Glenn Beck says “we’ve got to get back to our churches, our synagogues, our mosques” and become a better America, because “the country is burning down.” Also: Stop arguing about silly things like marriage equality (or abortion for that matter), which is a religious right.
Gay marriage is not a threat to the country, Beck tells Bill O’Reilly, so long as the U.S. doesn’t go down the Canadian path where churches are impacted. More entertaining than watching Beck actually criticize attacks on gay marriage? Seeing him feud with (or kowtow to) O’Reilly over which one of them is on the right side of the culture wars.

Glenn Beck is not a rational person; never has been, never will be. The content of this article is misleading.
Glenn Beck, Bill O’ Reilly are two sides of the same coin.
Just three months ago-and I watched it myself-Glenn Beck said on his less popular show that marriage “is a human institution best left alone. What you do in your home is you business, not mine or my children’s”.
There are also video clips of him making similar statements on YouTube.
This is an act. Glenn Beck himself has stated that what he does is entertainment, and he doesn’t care about politics. He’s a fraud, a flake. With the recent court ruling, Glenn Beck and several other conservatives are giving up, and instead trying to sound as though their in the ‘middle of the road’. Their slowly losing, “so screw it”, their sentiment goes, “I might as well sound reasonable, gain more of an audience make Obama look foolish”.
No matter what he or any other limp wristed, censorship happy conservative says, their still the reason we’ve got idiots sporting teabags and Nazi memorabilia.
‘Go back to our churches, synagogues and mosques”?
Where in the hell do you think this issue of “traditional marriage” even came from?

This is slowly turning into an argument with my father. As it goes on, he’ll twist his own words so that by the end he sounds like he’s on your side (to avoid admitting he was wrong), so what are you arguing for? Making you sound like the asshole.
Mr. Enemabag Jones
Don’t be fooled by Republican silence on this. They are trying to appear moderate to attrack conservative Democrats, and libertarians. Reagan did that in ’79, and again in ’84, and we all know how his presidency went. If the Republicans manage to convince voters they are a centrist party, and gain any slight advance in the mid-terms, or the presidency, they will go back to their anti-gay ways.
Beck is the RNC’s mouthpiece. What he says on his shows, is a test run of how the Republicans will run their campaign.
As far as his comment about Canada, no churches have been impacted. Only JP’s, who are government employees, and cannot decided which federal laws they will, or will not uphold

Typing the next phrase is literaly making my fingers hurt…….Glen Beck may be one of the best things to ever happen to the cause for Gay marriage!……….If you ever want to see what it is like to visit an alternate universe take a listen to his radio show some time. He is revered as a hybrid messiah/prophet by his fanatical lunatic listeners. This is a man who was a Howard Stern wanna-be shock jock with a FM radio show that tanking. He “saw the light” and suddenly changed his whole show and adopted his rightwing zealot schtick….
Recently I was listening in awe as a guy was describing listening to Beck talk about “connecting with the departed” (???) and began “thinking about his words” The very next night he had a dream where his late Father appeared and they “settled unresolved issues” that they were not able to resolve prior to the fathers passing. He was telling Beck and implying that Beck was responsible for the “vision” of his father!! Beck replied in a whisper like voice “all you must do is listen and believe”…………Incredible crazy shit stuff!…This guy has a gazillion listeners and regularly sells out venues for live appearances……..
As to my opening paragraph, if Beck actually begins turning the heat down on the flames of anti Gay marriage I believe there is a good chance his his minions will do the same…………..Glenn Beck possibly assisting the Gay marriage cause? we are truly entering the bizzaro world………
Dave
No, he isn’t. He’s still insisting that marriage is a religious issue in which government should play no part, despite the fact that civil marriage and social marriage have peacefully coexisted for longer than this country has been around.
He’s still wrong, and still anti-equality. He just realizes that discrimination is easier when the churches are in charge.

I don’t like Glenn Beck, but the truth is he draws huge audiences. I’ll take his support, however qualified it may be, on gay marriage.
I will also welcome the gay community to look objectively at the issue and hold the same standard for both sides of the aisle. I always laugh at the Carrie Prejean controversy…she said that marriage was between a man and a woman and the gay community had a collective freakout. You know who else had/has that position? President Obama…who repeated that phrase ad nauseum as he campaigned. But he’s a Democrat and apparently the gay community is less comfortable with/excited by attacking a beacon of the left. And so it goes…partisanship over principle.
Robert in NYC
Saying that same-sex marriage will impact churches is nothing more than a red herring. In the ten countries allowing us to marry, they all have gender neutral laws for same-sex civil marriage which precludes any religious cult from being forced to officiate or recognize them. The way it should be. Its up to the individual cults to decide if they choose to acknowledge same-sex marriages or to perform them. Beck is an idiot and losing popularity as are all of the right wing pundits, including Fox.

