Cuddly pastor Fred Phelps has been more vocal about his hatred for The Gays than any other minority or controversial Christian issue. Take exhibit A, the name of his web site: God Hates Fags. He’s even gone so far as to connect the deaths of our soldiers in Iraq with God’s disaproval of homosexuality. Big leap if you ask anyone with an ounce of gray matter. Columnist Leonard PItts has gathered all of this as evidence and makes a convincing argument that Phelps is secretly a self-hating flaming ‘mo.
Hypocrites and their hate:
How often have we seen public moralists railing against that which they themselves secretly indulge? Think Jimmy Swaggart with his prostitute. Think Dr. Laura’s pose in the nude. And for goodness’ sake, how many times have we seen homosexuality condemned by those who turned out to be closeted themselves? There was Pat Robertson biographer-turned-gay-activist Mel White; Spokane Mayor James West, who spent his days opposing gay rights and his nights in gay chat rooms; and Gary Cooper and Michael Bussee, who founded a group that purported to cure people of homosexuality but gave it up when they fell in love with each other.
While we can’t confirm Phelps reads any gay blogs, we do know his daughter does. The snarky folks over at Good As You received their first piece of fan mail from Shirley Phelps. And like any true fan would, she compliments their sense of humor in one paragraph and without missing a beat reiterates the fact they’re going to hell in the next.
