Gus Kenworthy, Dog-Rescuing Winter Olympics Medalist, Reveals He’s Gay

CR7kDsKVEAAe_PJGus Kenworthy, an Olympic freeskiing champion who garnered worldwide attention when he helped find homes for five stray dogs while competing in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, reveals in a new ESPN magazine profile that he’s gay.

“I never got to be proud of what I did in Sochi because I felt so horrible about what I didn’t do,” Gus told the magazine. “I didn’t want to come out as the silver medalist from Sochi. I wanted to come out as the best freeskier in the world.”

“In skiing, there’s such an alpha male thing about pulling the hottest chicks,” he said. “I know hooking up with hot girls doesn’t sound like the worst thing in the world. But I literally would sleep with a girl and then cry about it afterward. I’m like, ‘What am I doing? I don’t know what I’m doing.’”

“I don’t want to make skiing less cool,” Gus added. I hear the snowboarders call us ‘skier fags.’ And it’s frustrating because I’m literally going to live up to that stereotype.”

Olympic champion, loves puppies, super cute, and happens to be gay.

    I’m assuming he’s taken?

    Love that ESPN cover btw.

  • Luis Collazo

    He’s fine good role model!

Good…now go clean up your room. It’s no big deal like it was 10, 20 years ago son..it’s more fashionable to come out now me thinketh.

  • whatsaywhat

that’s some srrrrsssss gayface. Better late than never!

  • Bob Pattinson

Congratulations! It is vital that sportsmen come out loud and proud to dispel the lie that gays are ‘unmanly’.

  • redcarpet30

Qween you gonna be fine. That face is going to open more door and get you more dick than you’ll know what to do with.

  • Peggy Orton

I myself am proud of him.

  • Bryguyf69

Being straight, I don’t have much of a GayDar™ but I remember thinking that he was probably gay during the Sochi Olympics. The gay issue was newsworthy because Sochi is in homophobic Russia, and I wouldn’t have blamed him for not coming out. It would have been too much of a distraction – not to mention, dangerous. That said, being a Silver medalist would have made him the winningest gay Olympian that year. And that would have been a nice in-your-face moment against the Russians, much like Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Berlin.

    Cute guy. Cute puppies.

“I hear the snowboarders call us ‘skier fags.’ And it’s frustrating because I’m literally going to live up to that stereotype.”

Well, there’s always going to be someone doing that; and screw them because they’re the lesser sportsman for it (not to mention there’s a gay guy who won a medal and they didn’t–so, who’s not good enough now, Mr. Snowboarder?). Good to see he had the Olympic spirit to come out.

  • Josh447

I don’t see gay face on this guy at all, especially in his ski pic. There’s hot gay face and not hot gay face. If he has gay face at all, it’s definitely in the hot category. He’s just hot all over.

Congrats on coming out Gus, and letting your bravery shine!

Our “gaydar” knew he was gay when we saw him in Sochi and the media talked about his photographer (which I believed to be his “partner”) stayed behind to care for the dogs and bring them to the USA.

@Cagnazzo82: broke up with his bf. poor dogs died

Thank you, Gus Kenworthy, for saving these beautiful dogs. ^5^! buddy!

@Glücklich: I remember seeing that video and it pisses me off so much. I think I even left a comment saying the guy tormenting the cat should be investigated and possibly arrested for animal cruelty.

Anyways, I love cats myself and have a Siamese cat (hence why that video pisses me off). I would rescue cats, but I don’t really have the resources or time to do that. Maybe if I made more money I would contribute to local no-kill shelters.

At any rate, Siamese cats don’t act like the one in the video normally. They are very affectionate loving cats (even more so than other cat breeds). That kitty was abused and it saddens me. :(

  • Glücklich

    @Giancarlo85:

You have risen in my esteem. I ADORE SIAMESE CATS!!! AWWW!

  • Stache99

@Glücklich: Am I missing something. Is this video from Gus Kenworthy or just a PSA about animal cruelty?

Btw. I’m the same way when someone tries videoing me.

  • Stache99

@Glücklich: My parents have a siamese. That cat hates everyone and will respond just like this one except for my Dad who he’s very affectionate with.

  • Kevin J Desmond

Good for him … he’s cute too :)

  • Stache99

The pic of him holding the dogs is beyond adorable. Swoon…

    @Cagnazzo82: RIIIGHT?!?… :)

    _______________

First of all, congratulations on coming out.

Secondly, get over the issues, if snowboarders don’t like it, how about they go f**k themselves. Don’t be frustrated, if they are THAT concerned over who you are doing in bed, then they are probably even gayer than you.

  • drivendervish

Gus, Your not living up to the stereotype your proving it wrong. Your one of the best skiers in the world and you prefer to sleep with guys, that’s all. The number of people who will think less of you now are far outweighed by those impressed with your struggles and courage. Those snowboarders and anybody else who think your less of a man because of who you sleep with are only showing their ignorance.

  • Glücklich

    @Stache99:
Oh I dunno about the origin of the video. I know a lot of people have visceral reactions to cats and Siamese are especially persnickety. I saw it years ago and have a good memory so thought it’d be a humorous choice, like “here sweety kitty – REEOWWR!”

But I do love Siamese. They’re the only cats my parents have ever had. Cats know I like them so they gravitate to me when I come across them. I’d like to have one of my own but I travel too much.

    • Stache99

@Glücklich: I love both cats and dogs. Each one brings something different to the table personality wise and they can be very affectionate and loving. Even Frankie my parents siamese. Ok not to me but his chosen human ie my dad.

  • DonW

@GorgeousNotGeorge: Where did you get the information that the “poor dogs died”? The last I read, one of the five had died.

  • SteveDenver

OUCH! That is one stack of handsome layered with smartness and charm.

  • Brian

Look, Gus might not have been enthusiastic about sleeping with a woman but it’s not the end of the world. Perhaps he feared the idea that a woman would reject a man who is also interested sexually in men. Women tend to do this.

If it’s a fraction of your total sexuality, male homosexual desire is perceived as a threat by women.

In any case, it appears that this competitive desire to “pull the hottest chicks” amongst the male skiing fraternity is quite telling. It shows that, when men interact sexually with women, he’s the buyer, she’s the seller. She has a gate-keeping role.

Millions of years might go by but this basic difference will always determine the relationship between the sexes. Sometimes it’s good to thank goodness that you don’t need to interact sexually with women.

  • Garth

He is enough to make me want to take up finger painting !

  • bicurious

This is fantastic. There isn’t anything better for the cause than having such an incredibly good looking and successful young man come out as a gay. That is in an olympic athlete who cares about dogs is only icing on the cake.

  • schwma

What a nice story. (Especially for the dogs) :-)

  • stranded

Oh sweety. This poor dude, needs branch out of his skiing culture. He seems to accept the fag term.

  • alphacentauri

    Who? well congrats to him.

  • Panda777

Gus isn’t just Silver he’s pure GOLD. Welcome to the family.

  • Joe

Welcome indeed. If we could only have some NFL players come out, though I doubt that will never happen as long as they are still playing. Coming out in the NFL won’t happen until players careers are long gone and over.

  • GayEGO

Welcome to our world hot guy!

  • Bauhaus

Such a silly rivalry between snowboarders and skiers. I learned to ski as a kid, so it’s what I know and continue to do now. Can’t snowboard to save my life. Gus is gonna have all the closet-case boarders sniffing around him, non-stop.