Queerty posters crack me up. Beck essentially “supports” gay marriage but “he’s lying, he doesn’t mean it, it’s a trick”.
Obama is against gay marriage but he “secretly supports it, doesn’t mean it, is forced to say that”.
If you ever even watched Beck and followed his “issues” you’d understand that he WOULD logically feel that the subject of gay marriage is a flea on a dog compared to what is actually going on in the USA with the most radical and dangerous POTUS in US history currently in power.
adam
lol, marriage equality hasn’t affected churches in Canada.
Noticed how he talked about restoring history? That’s the worst part about Beck – he invites on a man named David Barton who has absolutely no education in history, but has managed to obtain a bunch of early documents of the U.S., has speeches all the time, but only paraphrases letters and such in an extremely misleading way to make people think we were founded as a Christian theocracy.
It’s extremely self-defeating to find him “rational” because he didn’t speak vehemently against us…. because he’s still against us.
Peter
Is Mormon Glenn Beck softening to help Mitt Romney (Mormon) look more acceptable, as part of a Mormon front? The Mormons are starting a new ad campaign to look more “mainstrean” also, after the public relations fiasco when it was exposed that the Mormons paid $32 Million to run all the lies in their ad campaign for Prop 8.
Hannah
Who is that sitting next to Bill O’Reilly? I don’t recognize him. He looks like Glenn Beck, but sounds nothing like him.
Republican
Good for Glenn Beck. I still think some of his views are a bit strange, but I loved how he mocked Bill O’Reilly’s ridiculous question about gay marriage being a threat to America.
Besides that, there’s something I’ve noticed regarding the coverage of this on the blogosphore that I think is important to point out. A lot of the transcripts that are out there of this interview have Beck saying that marriage is a religious right. (I think the Fox transcript may even say this.) Given the context, I think he actually said that it was a religious RITE. The difference is very important. He seems to be supporting the libertarian position of getting the government out of the marriage business and letting churches and others deal with such things, since it’s not, in his mind, something the government has any legitimate interest being involved in. I think that position doesn’t have a chance of becoming reality for quite a few years, but it is, at the very least, a position that treats people equally under the law, and it’s much better than the anti-gay rhetoric we sometimes hear from these folks.
MaybeTruth
I don’t know about Beck, but I’ve always found O’Reilly to be reasonably gay-supportive. It’s his constant defense of Pres. Obama that annoys me, though.
Syl
Beck, when he’s not sobbing, makes a good point on occasion, and, if he indeed wrote his books, is a competent enough author, although I disagree with him as often as I agree. I think Plays Well With Others may be right: if this gets Mormons and other hardcore conservatives to soften on gay marriage, then more power to the fat allegedly-no-longer-an-alcoholic bastard! The whole anti-Obama wave has a very strong libertarian “leave me the fuck alone, government out of everything” streak to it, and the polling is trending in favor of gay marriage every year.
D Smith
does anyone else get the feeling that this mormon douchenozzle is only sounding to support gay rights (actually he only says he wants government out of marriage) because the mormon church is telling him to? kind of to tone down their visible case of the crazies… much like their new PR adds that they happen to be running in swing states and places where marriage equality are coming up for a vote currently…
just my 2c
Robert in NYC
Republican, No. 31, there is no way the government will ever be out of the marriage business simply because of the rights and privileges numbering approximately 1300 at the state and federal level that are available only through marriage. If you were to remove government from marriage, none of us would be entitled to any of those rights. How would we get them? Beck’s statement that marriage is a religious rite is true if a couple wants a religious ceremony, but civil marriage has absolutely NOTHING to do with religion. The two are different. I’ve attended many and not one word mentioned a deity, only the powers invested by the state in the officiant to perform the ceremony. States issue marriage licenses, religious cults do not, big difference. In France for example, the civil marriage is the only binding one recognized by the state, the religious component is optional and not binding, nor would a religious marriage without the civil component be valid. Its a pity we don’t have that as a model for marriage procedures. Religious cults have no right to interfere in civil matters affecting the rights of a minority that according to the constitution must be protected and guaranteed. Nobody is forcing any religious cult to reocgnize or perform same-sex marriages either, nothing more than a red herring to uphold discrimination. None of the ten countries that allow same-sex marriage compel any religious cult to marry us, their laws are gender neutral when it comes to civil marriage. The sooner people like Beck and other right wing religious psychopaths learn that, the better off we’ll all be.
Cam
The weird thing is, this whole “Churches in Canada being forced to….” comment.
Churches in Canada have NOT been forced to marry gay people. There WAS a pastor in Canada that the govt. went after because he was advocating violence etc.. against gays. That is not covered under religeous freedom laws.
swarm
#35 Cam Instead of “advocating violence etc” are you too tired to actually get the facts? After two complaints filed with Canada’s Alberta Human Rights Commission, they took legal action in 2005 against Roman Catholic Bishop Henry for the following statements stating religious opposition to gay marriage.
QUOTE:
1. The Roman Catholic Church considers “…marriage to be a sacrament, a sacred covenant in which husband and wife express their mutual love, and join with God in the creation of a new human person, destined for eternal life….. A same-sex union is not a physical union that transmits human life, producing children. A same-sex union is not the joining of two complementary natures that complete each other.”
“…homosexuality, adultery, prostitution and pornography undermine the foundations of the family, the basis of society.”
While linking “homosexuality” in that sentence may be offensive, it’s hardly any advocacy of VIOLENCE.
One complaint was dismissed by the filer, the second one seems to have had no disposition that I can find.
Posting on the internet is like playing telephone. People just make up crap they “think” they heard…likely on MSNOBAMA. While this guy may be a jerk (and the subject of other “scandals” that’s no reason to lie about facts. But then again, lying and misinformation is the new way of life in this decade.

