We agree with President Bush, but not with his grammar: “And you know, these accusations that Bill Clinton is a racist I think is just wrong. I just don’t agree with it.” Bush also took some time this weekend to reassure Republicans that leading presidential contender John McCain is, in fact, a true conservative. [NY Times]

Of course, it’s only the right-wing blogs that have been calling Clinton racist, so this almost sounds like a way to make the accusations mainstream. Someone help me here: there’s a word for this kind of underhanded political attack, where you appear to be defending a person but are really helping to spread poison.

It’s called the Karl Rove swiftboat attack.

I was hoping for something Greek. Like ‘prolipsis’, but that’s not quite it.

Good Golly… name calling! I found out a long time ago, that those who deal in name calling never want solutions to problems… and gays are guilty, too! Back in San Francisco during the 70’s, I was the target of a gay newspaper because I did not support Harvey Milk. I am old enough to recall President Eisenhower saying…that taking a political stance in the middle of the road will open you up to the extreme of both sides of an issue. I supported and worked for Terry Hallinan(straight) over Harvey, because I felt he could best serve all the residents and businesses in our district based on his record as a Civil Rights lawyer and activist. That gay paper said Terry’s slogan “UNITED WE STAND” was overtly anti-gay. After Harvey was assassinated… I still supported Terry over Harvey’s replacement, Harry Britt. I wrote a letter to their editor with my reasons for doing so… They printed my letter, and deleted 2 main paragraphs and gave it a headline…GAY’S FOR HOMOPHOBIA! That paper also endorsed Harry Britt, using a banner headline…UNITED WE STAND! I learned then and now that there are both Homophobics and Hetero-phobics in this world. I will continue to fight name-calling in politics, the media or where-ever it happens… including “OUR” community.
