A recently-launched dating app is drawing fire for its stringent rules on joining.
Hanky — an app that hails itself as “a better way to meet men” — puts up new users to a vote, and any three current users can help decide whether that person should be allowed to join.
Cofounder Jonas Cronfeld confirms that 8 out of 10 applicants are rejected — and the hope is to get “more sexy” users.
“For a long time,” he says, “we’ve been fed up with the vibe of the other gay apps. We will probably never have 5 million members like some of these other apps because so many get turned away. But we’ll choose quality over quantity any day.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“Sure, big numbers are nice,” Cronfeld says, “but none of our competitors have got the actual experience right – something we will never compromise on. Our user are nicer and more sexy.”
The practice was put in place to keep out “creeps, timewasters and fake profiles.”
You can also register for Hanky if a current member invites you. However, that requires verification by phone.
According to their press release, “Hanky has been developed in response to growing concerns about the trolling of ordinary users of dating apps. Legitimate users of traditional apps are being subjected to internet ridicule by trolls (often using fake identities), who send abusive messages or who post screenshots of private conversations on Twitter.”

Great! Another way for gays to discriminate against the ugly and fat? Sign me up.
Christian Lum
Gay bitchiness and bullying at its finest! Disgusting

Sounds like some kind of pretty version of online gay eugenics. Only the worthy shall proceed and mingle. The SJWs will pounce on it, it will be forgotten in due time, and we’ll all move on to something else to be mad over… it’s exhausting.

Douches of the gay world unite. I am sure it will be a world of Masc/white/straight acting only. We still have such a long way to go, but for as long as we are still stuck on models, twinks and unrealistic body types as our beauty standards we’ll never grow up.
moldisdelicious
Another Internet app where people can live through and try to create a world for themselves instead of facing a reality we call LIFE. It’s one thing when you’re using it to meet people offline, it’s another when you really living on that shit and using it to escape reality.

Yeah, as if the other gay dating apps haven’t already f$*ked with our self-worth, self-esteem, and self-confidence enough!?!
miamunty
another way to discriminate in the community. I bet it’s mostly white males

That means the hooking-up, I mean, the dating pool will be rather stagnant
Thad
And I’m sure older men would never be accepted.
I am in favor of “nicer and more sexy,” but I fear honesty wouldn’t be appreciated.
Aromaeus
It’s going to be nothing but white and white passing under 30 fit males on this app. That’s probably the end goal for it but doing it this way keeps them from being accused of racism I guess.

I’m feelin’ super bitchy. Here’s an unflattering photo of Mr. Cronfeld. Discuss…

@Thad: “nicer and more sexy,”
Kind of an oxymoron thing to say considering the duchebag vibe I’m getting off of it.

the suggestion that something is exclusive has been used by businesses to market stuff for a long time. The old Studio 54 policy of “only letting the right ones in” comes to mind. But, Two Things:
1. How did the initial pool of guys get in? If the existing members select who can join, who selected the initial pool of guys?
2. Exclusive Policies never last very long. It’s like Studio 54, the illusion of exclusiveness is good for press at the start. However, eventually, anyone who can pay will get in, it’s a business.

I downloaded it. Honestly, I think the fuss is overblown. The guys on it were pretty average looking and ran the gamut of types, ages and races. Playing with the app for a bit, it seems like a pretty similar crowd that I’d see on Tinder, but the app is a bit more well designed and has a few improvements over Tinder, like being able to upload photos directly as opposed to getting them from Facebook.
NateOcean
My experience has been that when they go to the trouble to mention “VGL” that usually they are anything but.
Conversely, I’ve often been pleasantly surprised by several guys that had only marginal photos, but in real life had “model” good looks.
I can’t help but wonder about this ap.
redcarpet30
OK so its a no fats, femmes, bears, blacks, or asians app? Good to know.

@McShane: You win the internet for today!

Wow….there is nothing special about this app. Disappointed.

If the creators are so confident, would the creators of this app do one with short video clips so you can hear what the person sounds like? How many would fail that “test”. There is often such a disconnect between what people look like and what they sound like. So many guys will get all buffed out so they look like fitness models or barbarians or vikings, but then they sound like they are breathing helium when they talk. Same with guys taking steroids.
Also, personality isn’t registered with apps – the workouts cause problems like bloated-ego, hemroids-from-muscle-strain, weazing-asthma that hits athletes, etc. which makes a lot of buff guys really grumpy sour-pusses. Can they make an app to weed out that? LOL There is no getting around having to get to know someone to truly find compatibility for a night or a lifetime. Some couples that seem unlikely looks-wise are bonded by completely compatible personalities, such as senses of humor, interests, etc.

“Creeps” aka blacks, asians, latinos, middle eastern men, anyone with a bodyfat over 10%, anyone with a dick size under 9″, anyone over 30, etc.
olfwob
“Our user are nicer and more sexy.” maybe more sexy, but i am not sure about nicer.

These apps are for pussy boys who cannot meet a real man face to face…
SonOfKings
Sounds like a pretty toxic environment. Who would offer themselves up to be disrespected like that?
Kangol
A List, the app. Whatever.

@McShane: Let’s find a third person and vote that ugly skank off the island.
aeroflyer
@McShane: that picture explains a lot. Log cabin republican ready to fleece the young and gullible out of there $$$$?
seaguy
More fake photos, this app will not survive long (hopefully).
seaguy
@McShane: Thanks for sharing. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and none of the words for his are good.

This app will do what gays have been doing to each other for decades. Instead, it will give you the convenience being a narcissistic bitch from your smart phone. What’s the problem?

@JDMotion: And you think it is okay to be fat because?

Nothing new to see here.. Bars and clubs have been doing it for yrs.. Claiming “membership” to keep certain people out. I will treat this the same way I treat the bars and clubs.. Fcuk them and their membership..

What a “community” of absolute garbage we gay men are. This is how everything in the gay world functions anyway.
It’s funny how we blame gay suicide on straight people, because it’s this attitude that will force my hand someday.
