Hillary Clinton wants Donald Trump to officially come out against the alleged “gay purge” in Chechnya.
During a fundraising dinner for New York’s The Centre, she said, “Gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.”

It’s a phrase she’s used several times following Trump’s election, and one she first used while standing in the UN’s Palais des Nations in Geneva in 2011 as Secretary of State.

“I know that the election hit a lot of us hard,” she said while receiving The Centre’s Trailblazer Award.

She said it’s especially important right now since “we’re seeing clouds gathering on the horizon” for the LGBTQ community.
Speaking of Chechnya’s “gay purge,” which has allegedly seen over 100 men detained and at least three men killed, she said:
“We’ve heard terrifying accounts from Chechnya of gay and bisexual men being taken from their homes and families, tortured, even killed.
“The United States government – yes, this government – should demand an end to the persecution of innocent people.”
Then she suggested that “the progress that we fought for…that we celebrated and maybe even (took) for granted may not be as secure as we once expected.”
Clinton claimed that “when this administration rescinded protections for transgender students, my heart broke.”
“I thought of all our efforts to try to achieve an AIDS-free generation, and we were on the way.
We can, if we stay on that path, finally realize that dream – but not if we are forced off….
I think we have to face the fact that we may not ever be able to count on this administration to lead on LGBT issues.
Let’s remember, 2018, the midterm elections…we can never stop fighting.”

Later, Clinton jokingly said she had a difficult time deciding whether she should attend the fundraiser or go see Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly!
“I really struggled to figure out which event would best reflect my commitment to the community.”
She said she reached a compromise, going to the dinner but obeying a song title from the musical: “Put On Your Sunday Clothes.”
Then she invoked a mantra that she said was “the kind of thing that does pop into your head when you’re out in the woods.”
“When a good friend or loved one says: ‘Quit yelling at the television set,’ just remember: we need to resist, insist, persist and enlist.”

Well maybe that is good enough for the ‘classical liberal’ Kaiser, but it is not good enough for the rest of us – and it is certainly not anywhere near enough for those who have already been arrested, tortured or murdered. Quite often you hear the trump apologists on here complain that we have lost the ‘gay ‘ focus to trump bashing. Well here is something that combines the two. I would be willing to bet trump would be apoplectic and foaming at the mouth by now if those gay and bisexual men were right wing christians. It is his duty to speak out on these issues – regardless of whether or not Americans are involved. As Hilary said very well – we are talking about human rights and human lives. I also agree with her on the issue of never giving up the fight against the current ‘administration’ – they should be challenged every minute of every hour of every day on every issue – especially issues which affect human and civil rights.

Elijah Cummings was on Morning Joe. I liked how he prefers to look at himself and to improvements needed, rather than blaming others for 2016. The congressman’s optimistic about the unwavering energy building up in the Democratic party. He stressed reaching across the aisle to get things done. I felt that when he was saying this, he was speaking to now, but also to future Dems. It seemed from a power perspective, as in after 2018, when the Republicans fall. “We have to be open to the ‘Big Tent’ concept. It is very, very important. And we have to have a strong message, and we need to repeat that message over and over. It needs to be short and succinct.” He went on to talk about how the GOP stays on message.

I am always amused by trolls who harp on about DOMA, chastising the Clintons. Let’s take a little walk down the path of history. Back when I did my government service [not to mention all my cousins], on the induction paperwork there was a section on medical history which asked about “homosexual” tendencies. If you checked yes, then you might receive the washout and the code would indicate it was for a medical reason – mental instability. I no longer remember the specific language nor the specific number code. It was not unusual [at least during the Vietnam War era] that you were asked to provide proof that you engaged in homosexual acts, typically a letter from a boyfriend or by essentially writing out a confession which specifically stated events including dates, locations, names and a description of the acts engaged. {essentially a porn story].
If you made it into the service, you could be discharged for engaging in a homosexual act or even for being suspected of being a homosexual. You received a dishonorable discharge or a less than honorable discharge for reasons of being a sexual psychopath.
In either case when you went to apply for a job you were asked for your draft status by all employers. If you had served, they asked to see your DD-214 or other proof of completion of service. Otherwise you had a draft card with a status code on it. Either set of papers would show that you were not in the military because you were gay and you were not going to get a job.
When Clinton came in he tried to change the policy and the military chiefs and politicians all went berserk. Both Republicans and Democrats. The move in Congress was to pass a law enshrining the old policy which had not been the policy previously. It had been a military regulation. Clinton fought that but did not have the support for a compete rescinding of the old policy. Nunn is the one who proposed DADT and led the push in Congress to get politicians on both sides of the aisle on with it. DADT allowed gay people to serve but essentially made it illegal for them to engage in sexual activity while in the military. It was absurd but it was better than the previous policy. The government could not ask and you could not tell. Clinton fought hard to get a complete lifting of the ban but then it came down to it, there were two options, he could go with DADT or have the existing policy turned into law which would be even harder to overturn in the future. He signed DADT.
As I was told years ago in Hebrew School by Rabbi Konheim, “text without context is pretext”. Much later i discovered this is a manner of describing a common logical fallacy commonly used in religious and political debate in which an objective bit of data is subjectively recast in a manner different form its original context. That is exactly what you have done here.
The same is true with the statement about the Clintons “Marriage is between a woman and a man” . Did one or both of them say that or something similar in the past three decades? Yes. Have many others? Yes. Did the Clintons and others change their opinion? Yes. Is the Republican Party still trying to overturn Obergerfell? Yes. Are the Democrats? No, they support civil rights for gay folks.
Your screaming about the Clinton Foundation accepting donations is absurd. The fact they take money from scum and use it to good things in the world is the best revenge on scum. The fact that money from homophobes goes into programs decided to educate people about HIV and fund methods of preventing the spread of HIV and the treatment of those who have HIV/AIDS is a great thing.
