A week ago, we told you the harrowing story of Daniel and Larry Lennox-Choate, a married couple who were assaulted by a homophobic thug while shopping in a SoHo bodega. Their tale received nationwide attention, not least because the culprit wound up “covered in his own blood with his tail between his legs” after hitting Daniel in the face and being summarily pounced upon by Larry. “I handled the situation and tossed him in the street like the coward loser he is,” Larry wrote on Facebook at the time.

You see, the Lennox-Choates both graduated from West Point Military Academy. (They were the first gay couple to ever be married there, in 2013.) Daniel also served in Iraq and Afghanistan. In short, this is a couple you probably don’t want to fuck with.

This morning, the New York Daily News announced that cops have found and arrested that suspect: a 57-year-old man from Queens named Thomas Clabough, who’s been charged with assault and attempted assault as a hate crime, and is currently awaiting arraignment. We’ll keep you posted on developments as they happen.

The dictionary defines “harrowing” as “extremely disturbing or distressing; grievous”. With all the anti-gay crimes that we have heard about, I don’t think this incident rises to that definition. It actually had a positive ending in that the victims successfully defended themselves and the attacker was caught and jailed.

Standing up for oneself is not a new phenomenon. Back in the early 60s I knew a black drag queen who had once been a Marine sgt. One night coming out of a bar, four yokels started yelling vile epithets at him (I was right behind him and his group). Apparently these redneck crackers had no idea of whom they were dealing with. After a snappy retort, he went right up to the group of harassers, punched the biggest one in the face, then used his karate skills to kick two in the balls and one in the stomach. When it was all done he stood over them and said, “that’s no way to treat Diana Ross’ understudy.” And with all the elegance he could muster walked away to applause from those of us gathered on the sidewalk.

Perhaps, it’s my own unconscious bias but when I was reading this story, I was expecting a 20-30 something attacker. Now that I’ve seen the attacker a different profile comes to mind.

Can we PLEASE dispense with the predictable jokes about prison rape every time someone we don’t like gets sent to jail? It’s not a laughing matter, but a scourge.
Most victims of prison rape are young, nonviolent offenders, especially gays. Many get HIV, not to mention psychological trauma, from their ordeal, and are ignored or punished if they dare to report it. No one deserves that, even a pathetic gay basher.
Punishment should be doled out by the justice system, not by thugs.

Years and years spent cleaning up New York’s homeless problem’ve been flushed down the toilet – frequently confused with the city’s sidewalks – in recent months. I’m surprised more incidents like this one haven’t been reported. It’s like “Night of the Living Dead” in some parts of town now.