Swarm, No. 36. The catholic cult does not recognize civil marriages because it is not sacramental, so its argument against gays being allowed a civil marriage is nonsense. Further, if its stand is that sacramental marriage is primarily for one man and one woman based solely on the procreation nonsense, then it must condemn and invalidate sacramental marriages where the couple does not want to or cannot procreate. Where is it written in civil marriage law that procreation is a prerequiste to marry? Marriage has a long history, older than any organized cult has ever existed and it has changed drastically throughout millenia. Up until recently, women were still considered chattel, subserviant to their husbands and the cults condoned that too. The roman cult in particular has NO moral authority to make any judgement about others, especially gay people and their rights given its history of torture, execution, oppression, misogyny, and sexual abuse of women and children for almost two millenia. People think its a recent phenomenon, it isn’t, its as old as the cult itself and continues to this day. An evil institution with its long tradition of coverups and lies.
Bill Perdue
@Robert in NYC: You nailed it Robert.
One reason the cults oppose the extension of civil marriage rights to GLBT folks is that it’ll be a further repudiation of their anti-female, anti-LGBT superstitious madness.
They make a lot of (untaxed) money off marriages and the more they’re portrayed as relics of the days when we lived in caves, ate gurbs and worshiped sky pixies and thunder gods the more they’ll lose money.

Bill, No. 40, right on, as always! Another thing, the roman cult makes hundreds of thousands if not millions off of annulments too. At one time if a marriage had been consummated, the cult would never annul a marriage, now it does for almost anything because its a very lucrative business. The roman cult is no better than any of the corporate looters. Evil and corrupt throughout. Its extinction can’t come quick enough.

@37 Robert in NYC – I wasn’t supporting the guy. I was making a point that stretching the “truth” on the internet is unnecessary and counter-productive. The argument (as you accurately made it) can stand alone, there is no reason for @cam to change/omit/color the “facts” to add unnecessary bullshit. Granted, if one wants to make a point that categorizing gay people with porn and prostitution will “incite” violence, that’s valid, imo.
But to say [someone] “ADVOCATED VIOLENCE ETC” when there is no foundation for that statement is lazy and careless minimally or a lie – if the statement was intentional. Seeing “etc” in any statement of fact is bullshit anyway and lazy imo. State the facts if you’re (cam, not you) pretending to enlighten us. LOL eyeroll. This jackass has been accused of actually protecting cult child molesters so the fact that @cam managed to miss that point just shows the lack of actual research into what he/she was asserting.
