Gus Kenworthy, an Olympic freeskiing champion who garnered worldwide attention when he helped find homes for five stray dogs while competing in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, reveals in a new ESPN magazine profile that he’s gay.
“I never got to be proud of what I did in Sochi because I felt so horrible about what I didn’t do,” Gus told the magazine. “I didn’t want to come out as the silver medalist from Sochi. I wanted to come out as the best freeskier in the world.”
“In skiing, there’s such an alpha male thing about pulling the hottest chicks,” he said. “I know hooking up with hot girls doesn’t sound like the worst thing in the world. But I literally would sleep with a girl and then cry about it afterward. I’m like, ‘What am I doing? I don’t know what I’m doing.’”
“I don’t want to make skiing less cool,” Gus added. I hear the snowboarders call us ‘skier fags.’ And it’s frustrating because I’m literally going to live up to that stereotype.”

Being straight, I don’t have much of a GayDar™ but I remember thinking that he was probably gay during the Sochi Olympics. The gay issue was newsworthy because Sochi is in homophobic Russia, and I wouldn’t have blamed him for not coming out. It would have been too much of a distraction – not to mention, dangerous. That said, being a Silver medalist would have made him the winningest gay Olympian that year. And that would have been a nice in-your-face moment against the Russians, much like Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Berlin.

Our “gaydar” knew he was gay when we saw him in Sochi and the media talked about his photographer (which I believed to be his “partner”) stayed behind to care for the dogs and bring them to the USA.

@Glücklich: I remember seeing that video and it pisses me off so much. I think I even left a comment saying the guy tormenting the cat should be investigated and possibly arrested for animal cruelty.
Anyways, I love cats myself and have a Siamese cat (hence why that video pisses me off). I would rescue cats, but I don’t really have the resources or time to do that. Maybe if I made more money I would contribute to local no-kill shelters.
At any rate, Siamese cats don’t act like the one in the video normally. They are very affectionate loving cats (even more so than other cat breeds). That kitty was abused and it saddens me. 🙁

Secondly, get over the issues, if snowboarders don’t like it, how about they go f**k themselves. Don’t be frustrated, if they are THAT concerned over who you are doing in bed, then they are probably even gayer than you.

Gus, Your not living up to the stereotype your proving it wrong. Your one of the best skiers in the world and you prefer to sleep with guys, that’s all. The number of people who will think less of you now are far outweighed by those impressed with your struggles and courage. Oh I dunno about the origin of the video. I know a lot of people have visceral reactions to cats and Siamese are especially persnickety. I saw it years ago and have a good memory so thought it’d be a humorous choice, like “here sweety kitty – REEOWWR!”
But I do love Siamese. They’re the only cats my parents have ever had. Cats know I like them so they gravitate to me when I come across them. I’d like to have one of my own but I travel too much.

Look, Gus might not have been enthusiastic about sleeping with a woman but it’s not the end of the world. Perhaps he feared the idea that a woman would reject a man who is also interested sexually in men. Women tend to do this.
If it’s a fraction of your total sexuality, male homosexual desire is perceived as a threat by women.
In any case, it appears that this competitive desire to “pull the hottest chicks” amongst the male skiing fraternity is quite telling. It shows that, when men interact sexually with women, he’s the buyer, she’s the seller. She has a gate-keeping role.
Millions of years might go by but this basic difference will always determine the relationship between the sexes. Sometimes it’s good to thank goodness that you don’t need to interact sexually with women.
