Here we go again! The gay media watchdogs over at GLAAD are bent out of shape because Will Smith’s titular character in Hancock uses the word “homo.” Thrice!!
At approximately 24 minutes into the film, while Jason Batemanâs PR whiz works to rehabilitate the superheroâs tarnished image, he shows Hancock three comic book images in an effort to inspire him. But Hancock rejects the traditional image of costumed superheroes as he responds to each one: âHomo. Homo in red. Norwegian homo.â
The audience is prompted to laugh and there is no response to or retribution for Hancockâs remarks. Batemanâs character, the father of a young son, could have easily spoken up instead of giving Hancock a pass.

Rated PG-13, Hancock is being marketed to families, teens and young adults. This film certainly presents an opportunity for parents to explain to their kids that the usually entertaining character of Hancock is not modeling good behavior. But letâs get real: Hancockâs use of the slur sends a problematic message that itâs okay to discriminate using such hateful words.
But, wait, isn’t the point that Hancock’s being a repulsive prick? Isn’t, as GLAAD admits, the superhero showing kids exactly what not to do? If so, isn’t that praise worthy?

I haven’t seen any of his movies since MIB II and I don’t plan on seeing anything he’s ever going to be in. ESPECIALLY after I read how they royally screwed up the ending of I Am Legend (in a way that again makes him out to be this great hero, unlike how it’s supposed to end). I AM LEGEND is based on the book “I AM LEGEND.” Both “Omega Man” and “The Last Man on Earth” are older movies based on the same story. And changing the ending isn’t artistic license when you consider that the title comes from the intentionally ironic ending of the whole story. In the end, the main character finds out the vampires he’s been killing aren’t mindless, souless monsters, but intelligent beings in a well organized community. But HE’s been killing them! So to them, HE’s the monster, HE is the villain of their myths and “legends.”
And as far as him having no say in writing things. MIB would have been a VERY different movie if they had cast who they originally wanted: Christian Slater. Being in a movie is a constantly evolving process. Lots of times, actors aren’t happy with something and demand it be changed. And it usually happens, especially with a big name and a big ego like Smith who has the clown prince of rap image to uphold.
And as far as him playing pompous characters…Will Smith IS pompous. He doesn’t play pompous characters. He plays the character not as though it’s a character, but as though it’s himself. Everything he’s done has just been an ego trip. I mean look at his roster:

His upcoming movie, Seven Pounds: portrays an IRS agent who is distraught with guilt from the mistakes of his past. As a solution, he plans to commit suicide, but also decides to help seven struggling individuals.
So another movie portraying him as not just helping people, but saving them before he dies…making him almost a Martyr.
Will Smith does not play supporting Characters. He is always a Star, Always the spotlight. And he’s never played anything but the hero. I said it before, i’ll say it again… Jesus in Hip Hop Godspell, here we come.

As a community, we have to worry when we see ourselves portrayed in a negative light, even in jest.

Just as seeing gay relationships in the mainstream media normalizes our sexuality within the minds of the general population, mainstream examples of flagrant discrimination (such as those in Hancock) further normalize that behavior.

However, for all of the other series and his 45 years of existence, Nick Fury has been a white guy. The most recent person to portay THAT one on film? David Hasselhoff.
