detect patterns in a population. In real life, people should be open minded and forget about these stereotypes. That is all I have to say about this subject.

@Billy Budd: Ohhh Billy nothing this queen loves more than a macho man.

I guess it comes to being a professional player. If the other guys notice that “all the bulges distract you” I can imgine them feeling awkward around the gay guy. If you’re a good player and can keep your head to the game I guess the other guys won’t have a problem with it. Action speaks louder than words so convince them by being a good player.

@Billy Budd: I am a little young effeminate queen. How are you honey?

dear gay athletes, time to take a lesson in courage from the non-athletes in your school who Come Out.

@Billy Budd: You betta cruise on Queerty, Billy Budd! LOL
It’d be cool if in addition to this Whisper-centered post Queerty featured real interviews with closeted gay athletes, especially some professional-level athletes.
Like: surely there HAVE TO BE some gay or bi men in Major League Baseball. A few years ago there was a hubbub because it appeared as though a pro was about to come out and then…nada.
It’s one reason that I give Jason Collins, Michael Sam, John Amaechi, Sheryl Swoopes, Brittney Griner, and other gay men, lesbians, bi people and trans who’ve come out so much praise and credit. I hope they will inspire others, especially athletes who are still playing.

Maybe a bit of topic but worth mentioning – West Point class president EJ Coleman is openly gay. Joe Biden delivered the commencement address and commended Coleman for his courage and bravery for living openly.
Kangol
@Bauhaus: Thanks for posting this. It would make a nice article so maybe Queerty will cover it. We’re talking about a young, very smart and brave young black gay man, though, so it’s a roll of dice with this site, unfortunately.

I am a devotee of Blind Gossip and that site has had several ‘blinds’ on closet case NFL players and some hint that a few of them are NFL & NHL ICONS! But, I can understand why they prefer to remain in the ‘closet’ because they have a lot to lose, monetarily, and their status with their fans (remember 95% str8?)I think that day is coming where such exposure, will be a thing of the past and the only ones who will be impacted by this will be their wives and gf (not ‘beards’). I read a piece the other day , claiming under 50% of the millennials are str8!–is this possible? If so, the locker rooms will have more ‘bitch’ fights over roving eyes and hitting on one’s husband! LoL!
