Buju Banton, the unrepentant anti-gay reggae artist free on $250k bail while awaiting February’s retrial after a jury deadlocked on his drug charges, is a master at avoiding ridicule. When his American concerts were shut down after pressure from gay activists, he just rescheduled. And given his mounting legal bills, Buju is using his limited free time to score some cash. Like at a planned Jan. 16 concert in Miami.
Quick, gays, dust off those pitchforks! Buju wants to bust out the batty boys!
Real name Mark Myrie, Buju is enjoying a nod from the Recording Academy, which bestowed his record Before The Dawn with a Best Reggae Album Grammy nomination. (Interestingly, also booked for the concert is Stephen Marley, who beat Buju for the Best Reggae Album award at last year’s Grammys.) And now he’s enjoying a special grant from a judge, who gave Buju the all-clear to perform while he awaits his new trial. The only question is whether Buju will be accompanied by
groupies the $20k/month security detail that’s supposed to keep him from fleeing the country.
