No, the web’s biggest search service isn’t malfunctioning. That rainbow you see across Google.com when you search for gay terms? It’s on purpose. Gay-related searches on the site are having that staid blue line swapped out for some pride action. Is it here to stay, or just to celebrate pride in June? More notable: While searches for “gay,” “lesbian,” “bisexual” and even “drag queen” bring up the rainbow bar, a certain blogger’s favorite insult does not.

Nice touch.

This is all well and good, but with the track record google has, there is no way in hell I will ever use it. I’m not fond of the fact that they track everyone’s searches and share that information with certain governments (see China and most likely they have a back door arrangement with the US as well).

@galefan2004:
haha, you said back door.

Does the bar turn black when you search for the President?
Marc
Doesn’t seem to work with Google.ca
homofied
when you search “emo” is there a rail-thin denim colored stripe across the top?
galefan2004
@Jake the libertarian: You like the word back door? How about the phrase, “I wanna get fucked in the back door?” What, to much?

I call bullshit. When I searched for “gay rights”, nothing changed. No rainbow.
allstarecho
Ahh, ok, if I search for just “gay”, it works. But “gay rights” doesn’t. Interesting.
erkki
It’s just a specific list of terms mostly related to pride that activate the rainbow bar for the rest of this month. Same as last year (although I think it was slightly different in appearance.)
Emily
it works for “transgender” too 🙂

Odd, though, that it only turns color for those terms when used by themselves. How useful is a search on just “gay” anyway?
