John McCain’s got another John Hagee headache on his hands.
Hagee, whose endorsement McCain fought for, has previously made comments against gays and called Catholicism “the great whore.” The latest dust-up comes with relation to a late 1990s sermon in which Hagee claimed Hitler was doing God’s work. The remarks, of course, will have Jewish voters – and others – up in arms.
Theodore Hertzel is the father of Zionism. He was a Jew who at the turn of the 19th century said, this land is our land, God wants us to live there. So he went to the Jews of Europe and said ‘I want you to come and join me in the land of Israel.’ So few went that Hertzel went into depression. Those who came founded Israel; those who did not went through the hell of the holocaust.
“Then god sent a hunter. A hunter is someone with a gun and he forces you. Hitler was a hunter. And the Bible says — Jeremiah writing — ‘They shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill and from the holes of the rocks,’ meaning there’s no place to hide. And that might be offensive to some people but don’t let your heart be offended. I didn’t write it, Jeremiah wrote it. It was the truth and it is the truth.
Way to pass that buck, John!

First off let me say that everything about this man and his ideas are reprehensible but…
I don’t understand how the incoherent rantings of this xtian nut job bear any relationship to the title of this blog post. It looks like he’s talking about two different things and they were put together to imply something that isn’t there.
Since the bible is about Jewish myths of a god, how would what Jeremiah wrote apply to the Jews being hunted by Hitler.
Please explain.
PS – I’m not saying that Hitler didn’t do what he did and I’m not saying it wasn’t despicable.

Well, at least it’s looking like Hagee is an equal-opportunity hater and bigot — makes him easier to dismiss outright. Now if only McCain would do that ……
Bill Perdue
Why the big fuss. Hagee’s just another zionist.

This man scares me.
eric
Um, no. He’s not saying Hitler did God’s work. All he’s saying is that Hitler’s acts were a fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecies. He’s not endorsing Hitler, or saying that what Hitler did was good. He’s only that it had been foretold.
hell's kitchen guy
Yes, you misinterpreted his comments. He’s adamantly (as our resident Intifadaist, Bill Perdue, points out), an ardent zionist and pro-Semite. I don’t think any Jews will be up in arms about this.
Darth Paul
Guess again, No. 6. You’re clearly another clueless soul that assumes ALL Jews are zionists. Ever heard of the Satmars? Naturei Karta?
REAL Jews know zionist christians are spiritual detrius whose ultimate goal is to precipitate “armageddon” via the destruction of the Jewish nation (by force or conversion). We know what’s up.
CitizenGeek
I’m all in favour of ridiculing John Hagee and nice trying an’ all, but he really isn’t saying anything like what this blog is implying he did.
hells kitchen guy
#7: You could fit all the Satmars and Naturei karta who oppose the secular state of Israel in Madison Square Garden and have lots of room left over.
Nice, though, that you’re speaking for “REAL Jews.”
todd
No one cared what he said about the catholics – but god forbid if he speaks ill of the J word.

Wow….the monolithic, one dimensional, religious right wing voting base of the Republican Party are not going to like that. Their Taliban-like Ann Coulters, Jerry Falwells and John Hagees are the back bone of their voter base and these are the kind of people who will vote for any unqualified (like Bush) pathetic waste of skin. To get their vote, you have to claim to be pro-life (whatever that is even supposed to mean), claim to be Christian (and live opposite to Christ’s teachings…Ann Coulter), claim to be conservative (and spend like there is no tomorrow), and mix religion with politics. If you are not in favor of turning the pages of American history back to the dark ages of the Salem Witch Craft Trials then it really is hard to get Republican votes. I guess McCain just commited political suicide by rejecting Hagee. Well…all is not lost. There are plenty more spineless, chicken hawk, fear and hate mongering reptiles in the the ranks of the Republican Party who are ready & willing to take his place.

I’m British, so haven’t heard of this odious man, but in that photo he looks like Philip Seymour Hoffman playing Truman Capote.
Which got me thinking – don’t all your fruitloop far right preacher men all turn out to be gay in the end?
Bill Perdue
RichardS, no not all. Some of them rape women and girls and all of them rip off their flocks of sheeple with out mercy or letup.
Unfortunately, it appears that the religious right is taking hold in England that the Tories are busily aping the Republicans and the Democrats who oppose same sex marriage. Or at least that the case with Obama and what’s her face, you know, the has been, the loser.
All that religious fanaticism and bigotry, our legacy from the colonial period’s English law and the pig bigotry of the c or e and is now re-crossing the Atlantic to haunt GLBT folk in England.
