Good news for trans men and women working at Goldman Sachs: “Fortune.com reported Friday that Goldman added coverage of sex-reassignment surgery to its medical plan last year. The article was part of a sidebar on “unusual perks”… Goldman employees can undergo the procedure, which normally costs anywhere from $5,000 to $150,000, and have it paid for entirely by their medical insurance.” [NY Times]

Given the socially extravagant clientel & people who run the good ship, I don’t imagine that for the few people who want sex reassignment surgery will be cost prohibitive. We will know that the angels have flown when Walmart even gives addequate pay.
The really interesting news where insurance goes is that Bushes Medicare Part D is falling flat on it’s greed-ridden private face by disallowing seniors any off-label drug uses thgese are %40 of the uses that people have.
y understanding is that this is a new suprise for all of our seniors: people on Social
Security. God knows what will happen with a privately run Healrh plan.
Good for Goldman sachs and the wealthy people who can afford to be liberal.

Coverage for SRS (sex reassignment surgery) is covered by lots of organizations. One of the first was the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). AFSC is the action arm of the Quakers. AFSC even has some material to help trans employees broach the topic with their employers. My partner (who is FTM) and I went to a trans conference in Philadelphia back in 2005 and were amazed by AFSC. The University of Michigan also offers trans benefits. Many employers are afraid to offer trans benefits for fear of being inundated by potential new trans employees seeking SRS. AFSC says that studies show that it is not true. In the first five years of benefits being offered by AFSC only two people utilized the benefit.
