Hil. Calls For Queer Committee

Talk about timing! Hours before the official anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has announced the formation of a lavender-tinged steering committee: LGBT Americans for Hillary.

The 63-strong group includes NYC Council speaker Christine Quinn, Los Angeles Police Commissioner Shelley Freeman, Garden State Equality’s Steven Goldstein and Jose Zuniga – a Chicago area AIDS activist. Clinton’s press release prominently features Zuniga’s name, a placement The Advocate takes as a dig at Barack Obama, who hails from the Windy City.

Of the committee, Clinton says:

I am proud to have the support of such distinguished leaders in the LGBT community. Together, we can move our nation closer to the promise of fairness and equality that all Americans deserve.

In addition to fundraising those pink dollars, the queers will advise Clinton on policy, address communication concerns and generally rally around the politico.

Christine Quinn gushes:

I’ve seen how Hillary Clinton’s experience, commitment, and leadership have made a difference for the LGBT community. From her efforts to defeat the Federal Marriage Amendment to standing up for our rights in employment practices, there is no one else in this race who will fight harder for the LGBT community. She’s ready to be our next president and I look forward to organizing the LGBT community on her behalf.

The aforementioned Zuniga, meanwhile, lauds the Senator’s commitment to fighting Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and HIV/AIDS:

Her commitment to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and her steadfast work to improve access to care and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS are just two of the reasons why I support Hillary Clinton for President.

Clinton’s sure making a show for the queers. She appeared at LA’s LGBT center this weekend. She also raked in $200,000 in campaign dough. Coincidence or shrewd politics? What do you think?
